    Get PDF
This paper proposes a conceptual model of a context-aware group support system (GSS) to assist local council employees to perform collaborative tasks in conjunction with inter- and intra-organisational stakeholders. Most discussions about e-government focus on the use of ICT to improve the relationship between government and citizen, not on the relationship between government and employees. This paper seeks to expose the unique culture of UK local councils and to show how a GSS could support local government employer and employee needs

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between Business Process Re-Engineering (BPR) and performance of Islamic banking branches in Kedah from the perspective of Maqasid Al-Shari’ah. BPR factors are operationalized by strategic alignment, management commitment, change management, customer focus, BPR project management and IT infrastructure. The questionnaires were sent directly to branches and collected by hand. Simple random sampling was used for sample selection. 63 questionnaires were sent to managers’ Islamic banking, 59 samples were returned but only 54 samples were used for data analysis. The data was analyzed using ‘Statistical Package for Social Science’ SPSS version 21. Collectively, the result shows that the BPR are able to influence the performance of Islamic banking in Kedah branches. The BPR are able to influence overall performance of Islamic banks and others three (3) dimension of performance (educating individual, establish justice and public interest). However, for individually, analysis using multiple regression analysis indicates that only management commitment, customer focus and BPR project management are able to influence overall Islamic banking performance. In term of dimension banks performance, customer focus and BPR project management are influences dimension of educating individual. While, in dimension of establish justice and public interest, only customer focus are able to influence. Therefore, the managerial of Islamic banking in Kedah branches should focus on the management commitment, customer focus and BPR project management in order to enhance the performance of their banks. The outcome of this study provides important insights to both managers and researchers for further understanding about BPR factors and Islamic banks performanc

Collaborative Business Process Management: Exploring Themes, Achievements, and Perspectives

    Get PDF
Under labels such as global value chains, global production networks, interconnected firms, or outsourcing cross-boundary business processes have gained significant attention in practice and research. However, only little research has yet systematically examined the implications of crossboundary business processes for Business Process Management (BPM). These cross-boundary business processes together with the drivers of collaboration and network management as well as governance form one of the key challenges for today’s BPM research. In this study we thus systematically review literature and seek to answer whether BPM research in Information Systems (IS) has yet embraced and explored the concept of collaboration. We find that collaborative BPM is a growing trend in IS research, but that there still exist significant research gaps. Therefore, we propose a research agenda that points at potentially fruitful directions for future research

Globalization Issues in Information Systems Education: Toward a Collaborative Multischool Systems Analysis Experience

    Get PDF
The problems and complexity associated with globalization directly impact the Information Systems curriculum, especially with respect to the formation and management of teams of systems analysts. Though it is not feasible, nor desirable, to provide instruction to IS students in how to relate to all cultures when confronted with team membership whose occupants possess differing skills, cultures, and beliefs, a suitable experience can be given to students in the Systems Analysis class. Extending beyond the usual set of well-defined, unambiguous in-class problems is the external real-world problem in which complexity and ambiguity reign in problems stretching beyond traditional borders and into the global marketplace. To provide the Systems Analysis and Design class with a simulated experience of working in the global environment we have utilized actual problems from the commercial, governmental, manufacturing, and nonprofit industries. To experience these situations and provide for the development of some expertise in dealing with these problems, students are placed into teams and given the responsibility for problem solving to the satisfaction of the industry principals. Two types of student teams are identified: homogeneous or single school teams, and heterogeneous (dyad or triad) school teams. Homogeneous teams share common instruction, a common body of knowledge, and inter-team commitment and accountability, while heterogeneous teams find incompatibilities in their basic level of shared and unshared knowledge, CASE tools, methodological approaches to problem solving, commitment to solving the problem, and team accountability. Homogeneous team experiences are useful in establishing team work habits and allowing students the opportunity of dealing with known personalities, and heterogeneous teams extend that experience to include opportunities involving unknown individual personalities, intra-team commitment and accountability, and the pressure of deriving an acceptable solution regardless of obstacles. We suggest this experience can be used to satisfy portions of sections 2.4, 2.10, and 3.7 in the IS\u2795 Model Curriculum

Stakeholder Involvement in Business Process Management Agenda-Setting and Implementation

