    Variational Image Segmentation Model Coupled with Image Restoration Achievements

    Image segmentation and image restoration are two important topics in image processing with great achievements. In this paper, we propose a new multiphase segmentation model by combining image restoration and image segmentation models. Utilizing image restoration aspects, the proposed segmentation model can effectively and robustly tackle high noisy images, blurry images, images with missing pixels, and vector-valued images. In particular, one of the most important segmentation models, the piecewise constant Mumford-Shah model, can be extended easily in this way to segment gray and vector-valued images corrupted for example by noise, blur or missing pixels after coupling a new data fidelity term which comes from image restoration topics. It can be solved efficiently using the alternating minimization algorithm, and we prove the convergence of this algorithm with three variables under mild condition. Experiments on many synthetic and real-world images demonstrate that our method gives better segmentation results in comparison to others state-of-the-art segmentation models especially for blurry images and images with missing pixels values.Comment: 23 page

    Survey of Gain-Scheduling Analysis & Design

    The gain-scheduling approach is perhaps one of the most popular nonlinear control design approaches which has been widely and successfully applied in fields ranging from aerospace to process control. Despite the wide application of gain-scheduling controllers and a diverse academic literature relating to gain-scheduling extending back nearly thirty years, there is a notable lack of a formal review of the literature. Moreover, whilst much of the classical gain-scheduling theory originates from the 1960s, there has recently been a considerable increase in interest in gain-scheduling in the literature with many new results obtained. An extended review of the gainscheduling literature therefore seems both timely and appropriate. The scope of this paper includes the main theoretical results and design procedures relating to continuous gain-scheduling (in the sense of decomposition of nonlinear design into linear sub-problems) control with the aim of providing both a critical overview and a useful entry point into the relevant literature

    A review of discrete-time optimization models for tactical production planning

    This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published in International Journal of Production Research on 27 Mar 2014, available online: http://doi.org/10.1080/00207543.2014.899721[EN] This study presents a review of optimization models for tactical production planning. The objective of this research is to identify streams and future research directions in this field based on the different classification criteria proposed. The major findings indicate that: (1) the most popular production-planning area is master production scheduling with a big-bucket time-type period; (2) most of the considered limited resources correspond to productive resources and, to a lesser extent, to inventory capacities; (3) the consideration of backlogs, set-up times, parallel machines, overtime capacities and network-type multisite configuration stand out in terms of extensions; (4) the most widely used modelling approach is linear/integer/mixed integer linear programming solved with exact algorithms, such as branch-and-bound, in commercial MIP solvers; (5) CPLEX, C and its variants and Lindo/Lingo are the most popular development tools among solvers, programming languages and modelling languages, respectively; (6) most works perform numerical experiments with random created instances, while a small number of works were validated by real-world data from industrial firms, of which the most popular are sawmills, wood and furniture, automobile and semiconductors and electronic devices.This study has been funded by the Universitat Politècnica de València projects: ‘Material Requirement Planning Fourth Generation (MRPIV)’ (Ref.     A possibilistic framework for constraint-based metabolic flux analysis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Constraint-based models allow the calculation of the metabolic flux states that can be exhibited by cells, standing out as a powerful analytical tool, but they do not determine which of these are likely to be existing under given circumstances. Typical methods to perform these predictions are (a) flux balance analysis, which is based on the assumption that cell behaviour is optimal, and (b) metabolic flux analysis, which combines the model with experimental measurements.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Herein we discuss a possibilistic framework to perform metabolic flux estimations using a constraint-based model and a set of measurements. The methodology is able to handle inconsistencies, by considering sensors errors and model imprecision, to provide rich and reliable flux estimations. The methodology can be cast as linear programming problems, able to handle thousands of variables with efficiency, so it is suitable to deal with large-scale networks. Moreover, the possibilistic estimation does not attempt necessarily to predict the actual fluxes with precision, but rather to exploit the available data – even if those are scarce – to distinguish possible from impossible flux states in a gradual way.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We introduce a possibilistic framework for the estimation of metabolic fluxes, which is shown to be flexible, reliable, usable in scenarios lacking data and computationally efficient.</p

    Constraint-Based Temporal Planning

    This paper deals with the application of notions from planning and the representation of temporal information in an animation system to simulate human task performance. Specifically, a model was developed in which the representation and manipulation of temporal information forms the basis of a planning system. This model has been implemented as part of an animation system in which the goal was to enable a natural, clear language for the specification of relevant temporal constraints along with a planner that would manipulate these constraints, ultimately resulting in exact timing parameters to be passed to the low-level animation routines. The first part of the paper describes the essential role of temporal planning in an animation system that models human task performance. The second part of the paper goes on to explain how a wide variety of temporal constraints can be compiled into a set of low-level simple constraints through the use of dummy intervals and fuzzy constraints. The third part of the paper describes how a definite plan of events can be generated based on an analogical spring system
