    Proportional-integral-plus (PIP) control of the ALSTOM gasifier problem

    Although it is able to exploit the full power of optimal state variable feedback within a non-minimum state-space (NMSS) setting, the proportional-integral-plus (PIP) controller is simple to implement and provides a logical extension of conventional proportional-integral and proportional-integral-derivative (PI/PID) controllers, with additional dynamic feedback and input compensators introduced automatically by the NMSS formulation of the problem when the process is of greater than first order or has appreciable pure time delays. The present paper applies the PIP methodology to the ALSTOM benchmark challenge, which takes the form of a highly coupled multi-variable linear model, representing the gasifier system of an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant. In particular, a straightforwardly tuned discrete-time PIP control system based on a reduced-order backward-shift model of the gasifier is found to yield good control of the benchmark, meeting most of the specified performance requirements at three different operating points

    Accelerated Backpressure Algorithm

    We develop an Accelerated Back Pressure (ABP) algorithm using Accelerated Dual Descent (ADD), a distributed approximate Newton-like algorithm that only uses local information. Our construction is based on writing the backpressure algorithm as the solution to a network feasibility problem solved via stochastic dual subgradient descent. We apply stochastic ADD in place of the stochastic gradient descent algorithm. We prove that the ABP algorithm guarantees stable queues. Our numerical experiments demonstrate a significant improvement in convergence rate, especially when the packet arrival statistics vary over time.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures.     Detection of fast radio transients with multiple stations: a case study using the Very Long Baseline Array

    Recent investigations reveal an important new class of transient radio phenomena that occur on sub-millisecond timescales. Often transient surveys' data volumes are too large to archive exhaustively. Instead, an on-line automatic system must excise impulsive interference and detect candidate events in real-time. This work presents a case study using data from multiple geographically distributed stations to perform simultaneous interference excision and transient detection. We present several algorithms that incorporate dedispersed data from multiple sites, and report experiments with a commensal real-time transient detection system on the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). We test the system using observations of pulsar B0329+54. The multiple-station algorithms enhanced sensitivity for detection of individual pulses. These strategies could improve detection performance for a future generation of geographically distributed arrays such as the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder and the Square Kilometre Array.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures.     Identifying Finite-Time Coherent Sets from Limited Quantities of Lagrangian Data

    A data-driven procedure for identifying the dominant transport barriers in a time-varying flow from limited quantities of Lagrangian data is presented. Our approach partitions state space into pairs of coherent sets, which are sets of initial conditions chosen to minimize the number of trajectories that "leak" from one set to the other under the influence of a stochastic flow field during a pre-specified interval in time. In practice, this partition is computed by posing an optimization problem, which once solved, yields a pair of functions whose signs determine set membership. From prior experience with synthetic, "data rich" test problems and conceptually related methods based on approximations of the Perron-Frobenius operator, we observe that the functions of interest typically appear to be smooth. As a result, given a fixed amount of data our approach, which can use sets of globally supported basis functions, has the potential to more accurately approximate the desired functions than other functions tailored to use compactly supported indicator functions. This difference enables our approach to produce effective approximations of pairs of coherent sets in problems with relatively limited quantities of Lagrangian data, which is usually the case with real geophysical data. We apply this method to three examples of increasing complexity: the first is the double gyre, the second is the Bickley Jet, and the third is data from numerically simulated drifters in the Sulu Sea.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

    Robust nonlinear control of vectored thrust aircraft

    An interdisciplinary program in robust control for nonlinear systems with applications to a variety of engineering problems is outlined. Major emphasis will be placed on flight control, with both experimental and analytical studies. This program builds on recent new results in control theory for stability, stabilization, robust stability, robust performance, synthesis, and model reduction in a unified framework using Linear Fractional Transformations (LFT's), Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI's), and the structured singular value micron. Most of these new advances have been accomplished by the Caltech controls group independently or in collaboration with researchers in other institutions. These recent results offer a new and remarkably unified framework for all aspects of robust control, but what is particularly important for this program is that they also have important implications for system identification and control of nonlinear systems. This combines well with Caltech's expertise in nonlinear control theory, both in geometric methods and methods for systems with constraints and saturations
