On the diversity and complexity of absorption line profiles produced by outflows in Active Galactic Nuclei
Understanding the origin of AGN absorption line profiles and their diversity
could help to explain the physical structure of the accretion flow, and also to
assess the impact of accretion on the evolution of the AGN host galaxies. Here
we present our first attempt to systematically address the issue of the origin
of the complexities observed in absorption profiles. Using a simple method, we
compute absorption line profiles against a continuum point source for several
simulations of accretion disk winds. We investigate the geometrical,
ionization, and dynamical effects on the absorption line shapes. We find that
significant complexity and diversity of the absorption line profile shapes can
be produced by the non-monotonic distribution of the wind velocity, density,
and ionization state. Non-monotonic distributions of such quantities are
present even in steady-state, smooth disk winds, and naturally lead to the
formation of multiple and detached absorption troughs. These results
demonstrate that the part of a wind where an absorption line is formed is not
representative of the entire wind. Thus, the information contained in the
absorption line is incomplete if not even insufficient to well estimate gross
properties of the wind such as the total mass and energy fluxes. In addition,
the highly dynamical nature of certain portions of disk winds can have
important effects on the estimates of the wind properties. For example, the
mass outflow rates can be off up to two orders of magnitude with respect to
estimates based on a spherically symmetric, homogeneous, constant velocity

A Survey of Air-to-Ground Propagation Channel Modeling for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of unmanned
aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly for small UAVs, due to their affordable
prices, ease of availability, and ease of operability. Existing and future
applications of UAVs include remote surveillance and monitoring, relief
operations, package delivery, and communication backhaul infrastructure.
Additionally, UAVs are envisioned as an important component of 5G wireless
technology and beyond. The unique application scenarios for UAVs necessitate
accurate air-to-ground (AG) propagation channel models for designing and
evaluating UAV communication links for control/non-payload as well as payload
data transmissions. These AG propagation models have not been investigated in
detail when compared to terrestrial propagation models. In this paper, a
comprehensive survey is provided on available AG channel measurement campaigns,
large and small scale fading channel models, their limitations, and future
research directions for UAV communication scenarios
A Holistic Investigation on Terahertz Propagation and Channel Modeling Toward Vertical Heterogeneous Networks
User-centric and low latency communications can be enabled not only by small
cells but also through ubiquitous connectivity. Recently, the vertical
heterogeneous network (V-HetNet) architecture is proposed to backhaul/fronthaul
a large number of small cells. Like an orchestra, the V-HetNet is a polyphony
of different communication ensembles, including geostationary orbit (GEO), and
low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites (e.g., CubeSats), and networked flying
platforms (NFPs) along with terrestrial communication links. In this study, we
propose the Terahertz (THz) communications to enable the elements of V-HetNets
to function in harmony. As THz links offer a large bandwidth, leading to
ultra-high data rates, it is suitable for backhauling and fronthauling small
cells. Furthermore, THz communications can support numerous applications from
inter-satellite links to in-vivo nanonetworks. However, to savor this harmony,
we need accurate channel models. In this paper, the insights obtained through
our measurement campaigns are highlighted, to reveal the true potential of THz

Measurement Based Channel Characterization and Modeling for Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications
Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication is a challenging but fast growing technology that has potential to enhance traffic safety and efficiency. It can also provide environmental benefits in terms of reduced fuel consumption. The effectiveness and reliability of these applications highly depends on the quality of the V2V communication link, which rely upon the properties of the propagation channel. Therefore, understanding the properties of the propagation channel becomes extremely important. This thesis aims to fill some gaps of knowledge in V2V channel research by addressing four different topics. The first topic is channel characterization of some important safety critical scenarios (papers I and II). Second, is the accuracy or validation study of existing channel models for these safety critical scenarios (papers III and IV). Third, is about channel modeling (paper V) and, the fourth topic is the impact of antenna placement on vehicles and the possible diversity gains. This thesis consists of an introduction and six papers: Paper I presents a double directional analysis of vehicular channels based on channel measurement data. Using SAGE, a high-resolution algorithm for parameter estimation, we estimate channel parameters to identify underlying propagation mechanisms. It is found that, single-bounce reflections from static objects are dominating propagation mechanisms in the absence of line-of-sight (LOS). Directional spread is observed to be high, which encourages the use of diversity-based methods. Paper II presents results for V2V channel characterization based on channel measurements conducted for merging lanes on highway, and four-way street intersection scenarios. It is found that the merging lane scenario has the worst propagation condition due to lack of scatterers. Signal reception is possible only with the present LOS component given that the antenna has a good gain in the direction of LOS. Thus designing an antenna that has an omni-directional gain, or using multiple antennas that radiate towards different directions become more important for such safety critical scenarios. Paper III presents the results of an accuracy study of a deterministic ray tracing channel model for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, that is compared against channel measurement data. It is found that the results from measurement and simulation show a good agreement especially in LOS situations where as in NLOS situations the simulations are accurate as far as existing physical phenomena of wave propagation are captured by the implemented algorithm. Paper IV presents the results of a validation study of a stochastic NLOS pathloss and fading model named VirtualSource11p for V2V communication in urban street intersections. The reference model is validated with the help of independent channel measurement data. It is found that the model is flexible and fits well to most of the measurements with a few exceptions, and we propose minor modifications to the model for increased accuracy. Paper V presents a shadow fading model targeting system simulations based on channel measurements. The model parameters are extracted from measurement data, which is separated into three categories; line-of-sight (LOS), LOS obstructed by vehicles (OLOS), and LOS blocked by buildings (NLOS), with the help of video information recorded during the measurements. It is found that vehicles obstructing the LOS induce an additional attenuation in the received signal power. The results from system level vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) simulations are also presented, showing that the LOS obstruction affects the packet reception probability and this can not be ignored. Paper VI investigates the impact of antenna placement based on channel measurements performed with four omni-directional antennas mounted on the roof, bumper, windscreen and left-side mirror of the transmitter and receiver cars. We use diversity combining methods to evaluate the performance differences for all possible single-input single-output (SIMO), multiple-input single-output (MISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) link combinations. This investigation suggests that a pair of antennas with complementary properties, e.g., a roof mounted antenna together with a bumper antenna is a good solution for obtaining the best reception performance, in most of the propagation environments. In summary, this thesis describes the channel behavior for safety-critical scenarios by statistical means and models it so that the system performance can be assessed in a realistic manner. In addition to that the influence of different antenna arrangements has also been studied to exploit the spatial diversity and to mitigate the shadowing effects. The presented work can thus enable more efficient design of future V2V communication systems
Multipath propagation characterization for terrestrial mobile and fixed microwave communications
Multipath propagation is a key issue studied throughout this thesis, and it causes dispersions in delay, frequency and spatial domains. These are dominant phenomena in both terrestrial mobile and fixed wideband communications. In this thesis, multipath propagation mechanisms including diffraction, refraction, reflection and scattering are studied when radio waves interact with dielectric and metallic objects, or an atmospheric duct. Measurements were also performed for empirical modelling and validation of the theoretical work carried out in this thesis.
