    Exploring the physical channel of diffusion-based molecular communication by simulation

    Diffusion-based molecular communication is a promising bio-inspired paradigm to implement nanonetworks, i.e., the interconnection of nanomachines. The peculiarities of the physical channel in diffusion-based molecular communication require the development of novel models, architectures and protocols for this new scenario, which need to be validated by simulation. With this purpose, we present N3Sim, a simulation framework for diffusion-based molecular communication. N3Sim allows to simulate scenarios where transmitters encode the information by releasing molecules into the medium, thus varying their local concentration. N3Sim models the movement of these molecules according to Brownian dynamics, and it also takes into account their inertia and the interactions among them. Receivers decode the information by sensing the particle concentration in their neighborhood. The benefits of N3Sim are multiple: the validation of channel models for molecular communication and the evaluation of novel modulation schemes are just a few examples.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft

    Analytical Derivation of the Impulse Response for the Bounded 2-D Diffusion Channel

    This paper focuses on the derivation of the distribution of diffused particles absorbed by an agent in a bounded environment. In particular, we analogously consider to derive the impulse response of a molecular communication channel in 2-D and 3-D environment. In 2-D, the channel involves a point transmitter that releases molecules to a circular absorbing receiver that absorbs incoming molecules in an environment surrounded by a circular reflecting boundary. Considering this setup, the joint distribution of the molecules on the circular absorbing receiver with respect to time and angle is derived. Using this distribution, the channel characteristics are examined. Furthermore, we also extend this channel model to 3-D using a cylindrical receiver and investigate the channel properties. We also propose how to obtain an analytical solution for the unbounded 2-D channel from our derived solutions, as no analytical derivation for this channel is present in the literature.Comment: 13 pages and 5 figure

    At present there exists a large gap in size, performance, adaptability and robustness between natural and artificial information processors for performing coherent perception-action tasks under real-time constraints. Even the simplest organisms have an enviable capability of coping with an unknown dynamic environment. Robots, in contrast, are still clumsy if confronted with such complexity. This paper presents a bio-hybrid architecture developed for exploring an alternate approach to the control of autonomous robots. Circuits prepared from amoeboid plasmodia of the slime mold Physarum polycephalum are interfaced with an omnidirectional hexapod robot. Sensory signals from the macro-physical environment of the robot are transduced to cellular scale and processed using the unique micro-physical features of intracellular information processing. Conversely, the response form the cellular computation is amplified to yield a macroscopic output action in the environment mediated through the robot’s actuators
