    Keystroke Saving in a Language with Highly Transparent Orthography

    This paper proposes a pseudo-syllabic soft keyboard for the Croatian language. The orthogonal keyboard layout makes it possible to improve typing efficiency in terms of keystroke saving, and is based on a highly ordered arrangement of pseudo-syllabic keys. The positions of the consonant and vowel graphemes that constitute a pseudo-syllable are used to access it orthogonally and independently each other. This allows the user to input a pseudo-syllable with a lower cognitive load than with non-orthogonal 2-D layouts. Moreover, due to the almost perfect transparency of the language, a pseudo-syllable to be input can be accessed fast and with a reduced cognitive load starting from its phonetic sounds. The results of the present study show that the obtainable keystroke savings are comparable with those scored by word prediction tools with one suggestion, i.e., those requiring only a moderate cognitive load by the user

    Timed written picture naming in 14 european languages

    We describe the Multilanguage Written Picture Naming Dataset. This gives trial-level data and time and agreement norms for written naming of the 260 pictures of everyday objects that compose the colorized Snodgrass and Vanderwart picture set (Rossion & Pourtois in Perception, 33, 217\u2013236, 2004). Adult participants gave keyboarded responses in their first language under controlled experimental conditions (N = 1,274, with subsamples responding in Bulgarian, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish). We measured the time to initiate a response (RT) and interkeypress intervals, and calculated measures of name and spelling agreement. There was a tendency across all languages for quicker RTs to pictures with higher familiarity, image agreement, and name frequency, and with higher name agreement. Effects of spelling agreement and effects on output rates after writing onset were present in some, but not all, languages. Written naming therefore shows name retrieval effects that are similar to those found in speech, but our findings suggest the need for cross-language comparisons as we seek to understand the orthographic retrieval and/or assembly processes that are specific to written output

    Use of the Latin script in non-Latin script languages

    This study examines the use of the Latin script in languages where the Latin script is not the official writing system. The aim of the research is to get a general perception of where and why the Latin script is used in those languages. The study concentrates on the use of the Latin script of individual writers, especially in informal writing situations online. The study also examines if the individuals have seen the Latin script used by others. In addition, the study finds out about the keyboard functionality when writing in the Latin and non-Latin scripts. Many case studies have covered the phenomenon of digraphia, which is a situation where one language uses two writing systems. However, a broader crosslinguistic study has not been done on this topic. The Latin script is the dominant script on the Internet which might have an impact on the script choice in online writing. Internet language and chatting are broadly studied but because of the continuously changing nature of the Internet, more research is required on these topics. This study aims to fill in some of the gaps that are left open by previous research. I gathered data by an online questionnaire and by four semi-structured interviews. By means of the questionnaire, I got open question answers and quantitative data from 142 respondents. Additionally, I had four interviews with representative users of different writing systems to get more detailed information about the use of the Latin script. The data was analysed and compared with previous research from the point of view of five groups of different scripts. The general finding of this study is that the respondents choose to write in the Latin script mostly when the non-Latin keyboard in not available or when fast and easy informal writing style is required. The Latin script has many different functions. It is mostly used in online chatting, texting with friends or when one’s personal information needs to be written in travelling documents. However, people prefer to write in the official non-Latin script even though it might sometimes feel difficult or slow to use. The study points out that it cannot be predicted whether a respondent uses the Latin script or not, since the results are mostly very variable. The need or even the eagerness to use the Latin script when it is not the official script, reflects the functions and facilities that are available or unavailable for different scripts

    Integration of digital twin to augmented reality in industrial enrichment plants:an anticipated user experience study

    Abstract. Understanding user experience is necessary in developmental phases of every service, program and system. However, when adopting new technology, the early developmental phases methods and metrics used in user experience are not sufficient in anticipation of situational use and use cases of users. Therefore, focus and perspective to anticipated user experience research early in the development phase is needed. These problems are also true in ubiquitous computing field of Industry 4.0 where human computer interaction is in constant flux. New types of technologies and solutions are emerging and constantly seeking ways to capture their market share, bring added value or to revolutionize the industrial field without first understanding the anticipated requirements. This is true also for different industrial process control applications like digital twins and ways that augmented reality could be utilized in the on-site and monitoring operations. This thesis determines what the anticipated user experiences are for the professionals working in the industry and how applications can be integrated to augmented reality in industrial contexts. To tackle this issues artifact and gamification as design method will be utilized. Anticipated user experience study approach is applied and combined with early developmental artifact in the interviews. Research data is collected both qualitatively and quantitatively, but the main research method and data analysis is implemented with qualitative data. Contributions of this thesis is to determine if the use of early developmental artifact helps with the anticipations of user experiences and use cases for new technology adaptations to augmented reality in industrial contexts. This thesis proposes the term artifact specificity constraint and contributes to a model for converged relations of virtual reality continuum and digital twins. This thesis outlays a coding scheme with nine categories to be used as a reference for similar focused research

    Matched-accent processing: Bulgarian-English bilinguals do not have a processing advantage with Bulgarian-accented English over native English speech

This study explores ISIB, considering listener proficiency. According to second language learning theories, the listener’s second language proficiency determines the extent to which they rely on their first language phonetics, hence the magnitude of ISIB may be affected by listener proficiency. The accuracy and reaction times of Bulgarian-English bilinguals living in the UK were recorded in a lexical decision task. The English stimuli were produced by native English speakers and Bulgarian-English bilinguals. Listeners responded more slowly and less accurately to the matched-accent stimuli than the native English stimuli. In addition, they adapted their reaction times faster to new speakers with a native English accent compared to a Bulgarian accent. However, the listeners with the lowest English proficiency had no advantage in reaction times and accuracy for either accent. The results offer mixed support for ISIB for Talkers and are consistent with second language learning theories, according to which listeners rely less on their native language phonology when their proficiency in the second language has increased.This study was funded by the full-time doctoral bursary of Queen Margaret University.https://www.journal-labphon.org/inpressinpres

    A generic framework to create and use QR codes and a usage case in the field of access control under Android

    This project describes the development of a framework for secure exchange of secret information based on QR codes. The framework is programmed to be platform-independent. A possible usage scenario in the field of access control is described and a program to fit said scenario is presented, which runs on Android. Various design considerations are discussed and a number of possible off-the-label uses are considered. At the end, a road map for future improvements is presented. The present document has been drawn up to show the steps in the development of the framework in detail.El presente proyecto describe el desarrollo de un framework para el intercambio seguro de información secreta basado en códigos QR. El framework se desarrolla independientemente de la plataforma operativa. Se describe un posible uso en el ámbito del control de acceso y se presenta un programa ejemplo de su uso bajo Android. Se sustenta el diseño elegido y se presentan algunos posibles usos en otros ámbitos. Al final, se presenta una posible vía de futura evolución de la plataforma.
