L.E.A.D.ing with Purpose: Exploring a Compensatory School\u27s Student Success Solutions

    Get PDF
In this intrinsic case study, the researcher investigates the University of Windsor\u27s Bachelor of Education enrichment course called Leadership Experience in Academic Direction (L.E.A.D.) as it is utilized in a compensatory school in Southwestern Ontario. The researcher explores the perceptions of Pre-Service L.E.A.D. Teachers, the Student Success Teacher (SST), the Principal, The Vice-Principal, the Course Instructor, and a Teacher Facilitator concerning the increase in L.E.A.D. Pre-Service Teacher human capital within the compensatory secondary school. The author argues that such an increase contributes to the overall implementation of the school\u27s student success strategies, adapted from Adlai Stevenson High School\u27s intervention model depicted in Raising the Bar and Closing the Gap (DuFour, DuFour, Eaker, & Karhanek, 2010). Participants were interviewed and a focus group was conducted on the perception of this phenomenon to narrow the gap of critical awareness around the benefits resulting from the collaboration of enrichment courses at the Faculty of Education and local schools, especially with respect to addressing the needs of at-risk students, interpersonal professional growth, and raising awareness of student success strategies. The result of this study indicated five main themes that were presented amongst the research. The themes were: i) the collective is a benefit; ii) visibility and accountability; iii) shift in teaching approaches; iv) increased individual support; and, v) holistic education. Research findings indicate that the L.E.A.D. program shapes teachers into mindful educators equipped with foundational knowledge that bolsters student success in diverse classroom environments

Exploring Data Quality in Games With a Purpose

    Get PDF
A key problem for crowd-sourcing systems is motivating contributions from participants and ensuring the quality of these contributions. Games have been suggested as a motivational approach to encourage contribution, but attracting participation through game play rather than scientific interest raises concerns about the quality of the data provided, which is particularly important when the data are to be used for scientific research. To assess whether these concerns are justified, we compare the quality of data obtained from two citizen science games, one a "gamified" version of a species classification task and one a fantasy game that used the classification task only as a way to advance in the game play. Surprisingly, though we did observe cheating in the fantasy game, data quality (i.e., classification accuracy) from participants in the two games was not significantly different. As well, the quality of data from short-time contributors was at a usable level of accuracy. These findings suggest that various approaches to gamification can be useful for motivating contributions to citizen science projects.publishedye

Introduction to The origins of hospitality and tourism

    Get PDF
The key focus of the book is on exploring the textural evidence from and about Classical Antiquity in order to identify aspects of the origins of hospitality and tourism. In nearly all cases the prime purpose of the texts was not to do with recording the history of hospitality. The content of this book focuses on the analysis of the incidences of hospitality that were identified. Consequently this is not a history book, although references are made and detail provided to help the reader to locate the incidences within the historic framework

Stellar Filaments in Self-Interacting Brans-Dicke Gravity

    Get PDF
This paper is devoted to study cylindrically symmetric stellar filaments in self-interacting Brans-Dicke gravity. For this purpose, we construct polytropic filamentary models through generalized Lane-Emden equation in Newtonian regime. The resulting models depend upon the values of cosmological constant (due to scalar field) along with polytropic index and represent a generalization of the corresponding models in general relativity. We also investigate fragmentation of filaments by exploring the radial oscillations through stability analysis. This stability criteria depends only upon the adiabatic index.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in EPJ

Locating Rousseau\u27s Legislator in the Social Contract

    Get PDF
It is challenging to define precisely what role the legislator plays in Rousseau’s Social Contract; however, when viewed in light of the ancient guardians, the role of the legislator becomes less obscure. This paper pursues the similarities between Rousseau’s concept of the legislator and Plato’s concept of the guardian while also exploring the poignant differences between the two. One cannot help but notice their fundamental similarities such as the superior character and intelligence of the legislator and how each communicates with the people. Their ultimate purpose and legitimacy differs, however, in that the legislator plays a more esoteric role in his relation to the people to order to persuade them of his ideas. Conversely, the guardian’s purpose is one of enlightenment through reason; he never has to persuade anyone of anything

A facility to Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) at the CERN SPS

    Get PDF
A new general purpose fixed target facility is proposed at the CERN SPS accelerator which is aimed at exploring the domain of hidden particles and make measurements with tau neutrinos. Hidden particles are predicted by a large number of models beyond the Standard Model. The high intensity of the SPS 400~GeV beam allows probing a wide variety of models containing light long-lived exotic particles with masses below O{\cal O}(10)~GeV/c2^2, including very weakly interacting low-energy SUSY states. The experimental programme of the proposed facility is capable of being extended in the future, e.g. to include direct searches for Dark Matter and Lepton Flavour Violation.Comment: Technical Proposa

ALT Strategy, February 2011 to January 2014

    Get PDF
The Association for Learning Technology (ALT) is an independent educational charity. ALT's charitable object is "to advance education through increasing, exploring and disseminating knowledge in the field of learning technology for the benefit of the general public". This document sets out our strategy for the three years February 2011 to January 2014. The strategy is reviewed and updated annually. Its main purpose is to: · translate ALT’s single charitable object into a practical strategy; · provide people and organisations inside and outside ALT with an overview of ALT’s approach; · set priority activities to shape the work of ALT’s committees, office-holders and staff

The Role of Spirituality and Religiosity in Persons Living With Sickle Cell Disease

    Get PDF
Purpose: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a serious debilitating chronic illness, affecting approximately 90,000 Americans and millions globally. Spirituality and religiosity (S/R) may ease the burden faced by persons living with SCD. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of S/R in adolescents and adults living with SCD in the research literature. Method: The electronic databases Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Health Source Nursing/Academic, ProQuest Health Module, PsycINFO, Medline, PubMed, and the American Theological Library Association were searched from January 1995 to December 2014. Findings: Of the 89 studies retrieved, 11 articles between 2001 and 2013 met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed. Four themes emerged. The themes included (a) S/R as sources of coping, (b) S/R enhance pain management, (c) S/R influence health care utilization, and (d) S/R improve quality of life. Discussion: Use of S/R may be significant in coping with SCD, managing pain, affecting hospitalizations, and affecting quality of life. This review can direct researchers exploring S/R in adolescents and adults living with SCD
