    Improving approximation of domain-focused, corpus-based, lexical semantic relatedness

    Semantic relatedness is a measure that quantifies the strength of a semantic link between two concepts. Often, it can be efficiently approximated with methods that operate on words, which represent these concepts. Approximating semantic relatedness between texts and concepts represented by these texts is an important part of many text and knowledge processing tasks of crucial importance in many domain-specific scenarios. The problem of most state-of-the-art methods for calculating domain-specific semantic relatedness is their dependence on highly specialized, structured knowledge resources, which makes these methods poorly adaptable for many usage scenarios. On the other hand, the domain knowledge in the fields such as Life Sciences has become more and more accessible, but mostly in its unstructured form - as texts in large document collections, which makes its use more challenging for automated processing. In this dissertation, three new corpus-based methods for approximating domain-specific textual semantic relatedness are presented and evaluated with a set of standard benchmarks focused on the field of biomedicine. Nonetheless, the proposed measures are general enough to be adapted to other domain-focused scenarios. The evaluation involves comparisons with other relevant state-of-the-art measures for calculating semantic relatedness and the results suggest that the methods presented here perform comparably or better than other approaches. Additionally, the dissertation also presents an experiment, in which one of the proposed methods is applied within an ontology matching system, DisMatch. The performance of the system was evaluated externally on a biomedically themed ‘Phenotype’ track of the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative 2016 campaign. The results of the track indicate, that the use distributional semantic relatedness for ontology matching is promising, as the system presented in this thesis did stand out in detecting correct mappings that were not detected by any other systems participating in the track. The work presented in the dissertation indicates an improvement achieved w.r.t. the stat-of-the-art through the domain adapted use of the distributional principle (i.e. the presented methods are corpus-based and do not require additional resources).     Finding co-solvers on Twitter, with a little help from Linked Data

    In this paper we propose a method for suggesting potential collaborators for solving innovation challenges online, based on their competence, similarity of interests and social proximity with the user. We rely on Linked Data to derive a measure of semantic relatedness that we use to enrich both user profiles and innovation problems with additional relevant topics, thereby improving the performance of co-solver recommendation. We evaluate this approach against state of the art methods for query enrichment based on the distribution of topics in user profiles, and demonstrate its usefulness in recommending collaborators that are both complementary in competence and compatible with the user. Our experiments are grounded using data from the social networking service Twitter.com

    Thematically Reinforced Explicit Semantic Analysis

    We present an extended, thematically reinforced version of Gabrilovich and Markovitch's Explicit Semantic Analysis (ESA), where we obtain thematic information through the category structure of Wikipedia. For this we first define a notion of categorical tfidf which measures the relevance of terms in categories. Using this measure as a weight we calculate a maximal spanning tree of the Wikipedia corpus considered as a directed graph of pages and categories. This tree provides us with a unique path of "most related categories" between each page and the top of the hierarchy. We reinforce tfidf of words in a page by aggregating it with categorical tfidfs of the nodes of these paths, and define a thematically reinforced ESA semantic relatedness measure which is more robust than standard ESA and less sensitive to noise caused by out-of-context words. We apply our method to the French Wikipedia corpus, evaluate it through a text classification on a 37.5 MB corpus of 20 French newsgroups and obtain a precision increase of 9-10% compared with standard ESA.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, presented at CICLing 201

    Semantic Sort: A Supervised Approach to Personalized Semantic Relatedness

    We propose and study a novel supervised approach to learning statistical semantic relatedness models from subjectively annotated training examples. The proposed semantic model consists of parameterized co-occurrence statistics associated with textual units of a large background knowledge corpus. We present an efficient algorithm for learning such semantic models from a training sample of relatedness preferences. Our method is corpus independent and can essentially rely on any sufficiently large (unstructured) collection of coherent texts. Moreover, the approach facilitates the fitting of semantic models for specific users or groups of users. We present the results of extensive range of experiments from small to large scale, indicating that the proposed method is effective and competitive with the state-of-the-art.Comment: 37 pages, 8 figures A short version of this paper was already published at ECML/PKDD 201

    Semantic Interaction in Web-based Retrieval Systems : Adopting Semantic Web Technologies and Social Networking Paradigms for Interacting with Semi-structured Web Data

    Existing web retrieval models for exploration and interaction with web data do not take into account semantic information, nor do they allow for new forms of interaction by employing meaningful interaction and navigation metaphors in 2D/3D. This thesis researches means for introducing a semantic dimension into the search and exploration process of web content to enable a significantly positive user experience. Therefore, an inherently dynamic view beyond single concepts and models from semantic information processing, information extraction and human-machine interaction is adopted. Essential tasks for semantic interaction such as semantic annotation, semantic mediation and semantic human-computer interaction were identified and elaborated for two general application scenarios in web retrieval: Web-based Question Answering in a knowledge-based dialogue system and semantic exploration of information spaces in 2D/3D

    Similarity of Semantic Relations

    There are at least two kinds of similarity. Relational similarity is correspondence between relations, in contrast with attributional similarity, which is correspondence between attributes. When two words have a high degree of attributional similarity, we call them synonyms. When two pairs of words have a high degree of relational similarity, we say that their relations are analogous. For example, the word pair mason:stone is analogous to the pair carpenter:wood. This paper introduces Latent Relational Analysis (LRA), a method for measuring relational similarity. LRA has potential applications in many areas, including information extraction, word sense disambiguation, and information retrieval. Recently the Vector Space Model (VSM) of information retrieval has been adapted to measuring relational similarity, achieving a score of 47% on a collection of 374 college-level multiple-choice word analogy questions. In the VSM approach, the relation between a pair of words is characterized by a vector of frequencies of predefined patterns in a large corpus. LRA extends the VSM approach in three ways: (1) the patterns are derived automatically from the corpus, (2) the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is used to smooth the frequency data, and (3) automatically generated synonyms are used to explore variations of the word pairs. LRA achieves 56% on the 374 analogy questions, statistically equivalent to the average human score of 57%. On the related problem of classifying semantic relations, LRA achieves similar gains over the VSM

    Semantic Relevance Analysis of Subject-Predicate-Object (SPO) Triples

    The goal of this thesis is to explore and integrate several existing measurements for ranking the relevance of a set of subject-predicate-object (SPO) triples to a given concept. As we are inundated with information from multiple sources on the World-Wide-Web, SPO similarity measures play a progressively important role in information extraction, information retrieval, document clustering and ontology learning. This thesis is applied in the Cyber Security Domain for identifying and understanding the factors and elements of sociopolitical events relevant to cyberattacks. Our efforts are towards developing an algorithm that begins with an analysis of news articles by taking into account the semantic information and word order information in the SPOs extracted from the articles. The semantic cohesiveness of a user provided concept and the extracted SPOs will then be calculated using semantic similarity measures derived from 1) structured lexical databases; and 2) our own corpus statistics. The use of a lexical database will enable our method to model human common sense knowledge, while the incorporation of our own corpus statistics allows our method to be adaptable to the Cyber Security domain. The model can be extended to other domains by simply changing the local corpus. The integration of different measures will help us triangulate the ranking of SPOs from multiple dimensions of semantic cohesiveness. Our results are compared to rankings gathered from surveys of human users, where each respondent ranks a list of SPO based on their common knowledge and understanding of the relevance evaluations to a given concept. The comparison demonstrates that our integrated SPO similarity ranking scheme closely reflects the human common sense knowledge in a specific domain it addresses
