    A Theistic Critique of Secular Moral Nonnaturalism

    This dissertation is an exercise in Theistic moral apologetics. It will be developing both a critique of secular nonnaturalist moral theory (moral Platonism) at the level of metaethics, as well as a positive form of the moral argument for the existence of God that follows from this critique. The critique will focus on the work of five prominent metaethical theorists of secular moral non-naturalism: David Enoch, Eric Wielenberg, Russ Shafer-Landau, Michael Huemer, and Christopher Kulp. Each of these thinkers will be critically examined. Following this critique, the positive moral argument for the existence of God will be developed, combining a cumulative, abductive argument that follows from filling in the content of a succinct apagogic argument. The cumulative abductive argument and the apagogic argument together, with a transcendental and modal component, will be presented to make the case that Theism is the best explanation for the kind of moral, rational beings we are and the kind of universe in which we live, a rational intelligible universe

    Fuzzy Natural Logic in IFSA-EUSFLAT 2021

    The present book contains five papers accepted and published in the Special Issue, “Fuzzy Natural Logic in IFSA-EUSFLAT 2021”, of the journal Mathematics (MDPI). These papers are extended versions of the contributions presented in the conference “The 19th World Congress of the International Fuzzy Systems Association and the 12th Conference of the European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology jointly with the AGOP, IJCRS, and FQAS conferences”, which took place in Bratislava (Slovakia) from September 19 to September 24, 2021. Fuzzy Natural Logic (FNL) is a system of mathematical fuzzy logic theories that enables us to model natural language terms and rules while accounting for their inherent vagueness and allows us to reason and argue using the tools developed in them. FNL includes, among others, the theory of evaluative linguistic expressions (e.g., small, very large, etc.), the theory of fuzzy and intermediate quantifiers (e.g., most, few, many, etc.), and the theory of fuzzy/linguistic IF–THEN rules and logical inference. The papers in this Special Issue use the various aspects and concepts of FNL mentioned above and apply them to a wide range of problems both theoretically and practically oriented. This book will be of interest for researchers working in the areas of fuzzy logic, applied linguistics, generalized quantifiers, and their applications

    A Lightweight Type System with Uniqueness and Typestates for the Java Cryptography API

    Java cryptographic APIs facilitate building secure applications, but not all developers have strong cryptographic knowledge to use these APIs correctly. Several studies have shown that misuses of those cryptographic APIs may cause significant security vulnerabilities, compromising the integrity of applications and exposing sensitive data. Hence, it is an important problem to design methodologies and techniques, which can guide developers in building secure applications with minimum effort, and that are accessible to non-experts in cryptography. In this thesis, we present a methodology that reasons about the correct usage of Java cryptographic APIs with types, specifically targeting to cryptographic applications. Our type system combines aliasing control and the abstraction of object states into typestates, allowing users to express a set of user-defined disciplines on the use of cryptographic APIs and invariants on variable usage. More specifically, we employ the typestate automaton to depict typestates within our type system, and we control aliases by applying the principle of uniqueness to sensitive data. We mainly focus on the usage of initialization vectors. An initialization vector is a binary vector used as the input to initialize the state for the encryption of a plaintext block sequence. Randomization and uniqueness are crucial to an initialization vector. Failing to maintain a unique initialization vector for encryption can compromise confidentiality. Encrypting the same plaintext with the same initialization vector always yields the same ciphertext, thereby simplifying the attacker's task of guessing the cipher pattern. To address this problem practically, we implement our approach as a pluggable type system on top of the EISOP Checker Framework. To minimize the cryptographic expertise required by application developers looking to incorporate secure computing concepts into their software, our approach allows cryptographic experts to plug in the protocols into the system. In this setting, developers merely need to provide minimal annotations on sensitive data—requiring little cryptographic knowledge. We also evaluated our work by performing experiments over one benchmark and 7 real-world Java projects from Github. We found that 6 out 7 projects have security issues. In summary, we found 12 misuses in initialization vectors

    Measuring the impact of COVID-19 on hospital care pathways

    Care pathways in hospitals around the world reported significant disruption during the recent COVID-19 pandemic but measuring the actual impact is more problematic. Process mining can be useful for hospital management to measure the conformance of real-life care to what might be considered normal operations. In this study, we aim to demonstrate that process mining can be used to investigate process changes associated with complex disruptive events. We studied perturbations to accident and emergency (A &E) and maternity pathways in a UK public hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-incidentally the hospital had implemented a Command Centre approach for patient-flow management affording an opportunity to study both the planned improvement and the disruption due to the pandemic. Our study proposes and demonstrates a method for measuring and investigating the impact of such planned and unplanned disruptions affecting hospital care pathways. We found that during the pandemic, both A &E and maternity pathways had measurable reductions in the mean length of stay and a measurable drop in the percentage of pathways conforming to normative models. There were no distinctive patterns of monthly mean values of length of stay nor conformance throughout the phases of the installation of the hospital’s new Command Centre approach. Due to a deficit in the available A &E data, the findings for A &E pathways could not be interpreted
