    Tato diplomová práce práce se zabývá plánováním cesty všesměrového mobilního robotu pomocí algoritmu RRT (Rapidly-exploring Random Tree – Rychle rostoucí náhodný strom). Teoretická část popisuje základní algoritmy plánování cesty a prezentuje bližší pohled na RRT a jeho potenciál. Praktická část práce řeší návrh a tvorbu v zásadě multiplatformní C++ aplikace v prostředí Windows 7 za použití aplikačního frameworku Qt 4.8.0, která implementuje pokročilé RRT algoritmy s parametrizovatelným řešičem a speciálním dávkovým režimem. Tento mód slouží k testování efektivnosti nastavení řešiče pro dané úlohy a je založen na post-processingu a vizualizaci výstupu měřených úloh pomocí jazyka Python. Vypočtené cesty mohou být vylepšeny pomocí zkracovacích algoritmů a výsledná trajektorie odeslána do pohonů Maxon Compact Drive všesměrové mobilní platformy pomocí CANopen. Aplikace klade důraz na moderní grafické uživatelské rozhraní se spolehlivým a výkonným 2D grafickým engine.This master's thesis deals with path planning of omnidirectional mobile robot using the RRT algorithm (Rapidly-exploring Random Tree). Theoretical part describes basic algorithms of path planning and presents closer view on RRT and its potential. Practical part deals with designing and creation of essentially multiplatform C++ application in Windows 7 environment with Qt 4.8.0 application framework, which implements advanced RRT algorithms with user-programmable solver and special batch mode. This mode is used for testing the effectiveness of solver on given tasks and it is based on postprocessing and visualization of measurement tasks output by Python language. Computed paths can be enhanced by shortening algorithms and result trajectory sent to Maxon Compact Drives of omnidirectional platform via the CANopen. Application puts emphasis on modern GUI with reliable and powerful 2D graphics engine.

    Multi-task near-field perception for autonomous driving using surround-view fisheye cameras

Die Dynamik änderte sich von einem primitiven Organismus, der auf den Kontakt mit der Nahrung wartete, zu einem Organismus, der durch visuelle Sensoren gesucht wurde. Das menschliche Auge ist eine der raffiniertesten Entwicklungen der Evolution, aber es hat immer noch Mängel. Der Mensch hat über Millionen von Jahren einen biologischen Wahrnehmungsalgorithmus entwickelt, der in der Lage ist, Autos zu fahren, Maschinen zu bedienen, Flugzeuge zu steuern und Schiffe zu navigieren. Die Automatisierung dieser Fähigkeiten für Computer ist entscheidend für verschiedene Anwendungen, darunter selbstfahrende Autos, Augmented Realität und architektonische Vermessung. Die visuelle Nahfeldwahrnehmung im Kontext von selbstfahrenden Autos kann die Umgebung in einem Bereich von 0 - 10 Metern und 360° Abdeckung um das Fahrzeug herum wahrnehmen. Sie ist eine entscheidende Entscheidungskomponente bei der Entwicklung eines sichereren automatisierten Fahrens. Jüngste Fortschritte im Bereich Computer Vision und Deep Learning in Verbindung mit hochwertigen Sensoren wie Kameras und LiDARs haben ausgereifte Lösungen für die visuelle Wahrnehmung hervorgebracht. Bisher stand die Fernfeldwahrnehmung im Vordergrund. Ein weiteres wichtiges Problem ist die begrenzte Rechenleistung, die für die Entwicklung von Echtzeit-Anwendungen zur Verfügung steht. Aufgrund dieses Engpasses kommt es häufig zu einem Kompromiss zwischen Leistung und Laufzeiteffizienz. Wir konzentrieren uns auf die folgenden Themen, um diese anzugehen: 1) Entwicklung von Nahfeld-Wahrnehmungsalgorithmen mit hoher Leistung und geringer Rechenkomplexität für verschiedene visuelle Wahrnehmungsaufgaben wie geometrische und semantische Aufgaben unter Verwendung von faltbaren neuronalen Netzen. 2) Verwendung von Multi-Task-Learning zur Überwindung von Rechenengpässen durch die gemeinsame Nutzung von initialen Faltungsschichten zwischen den Aufgaben und die Entwicklung von Optimierungsstrategien, die die Aufgaben ausbalancieren.The formation of eyes led to the big bang of evolution. The dynamics changed from a primitive organism waiting for the food to come into contact for eating food being sought after by visual sensors. The human eye is one of the most sophisticated developments of evolution, but it still has defects. Humans have evolved a biological perception algorithm capable of driving cars, operating machinery, piloting aircraft, and navigating ships over millions of years. Automating these capabilities for computers is critical for various applications, including self-driving cars, augmented reality, and architectural surveying. Near-field visual perception in the context of self-driving cars can perceive the environment in a range of 0 - 10 meters and 360° coverage around the vehicle. It is a critical decision-making component in the development of safer automated driving. Recent advances in computer vision and deep learning, in conjunction with high-quality sensors such as cameras and LiDARs, have fueled mature visual perception solutions. Until now, far-field perception has been the primary focus. Another significant issue is the limited processing power available for developing real-time applications. Because of this bottleneck, there is frequently a trade-off between performance and run-time efficiency. We concentrate on the following issues in order to address them: 1) Developing near-field perception algorithms with high performance and low computational complexity for various visual perception tasks such as geometric and semantic tasks using convolutional neural networks. 2) Using Multi-Task Learning to overcome computational bottlenecks by sharing initial convolutional layers between tasks and developing optimization strategies that balance tasks

