Supporting Knowledge Sharing Visibility: A Qualitative Analysis

    Get PDF
Knowledge sharing visibility is a critical environmental factor which can reduce social loafing in knowledge sharing. This is especially true in IT-based knowledge sharing. As such, it is imperative that we better understand how to design IT-based Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) to support high knowledge sharing visibility. This paper examines the impact of knowledge management technology functions (e.g., tracking, knowledge storing) on knowledge sharing visibility through qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with participants in a Chinese company. Impact and implications of use for their existing KMS are examined. Results encourage applied statistical, tracking, knowledge distribution and knowledge storing functions for monitoring explicit knowledge sharing, and suggest integration of knowledge maps with communication tools (e.g., instant messenger) to support visibility for implicit knowledge sharing. Extension to use of web 2.0 technologies (e.g., weblogs) in KMS is also explored

Knowledge Management Goals Revisited – A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Social Software Adoption in Corporate Environments

    Get PDF
When it comes to tools serving as knowledge management instruments, social software has gained increasing importance. Whereas corporate social software is almost unanimously recognised to have enabled a fundamental shift in the ways of interacting and communicating within a company, the implementation approaches taken vary a lot from company to company and have not yet been examined in detail. This is also true for the goals set when introducing such tools, as well as for the implementation strategy as a whole. Against this background, we have studied and analysed social software adoption in 23 companies and derived six main goals of corporate social software adoption. These were consequently compared with the goals of knowledge management projects and initiatives, as identified in a series of well-known knowledge management studies. While some of the goals set for the introduction of corporate social software seem to coincide with those resulting from knowledge management studies, some others appear to be new and specific for corporate social software

Don’t throw rocks from the side-lines: A sociomaterial exploration of organizational blogs as boundary objects

    Get PDF
Purpose Social media such as blogs are being widely used in organizations in order to undertake internal communication and share knowledge, rendering them important boundary objects. A root metaphor of the boundary object domain is the notion of relatively static and inert objects spanning similarly static boundaries. A strong sociomaterial perspective allows the immisciblity of object and boundary to be challenged, since a key tenet of this perspective is the ongoing and mutually-constituted performance of the material and social. Design/methodology/approach The aim of our research is to draw upon sociomateriality to explore the operation of social media platforms as intra-organizational boundary objects. Given the novel perspective of this study and its social constructivist ontology, we adopt an exploratory, interpretivist research design. This is operationalized as a case study of the use of an organizational blog by a major UK government department over an extended period. A novel aspect of the study is our use of data released under a Freedom of Information request. Findings We present three exemplar instances of how the blog and organizational boundaries were performed in the situated practice of the case study organization. We draw on literature on boundary objects, blogs and sociomateriality in order to provide a theoretical explication of the mutually-constituted performance of the blog and organizational boundaries. We also invoke the notion of ‘extended chains of intra-action’ to theorise changes in the wider organization. Originality/value Adoption of a sociomaterial lens provides a highly novel perspective of boundary objects and organizational boundaries. The study highlights the indeterminate and dynamic nature of boundary objects and boundaries, with both being in an intra-active state of becoming, challenging conventional conceptions. The study demonstrates that specific material-discursive practices arising from the situated practice of the blog at the respective boundaries were performative, reconfiguring the blog and boundaries and being generative of further changes in the organization

The adoption of social enterprise software

Social enterprise software is a highly promising software application for firms, though it is still in an infancy state. It offers rapid real-time information transfer based on business collaboration tools or instant messaging. The software collects and processes customer data from surveys, consumer feedback, reviews, blogs or social networks. This enables firms to build up detailed customer profiles potentially anticipating upcoming trends. We analyze the determinants of social enterprise software adoption based on the literature on the adoption of new technologies. In our analysis, we control for factors like firm size, intensity of information and communication technology, human capital and international competitive situation. Exploiting recent German firm-level data and a model controlling for sample selection, the results reveal that firms with highly qualified workers, a large share of young employees and international business activity are more likely to adopt social enterprise software. Larger and more ICT-intensive firms and recent innovators also have a higher propensity to use social enterprise software. In addition, firms belonging to the service sector are more eager to implement social enterprise software applications than manufacturing firms. --enterprise software, social software, social enterprise software

This paper aims to explore three predictors of Theory Planned Behaviour (attitude, subjective norm and Perceived Behaviors Control) towards the knowledge sharing behavior. Knowledge sharing behavior has become a major issue and is commonly highlighted in the study of knowledge management. Researchers have given serious attention to identify the determinants of knowledge sharing behavior. Employees have to be motivated to share their knowledge and experience in the workplace. In order to influence knowledge sharing behavior among employees, organizations need to understand the tools that drive employees to share their knowledge willingly with others. This paper discusses three predictors of Theory Planned Behavior which have significantly influenced knowledge sharing behavior. A questionnaire survey was administered to the selected group of employees from tourism and hospitality industries in Cyberjaya Malaysia. The 207 employees were participating in this research study. The instrument was adapted from previous study. The result reveals that an absence of attitude is not significantly related to knowledge sharing behavior. However, subjective norms and perceived behavior control relate significantly. This study implies that changes of attitude in individual promote and encourage knowledge sharing behavior positively. The findings of this study proposed to the organization to influence employee to embed the knowledge sharing culture to the employee. The organization needs to change the attitude of employee in term of willingness of them to share knowledge with co-workers. The possibilities of this circumstance happen because of lack awareness of knowledge sharing benefits, lack of rewards and recognition to their contribution and competition among themselves which need to do further study
