Bootstrap Multigrid for the Laplace-Beltrami Eigenvalue Problem
This paper introduces bootstrap two-grid and multigrid finite element
approximations to the Laplace-Beltrami (surface Laplacian) eigen-problem on a
closed surface. The proposed multigrid method is suitable for recovering
eigenvalues having large multiplicity, computing interior eigenvalues, and
approximating the shifted indefinite eigen-problem. Convergence analysis is
carried out for a simplified two-grid algorithm and numerical experiments are
presented to illustrate the basic components and ideas behind the overall
bootstrap multigrid approach
A Self-learning Algebraic Multigrid Method for Extremal Singular Triplets and Eigenpairs
A self-learning algebraic multigrid method for dominant and minimal singular
triplets and eigenpairs is described. The method consists of two multilevel
phases. In the first, multiplicative phase (setup phase), tentative singular
triplets are calculated along with a multigrid hierarchy of interpolation
operators that approximately fit the tentative singular vectors in a collective
and self-learning manner, using multiplicative update formulas. In the second,
additive phase (solve phase), the tentative singular triplets are improved up
to the desired accuracy by using an additive correction scheme with fixed
interpolation operators, combined with a Ritz update. A suitable generalization
of the singular value decomposition is formulated that applies to the coarse
levels of the multilevel cycles. The proposed algorithm combines and extends
two existing multigrid approaches for symmetric positive definite eigenvalue
problems to the case of dominant and minimal singular triplets. Numerical tests
on model problems from different areas show that the algorithm converges to
high accuracy in a modest number of iterations, and is flexible enough to deal
with a variety of problems due to its self-learning properties.Comment: 29 page
A Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method for the Brinkman Equation
In this paper we consider the numerical upscaling of the Brinkman equation in
the presence of high-contrast permeability fields. We develop and analyze a
robust and efficient Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM) for
the Brinkman model. In the fine grid, we use mixed finite element method with
the velocity and pressure being continuous piecewise quadratic and piecewise
constant finite element spaces, respectively. Using the GMsFEM framework we
construct suitable coarse-scale spaces for the velocity and pressure that yield
a robust mixed GMsFEM. We develop a novel approach to construct a coarse
approximation for the velocity snapshot space and a robust small offline space
for the velocity space. The stability of the mixed GMsFEM and a priori error
estimates are derived. A variety of two-dimensional numerical examples are
presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.Comment: 22 page
Three real-space discretization techniques in electronic structure calculations
A characteristic feature of the state-of-the-art of real-space methods in
electronic structure calculations is the diversity of the techniques used in
the discretization of the relevant partial differential equations. In this
context, the main approaches include finite-difference methods, various types
of finite-elements and wavelets. This paper reports on the results of several
code development projects that approach problems related to the electronic
structure using these three different discretization methods. We review the
ideas behind these methods, give examples of their applications, and discuss
their similarities and differences.Comment: 39 pages, 10 figures, accepted to a special issue of "physica status

JCMmode: An Adaptive Finite Element Solver for the Computation of Leaky Modes
We present our simulation tool JCMmode for calculating propagating modes of
an optical waveguide. As ansatz functions we use higher order, vectorial
elements (Nedelec elements, edge elements). Further we construct transparent
boundary conditions to deal with leaky modes even for problems with
inhomogeneous exterior domains as for integrated hollow core Arrow waveguides.
We have implemented an error estimator which steers the adaptive mesh
refinement. This allows the precise computation of singularities near the
metal's corner of a Plasmon-Polariton waveguide even for irregular shaped metal
films on a standard personal computer.Comment: 11 page
Adaptive multiscale model reduction with Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Methods
In this paper, we discuss a general multiscale model reduction framework
based on multiscale finite element methods. We give a brief overview of related
multiscale methods. Due to page limitations, the overview focuses on a few
related methods and is not intended to be comprehensive. We present a general
adaptive multiscale model reduction framework, the Generalized Multiscale
Finite Element Method. Besides the method's basic outline, we discuss some
important ingredients needed for the method's success. We also discuss several
applications. The proposed method allows performing local model reduction in
the presence of high contrast and no scale separation