Veículos inteligentes, por exemplo, frequentemente baseiam suas decisões em observações obtidas a partir de vários sensores tais como LIDAR, GPS e câmeras. Atualmente, sensores de câmera têm recebido grande atenção pelo motivo de que eles são de baixo custo, fáceis de utilizar e fornecem dados com rica informação. Ambientes urbanos representam um interessante mas também desafiador cenário neste contexto, onde o traçado das ruas podem ser muito complexos, a presença de objetos tais como árvores, bicicletas, veículos podem gerar observações parciais e também estas observações são muitas vezes ruidosas ou ainda perdidas devido a completas oclusões. Portanto, o processo de percepção por natureza precisa ser capaz de lidar com a incerteza no conhecimento do mundo em torno do veículo. Nesta tese, este problema de percepção é analisado para a condução nos ambientes urbanos associado com a capacidade de realizar um deslocamento seguro baseado no processo de tomada de decisão em navegação autônoma. Projeta-se um sistema de percepção que permita veículos robóticos a trafegar autonomamente nas ruas, sem a necessidade de adaptar a infraestrutura, sem o conhecimento prévio do ambiente e considerando a presença de objetos dinâmicos tais como veículos. Propõe-se um novo método baseado em aprendizado de máquina para extrair o contexto semântico usando um par de imagens estéreo, a qual é vinculada a uma grade de ocupação evidencial que modela as incertezas de um ambiente urbano desconhecido, aplicando a teoria de Dempster-Shafer. Para a tomada de decisão no planejamento do caminho, aplica-se a abordagem dos tentáculos virtuais para gerar possíveis caminhos a partir do centro de referencia do veículo e com base nisto, duas novas estratégias são propostas. Em primeiro, uma nova estratégia para escolher o caminho correto para melhor evitar obstáculos e seguir a tarefa local no contexto da navegação hibrida e, em segundo, um novo controle de malha fechada baseado na odometria visual e o tentáculo virtual é modelado para execução do seguimento de caminho. Finalmente, um completo sistema automotivo integrando os modelos de percepção, planejamento e controle são implementados e validados experimentalmente em condições reais usando um veículo autônomo experimental, onde os resultados mostram que a abordagem desenvolvida realiza com sucesso uma segura navegação local com base em sensores de câmeraAbstract: The development of autonomous vehicles capable of getting around on urban roads can provide important benefits in reducing accidents, in increasing life comfort and also in providing cost savings. Intelligent vehicles for example often base their decisions on observations obtained from various sensors such as LIDAR, GPS and Cameras. Actually, camera sensors have been receiving large attention due to they are cheap, easy to employ and provide rich data information. Inner-city environments represent an interesting but also very challenging scenario in this context, where the road layout may be very complex, the presence of objects such as trees, bicycles, cars might generate partial observations and also these observations are often noisy or even missing due to heavy occlusions. Thus, perception process by nature needs to be able to deal with uncertainties in the knowledge of the world around the car. While highway navigation and autonomous driving using a prior knowledge of the environment have been demonstrating successfully, understanding and navigating general inner-city scenarios with little prior knowledge remains an unsolved problem. In this thesis, this perception problem is analyzed for driving in the inner-city environments associated with the capacity to perform a safe displacement based on decision-making process in autonomous navigation. It is designed a perception system that allows robotic-cars to drive autonomously on roads, without the need to adapt the infrastructure, without requiring previous knowledge of the environment and considering the presence of dynamic objects such as cars. It is proposed a novel method based on machine learning to extract the semantic context using a pair of stereo images, which is merged in an evidential grid to model the uncertainties of an unknown urban environment, applying the Dempster-Shafer theory. To make decisions in path-planning, it is applied the virtual tentacle approach to generate possible paths starting from ego-referenced car and based on it, two news strategies are proposed. First one, a new strategy to select the correct path to better avoid obstacles and to follow the local task in the context of hybrid navigation, and second, a new closed loop control based on visual odometry and virtual tentacle is modeled to path-following execution.     Map-based localization for urban service mobile robotics