By using physical optics (PO) method, the attenuation by double knife edges with ground reflections is solved for the first time under a general formula of the attenuation by multiple knife edges with ground reflections derived in this thesis, and some important and interesting conclusions are obtained. The attenuations by curvilinear-topped obstacles and by multiple flat-topped obstacles are also presented in closed forms. The results are the simplest and easiest ones available now, and they can be applied for field strength predictions both in mobile and fixed microwave communications.
Based on three-ray (direct, reflected and super-refracted) and two-ray (direct and super-refracted) multipath models for plane and spherical earth, respectively, frequency selective fading (FSF) and depolarization due to clear air are studied by simulations and experiments for terrestrial line-of-sight (LOS) microwave links and dual-polarized communication systems. Novel simulation methods have been introduced and applied based on the fact that the amplitudes and excess delays of the rays are functions of the (modified) refractive index gradients which are random variables with exponential and normal distributions inside and outside the duct in lower atmosphere, respectively.
Some important empirical or semi-empirical models and parameters are presented at 5Â GHz based on large amount of measured data in indoor and outdoor environments. The results include path loss models, excess delay and rms delay spread, spatial and frequency correlations, window (sector) length of averaging fast fading components, path number distribution, and tapped-delay-line (TDL) channel models. These empirical or semi-empirical parameters and models are the latest results achieved at 5Â GHz, and they are of great importance in designing of future wireless local area networks (WLAN), especially the TDL models are developed for the first time in this frequency band.
Using a general autocorrelation function derived in this thesis for three-dimensional (3-D) scattering environments, a novel theoretical modelling method is developed to study the propagation mechanisms of different types of Doppler spectra observed in measurements. The 3-D autocorrelation function is connected to the probability density functions (PDF) of the angles of arrival (AoAs) of the scattered waves and the antenna radiation patterns in the azimuth and elevation planes. This is a new work which tries to define and explain the physical reasons of 3-D Doppler spectra from propagation point of view.
A new computer simulation method for wideband 3-D received signal level in an urban environment is developed under the general assumptions of the distributions for path number, amplitude, excess delay etc. This simulation method can provide detailed fading characteristics for wideband mobile communications in a specific urban environment.reviewe
Channel Sounding for the Masses: Low Complexity GNU 802.11b Channel Impulse Response Estimation
New techniques in cross-layer wireless networks are building demand for
ubiquitous channel sounding, that is, the capability to measure channel impulse
response (CIR) with any standard wireless network and node. Towards that goal,
we present a software-defined IEEE 802.11b receiver and CIR estimation system
with little additional computational complexity compared to 802.11b reception
alone. The system implementation, using the universal software radio peripheral
(USRP) and GNU Radio, is described and compared to previous work. By overcoming
computational limitations and performing direct-sequence spread-spectrum
(DS-SS) matched filtering on the USRP, we enable high-quality yet inexpensive
CIR estimation. We validate the channel sounder and present a drive test
campaign which measures hundreds of channels between WiFi access points and an
in-vehicle receiver in urban and suburban areas
Discovery of black hole spindown in the BATSE catalogue of long GRBs
The BATSE catalogue is searched for evidence of spindown of black holes or
proto-neutron stars (PNS) by extracting normalized light curves (nLC). The nLC
are obtained by matched filtering, to suppress intermediate time scales such as
due to the shock break-out of GRB jets through a remnant stellar envelope. We
find consistency within a few percent of the nLC and the model template for
spindown of an initially extremal black hole against high-density matter at the
ISCO. The large BATSE size enables a study of the nLC as a function of
durations . The resulting is within a
confidence interval for durations s, which compares favorably with
the alternative of spindown against matter further out and spindown of a PNS,
whose fits are, respectively, outside the 4 and 12
confidence intervals. We attribute spindown against matter at the ISCO to
cooling by gravitational-wave emission from non-axisymmetric instabilities in
the inner disk or torus as the result of a Hopf bifurcation in response to
energetic input from the central black hole. This identification gives an
attractive outlook for chirps in quasi-periodic gravitational waves lasting
