    An integrated core competence evaluation framework for portfolio management in the oil industry

    Drawing upon resource-based theory, this paper presents a core competence evaluation framework for managing the competence portfolio of an oil company. It introduces a network typology to illustrate how to form different types of strategic alliance relations with partnering firms to manage and grow the competence portfolio. A framework is tested using a case study approach involving face-to-face structured interviews. We identified purchasing, refining and sales and marketing as strong candidates to be the core competencies. However, despite the company's core business of refining oil, the core competencies were identified to be their research and development and performance management (PM) capabilities. We further provide a procedure to determine different kinds of physical, intellectual and cultural resources making a dominant impact on company's competence portfolio. In addition, we provide a comprehensive set of guidelines on how to develop core competence further by forging a partnership alliance choosing an appropriate network topology

    The gaining popularity of Knowledge Management (KM) has been reinforced by the quest for innovation and value creation. Value creation is grounded in the appropriate combination of human networks, social capital, intellectual capital, and technology assets, facilitated by a culture of change. It is indicated that the future of KM tends to focus on the study of the impact on people in terms of value or knowledge value creation. Because of this, the positive relationship between KM and value creation has been discussed extensively in the literature. However, the majority of the studies on knowledge value creation have been widely undertaken to highlight several case studies demonstrating success in developed countries, whilst very few studies have been done in the cultural context of developing countries. These studies in developing economies have identified several distinctive features, in particular socio-cultural factors that have an important role and influence in KM practices. A call has been made for further research to explore KM in different organisational and cultural contexts in developing economies. Thailand is an example of a developing country where a number of distinctive socio-cultural features have been identified. It therefore represents an interesting case to conduct a study on the influence of these cultural features on KM practices within an organisational context. The objective of this empirical study is to explore knowledge value creation practices in a Thai organisation. The research adopts an interpretive stance and employs a case study approach involving multiple data collection methods. It is based on the researcher's personal expertise and close involvement in the selected case study organisation for over a decade. The study characterises Thai distinctive culture in terms of collectiveness, shyness, conscientiousness and seniority, and indicates that these distinctive socio-cultural features critically influence (a) the social network ties and relationships between employees within and across teams, (b) the resulting level of trust between employees, and (c) the ability to share and create knowledge effectively in the organisational socio-cultural environment. The study is limited to a Thai organisation, but can be generalised to other organisations that exhibit similar characteristics. It provides interesting insights into the socio-cultural factors affecting knowledge management adoption in a Thai organisation and a foundation to further the research on the validation of the theoretical model that emerged from this empirical study.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    The proponents of resource-based theory argue that efficient management of core competence portfolio provides sustainable competitive advantages. However, literature demonstrates little evidence regarding (i) how to identify core competence, specifically for a company operating in the oil sector, (ii) how to identify tangible and intangible resources related to the core competence of the company, and (iii) how to manage a company’s competence portfolio more efficiently by forging network alliances with collaborating firms. Drawing upon resource-based theory this paper presents a core competence evaluation framework for managing the competence portfolio of an oil company. The paper introduces a network typology to illustrate how to form different types of strategic alliance relations with partnering firms to manage and grow the competence portfolio. The framework is tested using a case study approach involving face-to-face structured interviews with twenty-five divisional managers of a large oil company in the Middle East. We identified purchasing, refining and sales and marketing as strong candidates to be the core competencies of the company. However, despite the company’s core business of refining oil, the core competencies were identified to be their research and development and performance management (PM) capabilities. We further provide a procedure to determine different kinds of physical, intellectual and cultural resources making a dominant impact on company’s competence portfolio. In addition, we provide a comprehensive set of guidelines on how to develop core competence further by forging a partnership alliance choosing an appropriate network topology. The paper makes many contributions to the field of strategic management and core competence evaluation in the oil sector. The guidelines provided can assist practitioners with devising appropriate network relationships with partnering companies in order to outsource, divest, protect and/or develop their core competence portfolio

    Effect of Supply Chain Cultural Competence on Thai SMEs Performance with Mediating Role of Supply Chain Technology

    Performance is a key indicator for the survival of any business. Organizational culture must have strong liaison with the goals of organizations because it has direct association with organizational performance. Therefore, the core objective of this study was to investigate the influence of supply chain cultural capabilities on the performance of Thai SMEs with the mediation role of supply chain technology adoption. To achieve the objective of this study, the data was collected from the managers of SMEs by using survey questioner approach. Smart-PLS was used to test the hypotheses and analysis of data. Findings of contemporary study highlighted that supply chain cultural capabilities have significant positive influence on the performance of SMEs in Thailand. Furthermore, results indicated that supply chain technology adoption could increase the performance of organizations. Results of this research illuminated that Adaptability and consistency in organizational cultural support in the adoption of supply chain technology and supply chain technology boost up the performance of organization. This research offer new empirical indication that supply chain cultural capabilities are significant for the performance of SMEs in developing countries like Thailand. Though, this research used only cultural capabilities, the other important capabilities of supply chain such as supply chain technological capabilities, would be used in future research

Social capital theory will be used as a theoretical lens to understand the impact and implications of individual use of Enterprise 2.0. To ascertain the impact from the use of Enterprise 2.0 on the various dimensions of social capital, a single in-depth qualitative case study was conducted with a large professional services organisation. The findings unfold the different areas of impacts based on actual individual use and experience.     This study is concerned with the factors that influence the cooperation among cluster-based firms. Theorists have consistently demonstrated the role and importance of economic externalities, such as knowledge spillovers, within industrial clusters. Less attention has been paid to the investigation of social based externalities, though it has been suggested that these may also accrue from geographical agglomeration. This study explores the development of cooperation between firms operating in a single industry sector and in close proximity. The results suggest that social networking has a greater influence than geographic proximity in facilitating inter-firm co-operation.     Collaboration Strategies to Reduce Technical Debt

    Inadequate software development collaboration processes can allow technical debt to accumulate increasing future maintenance costs and the chance of system failures. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore collaboration strategies software development leaders use to reduce the amount of technical debt created by software developers. The study population was software development leaders experienced with collaboration and technical debt at a large health care provider in the state of California. The data collection process included interviews with 8 software development leaders and reviewing 19 organizational documents relating to software development methods. The extended technology acceptance model was used as the conceptual framework to better understand the social and cognitive influences on the perceived usefulness of collaboration in reducing technical debt. An inductive analysis of the data was used for coding, triangulation, and identifying themes related to the use of collaboration strategies to reduce technical debt. Prominent themes included using collaboration at all stages of development, using continuous verification processes, promoting a participatory culture, and using tools to support distributed teams. The study findings showed an environment that promotes collaboration, a culture that encourages participation, and accessibility to collaborative tools that may reduce technical debt in software projects. The results of this study may contribute to positive social change by demonstrating how individuals with diverse backgrounds and different perspectives can work together to improve critical software that people depend on every day