    Mobile robotics research is currently interested on exporting autonomous navigation results achieved in indoor environments, to more challenging environments, such as, for instance, urban pedestrian areas. Developing mobile robots with autonomous navigation capabilities in such urban environments supposes a basic requirement for a upperlevel service set that could be provided to an users community. However, exporting indoor techniques to outdoor urban pedestrian scenarios is not evident due to the larger size of the environment, the dynamism of the scene due to pedestrians and other moving obstacles, the sunlight conditions, and the high presence of three dimensional elements such as ramps, steps, curbs or holes. Moreover, GPS-based mobile robot localization has demonstrated insufficient performance for robust long-term navigation in urban environments. One of the key modules within autonomous navigation is localization. If localization supposes an a priori map, even if it is not a complete model of the environment, localization is called map-based. This assumption is realistic since current trends of city councils are on building precise maps of their cities, specially of the most interesting places such as city downtowns. Having robots localized within a map allows for a high-level planning and monitoring, so that robots can achieve goal points expressed on the map, by following in a deliberative way a previously planned route. This thesis deals with the mobile robot map-based localization issue in urban pedestrian areas. The thesis approach uses the particle filter algorithm, a well-known and widely used probabilistic and recursive method for data fusion and state estimation. The main contributions of the thesis are divided on four aspects: (1) long-term experiments of mobile robot 2D and 3D position tracking in real urban pedestrian scenarios within a full autonomous navigation framework, (2) developing a fast and accurate technique to compute on-line range observation models in 3D environments, a basic step required by the real-time performance of the developed particle filter, (3) formulation of a particle filter that integrates asynchronous data streams and (4) a theoretical proposal to solve the global localization problem in an active and cooperative way, defining cooperation as either information sharing among the robots or planning joint actions to solve a common goal.Actualment, la recerca en robòtica mòbil té un interés creixent en exportar els resultats de navegació autònoma aconseguits en entorns interiors cap a d'altres tipus d'entorns més exigents, com, per exemple, les àrees urbanes peatonals. Desenvolupar capacitats de navegació autònoma en aquests entorns urbans és un requisit bàsic per poder proporcionar un conjunt de serveis de més alt nivell a una comunitat d'usuaris. Malgrat tot, exportar les tècniques d'interiors cap a entorns exteriors peatonals no és evident, a causa de la major dimensió de l'entorn, del dinamisme de l'escena provocada pels peatons i per altres obstacles en moviment, de la resposta de certs sensors a la il.luminació natural, i de la constant presència d'elements tridimensionals tals com rampes, escales, voreres o forats. D'altra banda, la localització de robots mòbils basada en GPS ha demostrat uns resultats insuficients de cara a una navegació robusta i de llarga durada en entorns urbans. Una de les peces clau en la navegació autònoma és la localització. En el cas que la localització consideri un mapa conegut a priori, encara que no sigui un model complet de l'entorn, parlem d'una localització basada en un mapa. Aquesta assumpció és realista ja que la tendència actual de les administracions locals és de construir mapes precisos de les ciutats, especialment dels llocs d'interés tals com les zones més cèntriques. El fet de tenir els robots localitzats en un mapa permet una planificació i una monitorització d'alt nivell, i així els robots poden arribar a destinacions indicades sobre el mapa, tot seguint de forma deliberativa una ruta prèviament planificada. Aquesta tesi tracta el tema de la localització de robots mòbils, basada en un mapa i per entorns urbans peatonals. La proposta de la tesi utilitza el filtre de partícules, un mètode probabilístic i recursiu, ben conegut i àmpliament utilitzat per la fusió de dades i l'estimació d'estats. Les principals contribucions de la tesi queden dividides en quatre aspectes: (1) experimentació de llarga durada del seguiment de la posició, tant en 2D com en 3D, d'un robot mòbil en entorns urbans reals, en el context de la navegació autònoma, (2) desenvolupament d'una tècnica ràpida i precisa per calcular en temps d'execució els models d'observació de distàncies en entorns 3D, un requisit bàsic pel rendiment del filtre de partícules a temps real, (3) formulació d'un filtre de partícules que integra conjunts de dades asíncrones i (4) proposta teòrica per solucionar la localització global d'una manera activa i cooperativa, entenent la cooperació com el fet de compartir informació, o bé com el de planificar accions conjuntes per solucionar un objectiu comú

    Principles of Neural Network Architecture Design - Invertibility and Domain Knowledge

