    Evolution for our time: a theory of legal memetics

    The purpose of this paper is to explore the significance for legal thought of recent developments in evolutionary theory which are associated with the notion of 'memetics'. 'Memetics' aims to account for processes of cultural transmission and change using a version of the 'genetic metaphor'. This is the idea that patterns of cultural evolution are closely analogous to those which occur in the natural world as a result of the interaction between genes, organisms and environments. At a further, more ambitious level, the initial metaphor gives way to a search for mechanisms which unite biological and cultural evolution.     A study on like-attracts-like versus elitist selection criterion for human-like social behavior of memetic mulitagent systems

    Memetic multi agent system emerges as an enhanced version of multiagent systems with the implementation of meme-inspired computational agents. It aims to evolve human-like behavior of multiple agents by exploiting the Dawkins' notion of a meme and Universal Darwinism. Previous research has developed a computational framework in which a series of memetic operations have been designed for implementing humanlike agents. This paper will focus on improving the human-like behavior of multiple agents when they are engaged in social interactions. The improvement is mainly on how an agent shall learn from others and adapt its behavior in a complex dynamic environment. In particular, we design a new mechanism that supervises how the agent shall select one of the other agents for the learning purpose. The selection is a trade-off between the elitist and like-attracts-like principles. We demonstrate the desirable interactions of multiple agents in two problem domains

    Structured Memetic Automation for Online Human-like Social Behavior Learning

    Meme automaton is an adaptive entity that autonomously acquires an increasing level of capability and intelligence through embedded memes evolving independently or via social interactions. This paper begins a study on memetic multiagent system (MeMAS) toward human-like social agents with memetic automaton. We introduce a potentially rich meme-inspired design and operational model, with Darwin's theory of natural selection and Dawkins' notion of a meme as the principal driving forces behind interactions among agents, whereby memes form the fundamental building blocks of the agents' mind universe. To improve the efficiency and scalability of MeMAS, we propose memetic agents with structured memes in this paper. Particularly, we focus on meme selection design where the commonly used elitist strategy is further improved by assimilating the notion of like-attracts-like in the human learning. We conduct experimental study on multiple problem domains and show the performance of the proposed MeMAS on human-like social behavior

    A Computational Model of Memetic Evolution: Optimizing Collective Intelligence

    The purpose of this study was to create an adaptive agent based simulation modeling the processes of creative collaboration. This model aided in the development of a new evolutionary based framework through which education scholars, academics, and professionals in all disciplines and industries can work to optimize their collective ability to find creative solutions to complex problems. The basic premise follows that the process of idea exchange, parallels the role sexual reproduction in biological evolution and is essential to society\u27s collective ability to solve complex problems. The study outlined a set of assumptions used to develop a new theory of collective intelligence. These assumptions were then translated into design requirements that were designated as parameters for a computational simulation that utilizes two types of machine learning algorithms. This model was developed, and 200 simulations were run for each of 48 different combinations of four independent variables for a total of 9,600 simulations. Statistical analysis of the data revealed a number of patterns enhancing the simulation agents\u27 collective problem solving abilities. Most notably, agents\u27 collective problem solving abilities were optimized when idea exchange between agents was balanced with individual agent time contemplating new creative strategies. Additionally, the agents\u27 collective problem solving abilities were optimized when simulation constraints did not force the agents to converge upon one potential solution

    Decision and intuition during organizational change : an evolutionary critique of dual process theory

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to review intuition in the context of organizational change. We argue that intuition as a concept requires attention and its formulation is necessary prior to its application in organizations. The paper provides a critique of Dual Process Theory and highlights shortcomings in organization theorizing of intuition. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is conceptual and provides in-depth theoretical discussions by drawing from the literature on decision and intuition in the context of organizational change. Findings: Investigating whether Dual Process Theory is sufficiently clear, we found ambiguity. Specifically, the current definition provided by Dane and Pratt is not clear in terms of its four sections: (1) The consciousness of non-conscious processing, (2) involving holistic associations, (3) that are produced rapidly, which (4) result in affectively charged judgments. Finally, we note that the Evolutionary perspective is missing and we provide foundational concepts for such a perspective, including the discussion of information templates, memes and genes, as argued by research, condition intuition. Originality/value: The paper finds that an evolutionary perspective develops a picture of intuition as an adaptive resource. This evolutionary perspective is currently absent in research and we provide foundational concepts for such a perspective. We propose specific arguments to highlight the evolutionary perspective
