    Extending the Cascaded Gaussian Mixture Regression Framework for Cross-Speaker Acoustic-Articulatory Mapping

    International audienceThis article addresses the adaptation of an acoustic-articulatory inversion model of a reference speaker to the voice of another source speaker, using a limited amount of audio-only data. In this study, the articulatory-acoustic relationship of the reference speaker is modeled by a Gaussian mixture model and inference of articulatory data from acoustic data is made by the associated Gaussian mixture regression (GMR). To address speaker adaptation, we previously proposed a general framework called Cascaded-GMR (C-GMR) which decomposes the adaptation process into two consecutive steps: spectral conversion between source and reference speaker and acoustic-articulatory inversion of converted spectral trajectories. In particular, we proposed the Integrated C-GMR technique (IC-GMR) in which both steps are tied together in the same probabilistic model. In this article, we extend the C-GMR framework with another model called Joint-GMR (J-GMR). Contrary to the IC-GMR, this model aims at exploiting all potential acoustic-articulatory relationships, including those between the source speaker's acoustics and the reference speaker's articulation. We present the full derivation of the exact Expectation-Maximization (EM) training algorithm for the J-GMR. It exploits the missing data methodology of machine learning to deal with limited adaptation data. We provide an extensive evaluation of the J-GMR on both synthetic acoustic-articulatory data and on the multi-speaker MOCHA EMA database. We compare the J-GMR performance to other models of the C-GMR framework, notably the IC-GMR, and discuss their respective merits

    Articulatory representations to address acoustic variability in speech

    The past decade has seen phenomenal improvement in the performance of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems. In spite of this vast improvement in performance, the state-of-the-art still lags significantly behind human speech recognition. Even though certain systems claim super-human performance, this performance often is sub-par across domains and across datasets. This gap is predominantly due to the lack of robustness against speech variability. Even clean speech is extremely variable due to a large number of factors such as voice characteristics, speaking style, speaking rate, accents, casualness, emotions and more. The goal of this thesis is to investigate the variability of speech from the perspective of speech production, put forth robust articulatory features to address this variability, and to incorporate these features in state-of-the-art ASR systems in the best way possible. ASR systems model speech as a sequence of distinctive phone units like beads on a string. Although phonemes are distinctive units in the cognitive domain, their physical realizations are extremely varied due to coarticulation and lenition which are commonly observed in conversational speech. The traditional approaches deal with this issue by performing di-, tri- or quin-phone based acoustic modeling but are insufficient to model longer contextual dependencies. Articulatory phonology analyzes speech as a constellation of coordinated articulatory gestures performed by the articulators in the vocal tract (lips, tongue tip, tongue body, jaw, glottis and velum). In this framework, acoustic variability is explained by the temporal overlap of gestures and their reduction in space. In order to analyze speech in terms of articulatory gestures, the gestures need to be estimated from the speech signal. The first part of the thesis focuses on a speaker independent acoustic-to-articulatory inversion system that was developed to estimate vocal tract constriction variables (TVs) from speech. The mapping from acoustics to TVs was learned from the multi-speaker X-ray Microbeam (XRMB) articulatory dataset. Constriction regions from TV trajectories were defined as articulatory gestures using articulatory kinematics. The speech inversion system combined with the TV kinematics based gesture annotation provided a system to estimate articulatory gestures from speech. The second part of this thesis deals with the analysis of the articulatory trajectories under different types of variability such as multiple speakers, speaking rate, and accents. It was observed that speaker variation degraded the performance of the speech inversion system. A Vocal Tract Length Normalization (VTLN) based speaker normalization technique was therefore developed to address the speaker variability in the acoustic and articulatory domains. The performance of speech inversion systems was analyzed on an articulatory dataset containing speaking rate variations to assess if the model was able to reliably predict the TVs in challenging coarticulatory scenarios. The performance of the speech inversion system was analyzed in cross accent and cross language scenarios through experiments on a Dutch and British English articulatory dataset. These experiments provide a quantitative measure of the robustness of the speech inversion systems to different speech variability. The final part of this thesis deals with the incorporation of articulatory features in state-of-the-art medium vocabulary ASR systems. A hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture was developed to fuse the acoustic and articulatory feature streams in an ASR system. ASR experiments were performed on the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) corpus. Several articulatory feature combinations were explored to determine the best feature combination. Cross-corpus evaluations were carried out to evaluate the WSJ trained ASR system on the TIMIT and another dataset containing speaking rate variability. Results showed that combining articulatory features with acoustic features through the hybrid CNN improved the performance of the ASR system in matched and mismatched evaluation conditions. The findings based on this dissertation indicate that articulatory representations extracted from acoustics can be used to address acoustic variability in speech observed due to speakers, accents, and speaking rates and further be used to improve the performance of Automatic Speech Recognition systems