    Neural networks architectures allow a tremendous variety of design choices. In this work, we study two principles underlying these architectures: First, the design and application of invertible neural networks (INNs). Second, the incorporation of domain knowledge into neural network architectures. After introducing the mathematical foundations of deep learning, we address the invertibility of standard feedforward neural networks from a mathematical perspective. These results serve as a motivation for our proposed invertible residual networks (i-ResNets). This architecture class is then studied in two scenarios: First, we propose ways to use i-ResNets as a normalizing flow and demonstrate the applicability for high-dimensional generative modeling. Second, we study the excessive invariance of common deep image classifiers and discuss consequences for adversarial robustness. We finish with a study of convolutional neural networks for tumor classification based on imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) data. For this application, we propose an adapted architecture guided by our knowledge of the domain of IMS data and show its superior performance on two challenging tumor classification datasets

    Deep Learning for Scene Text Detection, Recognition, and Understanding

    Detecting and recognizing texts in images is a long-standing task in computer vision. The goal of this task is to extract textual information from images and videos, such as recognizing license plates. Despite that the great progresses have been made in recent years, it still remains challenging due to the wide range of variations in text appearance. In this thesis, we aim to review the existing issues that hinder current Optical Character Recognition (OCR) development and explore potential solutions. Specifically, we first investigate the phenomenon of unfair comparisons between different OCR algorithms caused due to the lack of a consistent evaluation framework. Such an absence of a unified evaluation protocol leads to inconsistent and unreliable results, making it difficult to compare and improve upon existing methods. To tackle this issue, we design a new evaluation framework from the aspect of datasets, metrics, and models, enabling consistent and fair comparisons between OCR systems. Another issue existing in the field is the imbalanced distribution of training samples. In particular, the sample distribution largely depended on where and how the data was collected, and the resulting data bias may lead to poor performance and low generalizability on under-represented classes. To address this problem, we took the driving license plate recognition task as an example and proposed a text-to-image model that is able to synthesize photo-realistic text samples. By using this model, we synthesized more than one million samples to augment the training dataset, significantly improving the generalization capability of OCR models. Additionally, this thesis also explores the application of text vision question answering, which is a new and emerging research topic among the OCR community. This task challenges the OCR models to understand the relationships between the text and backgrounds and to answer the given questions.     Information-theoretic environment modeling for mobile robot localization

    To enhance robotic computational efficiency without degenerating accuracy, it is imperative to fit the right and exact amount of information in its simplest form to the investigated task. This thesis conforms to this reasoning in environment model building and robot localization. It puts forth an approach towards building maps and localizing a mobile robot efficiently with respect to unknown, unstructured and moderately dynamic environments. For this, the environment is modeled on an information-theoretic basis, more specifically in terms of its transmission property. Subsequently, the presented environment model, which does not specifically adhere to classical geometric modeling, succeeds in solving the environment disambiguation effectively. The proposed solution lays out a two-level hierarchical structure for localization. The structure makes use of extracted features, which are stored in two different resolutions in a single hybrid feature-map. This enables dual coarse-topological and fine-geometric localization modalities. The first level in the hierarchy describes the environment topologically, where a defined set of places is described by a probabilistic feature representation. A conditional entropy-based criterion is proposed to quantify the transinformation between the feature and the place domains. This criterion provides a double benefit of pruning the large dimensional feature space, and at the same time selecting the best discriminative features that overcome environment aliasing problems. Features with the highest transinformation are filtered and compressed to form a coarse resolution feature-map (codebook). Localization at this level is conducted through place matching. In the second level of the hierarchy, the map is viewed in high-resolution, as consisting of non-compressed entropy-processed features. These features are additionally tagged with their position information. Given the identified topological place provided by the first level, fine localization corresponding to the second level is executed using feature triangulation. To enhance the triangulation accuracy, redundant features are used and two metric evaluating criteria are employ-ed; one for dynamic features and mismatches detection, and another for feature selection. The proposed approach and methods have been tested in realistic indoor environments using a vision sensor and the Scale Invariant Feature Transform local feature extraction. Through experiments, it is demonstrated that an information-theoretic modeling approach is highly efficient in attaining combined accuracy and computational efficiency performances for localization. It has also been proven that the approach is capable of modeling environments with a high degree of unstructuredness, perceptual aliasing, and dynamic variations (illumination conditions; scene dynamics). The merit of employing this modeling type is that environment features are evaluated quantitatively, while at the same time qualitative conclusions are generated about feature selection and performance in a robot localization task. In this way, the accuracy of localization can be adapted in accordance with the available resources. The experimental results also show that the hybrid topological-metric map provides sufficient information to localize a mobile robot on two scales, independent of the robot motion model. The codebook exhibits fast and accurate topological localization at significant compression ratios. The hierarchical localization framework demonstrates robustness and optimized space and time complexities. This, in turn, provides scalability to large environments application and real-time employment adequacies
