    Describing Common Human Visual Actions in Images

    Which common human actions and interactions are recognizable in monocular still images? Which involve objects and/or other people? How many is a person performing at a time? We address these questions by exploring the actions and interactions that are detectable in the images of the MS COCO dataset. We make two main contributions. First, a list of 140 common `visual actions', obtained by analyzing the largest on-line verb lexicon currently available for English (VerbNet) and human sentences used to describe images in MS COCO. Second, a complete set of annotations for those `visual actions', composed of subject-object and associated verb, which we call COCO-a (a for `actions'). COCO-a is larger than existing action datasets in terms of number of actions and instances of these actions, and is unique because it is data-driven, rather than experimenter-biased. Other unique features are that it is exhaustive, and that all subjects and objects are localized. A statistical analysis of the accuracy of our annotations and of each action, interaction and subject-object combination is provided

    International audienceThe explosion of web 2.0 and social networks has created an enormous and rewarding source of information that has motivated researchers in different fields to exploit it. Our work revolves around the issue of access and identification of social information and their use in building a user profile enriched with a social dimension, and operating in a process of personalization and recommendation. We study several approaches of Social IR (Information Retrieval), distinguished by the type of incorporated social information. We also study various social recommendation approaches classified by the type of recommendation. We then present a study of techniques for modeling the social user profile dimension, followed by a critical discussion. Thus, we propose our social recommendation approach integrating an advanced social user profile model.L’explosion du web 2.0 et des réseaux sociaux a crée une source d’information énorme et enrichissante qui a motivé les chercheurs dans différents domaines à l’exploiter. Notre travail s’articule autour de la problématique d’accès et d’identification des informations sociales et leur exploitation dans la construction d’un profil utilisateur enrichi d’une dimension sociale, et son exploitation dans un processus de personnalisation et de recommandation. Nous étudions différentes approches sociales de RI (Recherche d’Information), distinguées par le type d’informations sociales incorporées. Nous étudions également diverses approches de recommandation sociale classées par le type de recommandation. Nous exposons ensuite une étude des techniques de modélisation de la dimension sociale du profil utilisateur, suivie par une discussion critique.     Semantic annotation of digital music

    AbstractIn recent times, digital music items on the internet have been evolving in a vast information space where consumers try to find/locate the piece of music of their choice by means of search engines. The current trend of searching for music by means of music consumersʼ keywords/tags is unable to provide satisfactory search results. It is argued that search and retrieval of music can be significantly improved provided end-usersʼ tags are associated with semantic information in terms of acoustic metadata – the latter being easy to extract automatically from digital music items. This paper presents a lightweight ontology that will enable music producers to annotate music against MPEG-7 description (with its acoustic metadata) and the generated annotation may in turn be used to deliver meaningful search results. Several potential multimedia ontologies have been explored and a music annotation ontology, named mpeg-7Music, has been designed so that it can be used as a backbone for annotating music items

    Do peers see more in a paper than its authors?

    Recent years have shown a gradual shift in the content of biomedical publications that is freely accessible, from titles and abstracts to full text. This has enabled new forms of automatic text analysis and has given rise to some interesting questions: How informative is the abstract compared to the full-text? What important information in the full-text is not present in the abstract? What should a good summary contain that is not already in the abstract? Do authors and peers see an article differently? We answer these questions by comparing the information content of the abstract to that in citances-sentences containing citations to that article. We contrast the important points of an article as judged by its authors versus as seen by peers. Focusing on the area of molecular interactions, we perform manual and automatic analysis, and we find that the set of all citances to a target article not only covers most information (entities, functions, experimental methods, and other biological concepts) found in its abstract, but also contains 20% more concepts. We further present a detailed summary of the differences across information types, and we examine the effects other citations and time have on the content of citances

    Exploring library anxiety among Sudanese university students

    Library anxiety is one of the psychological barriers that encounter students when they are performing a library task. This study explores library anxiety among 51 Sudanese university students using diary method for data collection. The finding indicates that library anxiety among Sudanese university students are manifested into five dimensions, namely; (a) Negative perceptions towards library environment, (b) Negative perceptions towards peer students, (c) Negative perceptions towards library staff, (d) Negative perceptions towards library services, and (e) Psychological barriers. Details of statements under the dimensions highlight the issues that are unique and not covered by previous studies in library anxiety