    Silent Speech Interfaces for Speech Restoration: A Review

SSIs rely on non-acoustic biosignals generated by the human body during speech production to enable communication whenever normal verbal communication is not possible or not desirable. In this review, we focus on the first case and present latest SSI research aimed at providing new alternative and augmentative communication methods for persons with severe speech disorders. SSIs can employ a variety of biosignals to enable silent communication, such as electrophysiological recordings of neural activity, electromyographic (EMG) recordings of vocal tract movements or the direct tracking of articulator movements using imaging techniques. Depending on the disorder, some sensing techniques may be better suited than others to capture speech-related information. For instance, EMG and imaging techniques are well suited for laryngectomised patients, whose vocal tract remains almost intact but are unable to speak after the removal of the vocal folds, but fail for severely paralysed individuals. From the biosignals, SSIs decode the intended message, using automatic speech recognition or speech synthesis algorithms. Despite considerable advances in recent years, most present-day SSIs have only been validated in laboratory settings for healthy users. Thus, as discussed in this paper, a number of challenges remain to be addressed in future research before SSIs can be promoted to real-world applications.     A Silent-Speech Interface using Electro-Optical Stomatography

Viele potenzielle Nutzer werden jedoch ausgeschlossen: Nämlich alle Sprecher, die nur schwer oder sogar gar nicht Sprache produzieren können. Silent-Speech Interfaces bieten einen Weg, mit Maschinen durch ein bequemes sprachgesteuertes Interface zu kommunizieren ohne dafür akustische Sprache zu benötigen. Sie können außerdem prinzipiell eine Ersatzstimme stellen, indem sie die intendierten Äußerungen, die der Nutzer nur still artikuliert, künstlich synthetisieren. Diese Dissertation stellt ein neues Silent-Speech Interface vor, das auf einem neu entwickelten Messsystem namens Elektro-Optischer Stomatografie und einem neuartigen parametrischen Vokaltraktmodell basiert, das die Echtzeitsynthese von Sprache basierend auf den gemessenen Daten ermöglicht. Mit der Hardware wurden Studien zur Einzelworterkennung durchgeführt, die den Stand der Technik in der intra- und inter-individuellen Genauigkeit erreichten und übertrafen. Darüber hinaus wurde eine Studie abgeschlossen, in der die Hardware zur Steuerung des Vokaltraktmodells in einer direkten Artikulation-zu-Sprache-Synthese verwendet wurde. Während die Verständlichkeit der Synthese von Vokalen sehr hoch eingeschätzt wurde, ist die Verständlichkeit von Konsonanten und kontinuierlicher Sprache sehr schlecht. Many potential users are, however, excluded: Namely, all speakers who cannot easily or even at all produce speech. Silent-Speech Interfaces offer a way to communicate with a machine by a convenient speech recognition interface without the need for acoustic speech. They also can potentially provide a full replacement voice by synthesizing the intended utterances that are only silently articulated by the user. To that end, the speech movements need to be captured and mapped to either text or acoustic speech. This dissertation proposes a new Silent-Speech Interface based on a newly developed measurement technology called Electro-Optical Stomatography and a novel parametric vocal tract model to facilitate real-time speech synthesis based on the measured data. The hardware was used to conduct command word recognition studies reaching state-of-the-art intra- and inter-individual performance. Furthermore, a study on using the hardware to control the vocal tract model in a direct articulation-to-speech synthesis loop was also completed. While the intelligibility of synthesized vowels was high, the intelligibility of consonants and connected speech was quite poor.     Suprasegmental representations for the modeling of fundamental frequency in statistical parametric speech synthesis

    Statistical parametric speech synthesis (SPSS) has seen improvements over recent years, especially in terms of intelligibility. Synthetic speech is often clear and understandable, but it can also be bland and monotonous. Proper generation of natural speech prosody is still a largely unsolved problem. This is relevant especially in the context of expressive audiobook speech synthesis, where speech is expected to be fluid and captivating. In general, prosody can be seen as a layer that is superimposed on the segmental (phone) sequence. Listeners can perceive the same melody or rhythm in different utterances, and the same segmental sequence can be uttered with a different prosodic layer to convey a different message. For this reason, prosody is commonly accepted to be inherently suprasegmental. It is governed by longer units within the utterance (e.g. syllables, words, phrases) and beyond the utterance (e.g. discourse). However, common techniques for the modeling of speech prosody - and speech in general - operate mainly on very short intervals, either at the state or frame level, in both hidden Markov model (HMM) and deep neural network (DNN) based speech synthesis. This thesis presents contributions supporting the claim that stronger representations of suprasegmental variation are essential for the natural generation of fundamental frequency for statistical parametric speech synthesis. We conceptualize the problem by dividing it into three sub-problems: (1) representations of acoustic signals, (2) representations of linguistic contexts, and (3) the mapping of one representation to another. The contributions of this thesis provide novel methods and insights relating to these three sub-problems. In terms of sub-problem 1, we propose a multi-level representation of f0 using the continuous wavelet transform and the discrete cosine transform, as well as a wavelet-based decomposition strategy that is linguistically and perceptually motivated. In terms of sub-problem 2, we investigate additional linguistic features such as text-derived word embeddings and syllable bag-of-phones and we propose a novel method for learning word vector representations based on acoustic counts. Finally, considering sub-problem 3, insights are given regarding hierarchical models such as parallel and cascaded deep neural networks