    Get PDF
Process management serves the design of IT and organizations, while multiple actors have stakes in setting the agenda and implementing process innovations. These stakeholders, from both inside and outside an organization‟s boundaries, constitute integral elements of a larger network of actors. The stimulation and utilization of such networks are critical success factors for process management and innovation initiatives. Without the inclusion of stakeholders, adaption of organizational processes to a dynamic environment can be expected to be less effective and less successful. Although the importance of process management networks and stakeholder inclusion is widely acknowledged in the literature, current research lacks a thorough empirically informed understanding of the phenomenon. Taking the public sector example, this paper sets out to study empirically the involvement of different stakeholders and to develop a theory for analysis of process management collaboration. We conduct a comprehensive quantitative survey of more than 350 organizations and apply principle component analysis to identify distinct sets of stakeholders. Empirical evidence is provided for collaborative patterns of internal actors, vertical collaboration partners, horizontal collaboration partners, political actors, commercial actors, and customers. These patterns can serve as generic theory constructs, building blocks, for future research on process management stakeholders and solving issue in research and practice regarding stakeholder involvement

A review of information flow diagrammatic models for product-service systems

    Get PDF
A product-service system (PSS) is a combination of products and services to create value for both customers and manufacturers. Modelling a PSS based on function orientation offers a useful way to distinguish system inputs and outputs with regards to how data are consumed and information is used, i.e. information flow. This article presents a review of diagrammatic information flow tools, which are designed to describe a system through its functions. The origin, concept and applications of these tools are investigated, followed by an analysis of information flow modelling with regards to key PSS properties. A case study of selection laser melting technology implemented as PSS will then be used to show the application of information flow modelling for PSS design. A discussion based on the usefulness of the tools in modelling the key elements of PSS and possible future research directions are also presented

A New Framework for Strategic Information Systems in Airline Industry

Stiff competition in the Airline sector mandates airlines to innovate ways to gain a competitive advantage over their rivals; however, without a strong IT the mission to attain this would be arduous. Large airlines do their best to maximise the use of enterprise systems to stream their business processes. Nonetheless, some airlines are not up to date with technology and are left with few choices when attempting to secure their existence in today’s harsh market. One option is to implement bleeding edge systems concurrently (which is our focus in this paper) due to the fact that very scant research exists regarding this phenomenon, let alone the airline sector itself. The aim of this study is explore and investigate the phenomenon of deploying multi enterprise systems concurrently due to its uniqueness and owing to the fact that this approach is not the common practice most airline undertake. We argue here that having multi Airline Solution Providers (ASP) working together concurrently to constitute a homogeneous solution generates many aspects that necessitate a deep understanding in such matters as competitor ASPs and technology leakage. In addition, the study explored various themes that unleash the phenomenon of the concurrent Multi- collaborative Enterprise Systems (MES). The role of cohesion factors that groups the rivals to work under the umbrella of an organisation was also embarked upon in this study. Various aspects contributing to the success of the MES phenomenon have been exposed with regarding ASP’s interplay, organisation, and other contextual surrounding MES. Finally, this study drew a strategic frame work for airlines that unleash the MES phenomenon. A large airline and its collaborative airline solutions provider were taken as the scope of study; the airline had over twenty six thousand employees. Five reputable world class ASPs in the airline industry in various fields were also included. The twenty five participants in this study were professionals in IT and the airline business besides being involved heavily in the phenomenon of deploying concurrent multi enterprise systems. Grounded Theory techniques were used to analyse the large volume of data gathered underpinning this by using state of art software package such as nVivo. This research has explored the phenomenon under study using grounded theory methodology to build a theoretical model that best presents the MES initiative. In addition, it has offered a well-founded framework that explains the MES phenomenon in details, which is relevant to both practitioners and researchers. This research has clearly explored and demonstrated the inhibitors and enablers in the undertaking of MES. In particular, it has focused on enablers of the organisation that received the MES. Furthermore, it has explored the interrelationship between ASPs and exposed some of the aspects that need more focus between rivals working on the same project.Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabi

The purpose of this research study is to find the impact of organizational resistance to change on BPR implementation. This paper proposed that Human related factors, Organization related factors and IT training are responsible for explaining the organizational resistance and have a positive impact on the success of BPR implementation. A questionnaire survey is conducted in the State Bank of Pakistan where BPR is done. The results have shown that explanatory factors influence the BPR implementation up to 65.7% and have a significant and positive impact on the latter. When the human related factors and organizational factors are taken care of, and proper IT training is given to the employees, it helps the organization to manage any resistance coming up with a change process, and hence it results in the successful implementation of BPR.
