    Assessing temporary speed restrictions and associated unavailability costs in railway infrastructure

    This paper analyses the occurrence of temporary speed restrictions in railway infrastructure associated with railway track geometry degradation. A negative binomial regression model is put forward to estimate the expected number of temporary speed restrictions, controlling for the main quality indicators of railway track geometry degradation and for the maintenance and renewal actions/decisions. The prediction of temporary speed restrictions provides a quantitative way to support the assessment of unavailability costs to railway users. A case study on the Lisbon–Oporto Portuguese line is explored, comparing three statistical models: the Poisson, the ‘over-dispersed’ Poisson and the proposed negative binomial regression. Main findings suggest that the main quality indicators for railway track geometry degradation are statistically significant variables, apart from the maintenance and renewal actions. Finally, a discussion on the impacts of the unavailability costs associated with temporary speed restrictions is also provided in a regulated railway context.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Models for Data Analysis in Accelerated Reliability Growth

    This work develops new methodologies for analyzing accelerated testing data in the context of a reliability growth program for a complex multi-component system. Each component has multiple failure modes and the growth program consists of multiple test-fix stages with corrective actions applied at the end of each stage. The first group of methods considers time-to-failure data and test covariates for predicting the final reliability of the system. The time-to-failure of each failure mode is assumed to follow a Weibull distribution with rate parameter proportional to an acceleration factor. Acceleration factors are specific to each failure mode and test covariates. We develop a Bayesian methodology to analyze the data by assigning a prior distribution to each model parameter, developing a sequential Metropolis-Hastings procedure to sample the posterior distribution of the model parameters, and deriving closed form expressions to aggregate component reliability information to assess the reliability of the system. The second group of methods considers degradation data for predicting the final reliability of a system. First, we provide a non-parametric methodology for a single degradation process. The methodology utilizes functional data analysis to predict the mean time-to-degradation function and Gaussian processes to capture unit-specific deviations from the mean function. Second, we develop parametric model for a component with multiple dependent monotone degradation processes. The model considers random effects on the degradation parameters and a parametric life-stress relationship. The assumptions are that degradation increments follow an Inverse Gaussian process and a Copula function captures the dependency between them. We develop a Bayesian and a maximum likelihood procedure for estimating the model parameters using a two-stage process: (1) estimate the parameters of the degradation processes as if they were independent and (2) estimate the parameters of the Copula function using the estimated cumulative distribution function of the observed degradation increments as observed data.     Accelerated degradation modeling considering long-range dependence and unit-to-unit variability

    Accelerated degradation testing (ADT) is an effective way to evaluate the reliability and lifetime of highly reliable products. Existing studies have shown that the degradation processes of some products are non-Markovian with long-range dependence due to the interaction with environments. Besides, the degradation processes of products from the same population generally vary from each other due to various uncertainties. These two aspects bring great difficulty for ADT modeling. In this paper, we propose an improved ADT model considering both long-range dependence and unit-to-unit variability. To be specific, fractional Brownian motion (FBM) is utilized to capture the long-range dependence in the degradation process. The unit-to-unit variability among multiple products is captured by a random variable in the degradation rate function. To ensure the accuracy of the parameter estimations, a novel statistical inference method based on expectation maximization (EM) algorithm is proposed, in which the maximization of the overall likelihood function is achieved. The effectiveness of the proposed method is fully verified by a simulation case and a microwave case. The results show that the proposed model is more suitable for ADT modeling and analysis than existing ADT models

    Contribution to reliable control of dynamic systems

    This thesis presents sorne contributions to the field of Health-Aware Control (HAC) of dynamic systems. In the first part of this thesis, a review of the concepts and methodologies related to reliability versus degradation and fault tolerant control versus health-aware control is presented. Firstly, in an attempt to unify concepts, an overview of HAC, degradation, and reliability modeling including some of the most relevant theoretical and applied contributions is given. Moreover, reliability modeling is formalized and exemplified using the structure function, Bayesian networks (BNs) and Dynamic Bayesian networks (DBNs) as modeling tools in reliability analysis. In addition, some Reliability lmportance Measures (RIMs) are presented. In particular, this thesis develops BNs models for overall system reliability analysis through the use of Bayesian inference techniques. Bayesian networks are powerful tools in system reliability assessment due to their flexibility in modeling the reliability structure of complex systems. For the HAC scheme implementation, this thesis presents and discusses the integration of actuators health information by means of RIMs and degradation in Model Predictive Control (MPC) and Linear Quadratic Regulator algorithms. In the proposed strategies, the cost function parameters are tuned using RIMs. The methodology is able to avoid the occurrence of catastrophic and incipient faults by monitoring the overall system reliability. The proposed HAC strategies are applied to a Drinking Water Network (DWN) and a multirotor UAV system. Moreover, a third approach, which uses MPC and restricts the degradation of the system components is applied to a twin rotor system. Finally, this thesis presents and discusses two reliability interpretations. These interpretations, namely instantaneous and expected, differ in the manner how reliability is evaluated and how its evolution along time is considered. This comparison is made within a HAC framework and studies the system reliability under both approaches.Aquesta tesi presenta algunes contribucions al camp del control basat en la salut dels components "Health-Aware Control" (HAC) de sistemes dinàmics.     Modeling the spatial distribution of larval fish abundance provides essential information for management

    Productive fisheries are strongly linked to the ecological state of the essential habitats. In this study, we developed a methodology to assess the most important reproduction habitats of fish by using larval survey data and Bayesian species distribution models that predict the spatial distribution and abundance of fish larvae. Our case study with four commercially and ecologically important fish species in the coastal zone of the northern Baltic Sea demonstrated that the production of fish stocks can be concentrated to an extremely limited area compared to the entire suitable production area. The area suitable for larval production varied from 3.7% to 99.8% between species, but the smallest area responsible for 80% of the cumulative larval production was two to five times more limited, varying from 1.4% to 52.9% between species. Hence, instead of the traditional approach of modeling only habitat suitability for fish production, marine spatial planning and management should take into account the areal production potential. Moreover, the developed methodology enables linking of the total production potential across the whole distribution area to fisheries stock assessment and management.Peer reviewe

    Obesity and Hyperbolic Discounting: An Experimental Analysis

    Behavioral economists maintain that addictions such as alcoholism, smoking and over-eating represent examples of present-bias in decision making that is fundamentally irrational. In this article, we develop a model of present bias and apparently hyperbolic discounting that is fully consistent with rational behavior. We construct an experiment to test our hypothesis and to determine whether discount rates differ for individuals who engage in behaviors that could endanger their health. Our results show that discount functions are quasi-hyperbolic in shape, and that obesity and drinking are positively related to the discount rate.     Count regression models for recreation demand: an application to Clear Lake

    An important objective for policy-makers is how to allocate resources for the enjoyment of its citizens. Outdoor recreation is a very popular hobby for a lot of people. The sites they travel to for recreational purposes are public sites such as the Clear Lake, located in central Iowa. The users of the lake often care about the quality of the water. It is the goal of the researcher to determine how much they are willing to pay in order to preserve or improve the water quality. The researcher must decide on not only the theoretical methodology, but the appropriate statistical model. The focus of this thesis is using count data models to estimate individuals\u27 willingness to pay. A common count data model is the Poisson model, however it is restrictive and often alternative models must be used. This thesis introduces a new count data model to the literature: The Conway-Maxwell-Poisson regression model. Using the data gathered by individual users at Clear Lake, I contrast this model with a popular alternate to the Poisson model, the negative binomial model