    Prosody generation for text-to-speech synthesis

    The absence of convincing intonation makes current parametric speech synthesis systems sound dull and lifeless, even when trained on expressive speech data. Typically, these systems use regression techniques to predict the fundamental frequency (F0) frame-by-frame. This approach leads to overlysmooth pitch contours and fails to construct an appropriate prosodic structure across the full utterance. In order to capture and reproduce larger-scale pitch patterns, we propose a template-based approach for automatic F0 generation, where per-syllable pitch-contour templates (from a small, automatically learned set) are predicted by a recurrent neural network (RNN). The use of syllable templates mitigates the over-smoothing problem and is able to reproduce pitch patterns observed in the data. The use of an RNN, paired with connectionist temporal classification (CTC), enables the prediction of structure in the pitch contour spanning the entire utterance. This novel F0 prediction system is used alongside separate LSTMs for predicting phone durations and the other acoustic features, to construct a complete text-to-speech system. Later, we investigate the benefits of including long-range dependencies in duration prediction at frame-level using uni-directional recurrent neural networks. Since prosody is a supra-segmental property, we consider an alternate approach to intonation generation which exploits long-term dependencies of F0 by effective modelling of linguistic features using recurrent neural networks. For this purpose, we propose a hierarchical encoder-decoder and multi-resolution parallel encoder where the encoder takes word and higher level linguistic features at the input and upsamples them to phone-level through a series of hidden layers and is integrated into a Hybrid system which is then submitted to Blizzard challenge workshop. We then highlight some of the issues in current approaches and a plan for future directions of investigation is outlined along with on-going work

    A review of data collection practices using electromagnetic articulography

    This paper reviews data collection practices in electromagnetic articulography (EMA) studies, with a focus on sensor placement. It consists of three parts: in the first part, we introduce electromagnetic articulography as a method. In the second part, we focus on existing data collection practices. Our overview is based on a literature review of 905 publications from a large variety of journals and conferences, identified through a systematic keyword search in Google Scholar. The review shows that experimental designs vary greatly, which in turn may limit researchers' ability to compare results across studies. In the third part of this paper we describe an EMA data collection procedure which includes an articulatory-driven strategy for determining where to position sensors on the tongue without causing discomfort to the participant. We also evaluate three approaches for preparing (NDI Wave) EMA sensors reported in the literature with respect to the duration the sensors remain attached to the tongue: 1) attaching out-of-the-box sensors, 2) attaching sensors coated in latex, and 3) attaching sensors coated in latex with an additional latex flap. Results indicate no clear general effect of sensor preparation type on adhesion duration. A subsequent exploratory analysis reveals that sensors with the additional flap tend to adhere for shorter times than the other two types, but that this pattern is inverted for the most posterior tongue sensor

    IberSPEECH 2020: XI Jornadas en Tecnología del Habla and VII Iberian SLTech

    IberSPEECH2020 is a two-day event, bringing together the best researchers and practitioners in speech and language technologies in Iberian languages to promote interaction and discussion. The organizing committee has planned a wide variety of scientific and social activities, including technical paper presentations, keynote lectures, presentation of projects, laboratories activities, recent PhD thesis, discussion panels, a round table, and awards to the best thesis and papers. The program of IberSPEECH2020 includes a total of 32 contributions that will be presented distributed among 5 oral sessions, a PhD session, and a projects session. To ensure the quality of all the contributions, each submitted paper was reviewed by three members of the scientific review committee. All the papers in the conference will be accessible through the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA) Online Archive. Paper selection was based on the scores and comments provided by the scientific review committee, which includes 73 researchers from different institutions (mainly from Spain and Portugal, but also from France, Germany, Brazil, Iran, Greece, Hungary, Czech Republic, Ucrania, Slovenia). Furthermore, it is confirmed to publish an extension of selected papers as a special issue of the Journal of Applied Sciences, “IberSPEECH 2020: Speech and Language Technologies for Iberian Languages”, published by MDPI with fully open access.
