Discrete-time recurrent neural networks with time-varying delays: Exponential stability analysis
This is the post print version of the article. The official published version can be obtained from the link below - Copyright 2007 Elsevier LtdThis Letter is concerned with the analysis problem of exponential stability for a class of discrete-time recurrent neural networks (DRNNs) with time delays. The delay is of the time-varying nature, and the activation functions are assumed to be neither differentiable nor strict monotonic. Furthermore, the description of the activation functions is more general than the recently commonly used Lipschitz conditions. Under such mild conditions, we first prove the existence of the equilibrium point. Then, by employing a Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, a unified linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is developed to establish sufficient conditions for the DRNNs to be globally exponentially stable. It is shown that the delayed DRNNs are globally exponentially stable if a certain LMI is solvable, where the feasibility of such an LMI can be easily checked by using the numerically efficient Matlab LMI Toolbox. A simulation example is presented to show the usefulness of the derived LMI-based stability condition. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the UK under Grant GR/S27658/01, the Nuffield Foundation of the UK under Grant NAL/00630/G, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany, the Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Education Committee of China (05KJB110154), the NSF of Jiangsu Province of China (BK2006064), and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (10471119)
On exponential stability for linear discrete-time systems in Banach spaces
In this paper we investigate four concepts of exponential stability for
difference equations in Banach spaces. Characterizations of these concepts are
given. They can be considered as variants for the discrete-time case of the
classical results due to E.A. Barbashin [2] and R. Datko [5]. An illustrative
example clarifies the relations between these concepts.Comment: Computers & Mathematics with Applications, accepted for publicatio
A Time-Varying Complex Dynamical Network Model And Its Controlled Synchronization Criteria
Today, complex networks have attracted increasing attention from various
fields of science and engineering. It has been demonstrated that many complex
networks display various synchronization phenomena. In this paper, we introduce
a time-varying complex dynamical network model. We then further investigate its
synchronization phenomenon and prove several network synchronization theorems.
Especially, we show that synchronization of such a time-varying dynamical
network is completely determined by the inner-coupling matrix, and the
eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of the coupling configuration
matrix of the network.Comment: 13 page

The network under investigation is quite general to reflect the reality, where the state delays are allowed to be time varying with given lower and upper bounds, and the stochastic disturbances are assumed to be Brownian motions that affect not only the network coupling but also the overall networks. By utilizing the Lyapunov functional method combined with linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques, we obtain several sufficient delay-dependent conditions that ensure the coupled networks to be globally exponentially synchronized in the mean square. A control law is designed to synchronize the addressed coupled complex networks in terms of certain LMIs that can be readily solved using the Matlab LMI toolbox. Two numerical examples are presented to show the validity of our theoretical analysis results. This work was supported by the Royal Society Sino-British Fellowship Trust Award of the

Filtering for nonlinear genetic regulatory networks with stochastic disturbances
In this paper, the filtering problem is investigated for nonlinear genetic regulatory networks with stochastic disturbances and time delays, where the nonlinear function describing the feedback regulation is assumed to satisfy the sector condition, the stochastic perturbation is in the form of a scalar Brownian motion, and the time delays exist in both the translation process and the feedback regulation process. The purpose of the addressed filtering problem is to estimate the true concentrations of the mRNA and protein. Specifically, we are interested in designing a linear filter such that, in the presence of time delays, stochastic disturbances as well as sector nonlinearities, the filtering dynamics of state estimation for the stochastic genetic regulatory network is exponentially mean square stable with a prescribed decay rate lower bound beta. By using the linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique, sufficient conditions are first derived for ensuring the desired filtering performance for the gene regulatory model, and the filter gain is then characterized in terms of the solution to an LMI, which can be easily solved by using standard software packages. A simulation example is exploited in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design procedures

A delay-dependent LMI approach to dynamics analysis of discrete-time recurrent neural networks with time-varying delays
This is the post print version of the article. The official published version can be obtained from the link below - Copyright 2007 Elsevier Ltd.In this Letter, the analysis problem for the existence and stability of periodic solutions is investigated for a class of general discrete-time recurrent neural networks with time-varying delays. For the neural networks under study, a generalized activation function is considered, and the traditional assumptions on the boundedness, monotony and differentiability of the activation functions are removed. By employing the latest free-weighting matrix method, an appropriate Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional is constructed and several sufficient conditions are established to ensure the existence, uniqueness, and globally exponential stability of the periodic solution for the addressed neural network. The conditions are dependent on both the lower bound and upper bound of the time-varying time delays. Furthermore, the conditions are expressed in terms of the linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which can be checked numerically using the effective LMI toolbox in MATLAB. Two simulation examples are given to show the effectiveness and less conservatism of the proposed criteria. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 50608072, an International Joint Project sponsored by the Royal Society of the UK and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany
Variance-constrained dissipative observer-based control for a class of nonlinear stochastic systems with degraded measurements
The official published version of the article can be obtained from the link below. This paper is concerned with the variance-constrained dissipative control problem for a class of stochastic nonlinear systems with multiple degraded measurements, where the degraded probability for each sensor is governed by an individual random variable satisfying a certain probabilistic distribution over a given interval. The purpose of the problem is to design an observer-based controller such that, for all possible degraded measurements, the closed-loop system is exponentially mean-square stable and strictly dissipative, while the individual steady-state variance is not more than the pre-specified upper bound constraints. A general framework is established so that the required exponential mean-square stability, dissipativity as well as the variance constraints can be easily enforced. A sufficient condition is given for the solvability of the addressed multiobjective control problem, and the desired observer and controller gains are characterized in terms of the solution to a convex optimization problem that can be easily solved by using the semi-definite programming method. Finally, a numerical example is presented to show the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed algorithm. This work was supported in part by the Distinguished Visiting Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering of the UK, the Royal Society of the UK, the GRF HKU 7137/09E, the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 61028008, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Project of China under Grant 2009DFA32050, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany
