Attention Allocation Aid for Visual Search

This paper outlines the development and testing of a novel, feedback-enabled attention allocation aid (AAAD), which uses real-time physiological data to improve human performance in a realistic sequential visual search task. Indeed, by optimizing over search duration, the aid improves efficiency, while preserving decision accuracy, as the operator identifies and classifies targets within simulated aerial imagery. Specifically, using experimental eye-tracking data and measurements about target detectability across the human visual field, we develop functional models of detection accuracy as a function of search time, number of eye movements, scan path, and image clutter. These models are then used by the AAAD in conjunction with real time eye position data to make probabilistic estimations of attained search accuracy and to recommend that the observer either move on to the next image or continue exploring the present image. An experimental evaluation in a scenario motivated from human supervisory control in surveillance missions confirms the benefits of the AAAD.Comment: To be presented at the ACM CHI conference in Denver, Colorado in May 201

Dawn of autonomous vehicles: review and challenges ahead

    Get PDF
This paper reviews the state of the art on autonomous vehicles as of 2017, including their impact at socio-economic, energy, safety, congestion and land-use levels. This impact study focuses on the issues that are common denominators and are bound to arise independently of regional factors, such as (but not restricted to) change to vehicle ownership patterns and driver behaviour, opportunities for energy and emissions savings, potential for accident reduction and lower insurance costs, and requalification of urban areas previously assigned to parking. The challenges that lie ahead for carmakers, law and policy makers are also explored, with an emphasis on how these challenges affect the urban infrastructure and issues they create for municipal planners and decision makers. The paper concludes with strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis that integrates and relates all these aspects.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Attributes of narrative game aesthetics for perceived cultural learning

    Get PDF
Previous researches are mostly concerned on non-holistic game aesthetics for learning in various interactive media platforms. There is lack of studies on attributes of narrative games aesthetics which may contribute to perceived cultural learning. Therefore, this study aims to propose a conceptual model of narrative game aesthetics for perceived cultural learning. Three specific objectives were formulated: (i) to determine game aesthetics that contribute to perceived cultural learning in narrative games, (ii) to develop a narrative game based on the determined game aesthetics, and (iii) to produce empirical evidence on the contribution of game aesthetics towards perceived cultural learning. The research methodology comprises of three main phases: conceptual model development, prototype development, and user evaluation. For the first phase, the conceptual model was developed based on previous literature and reviewed by six experts. In the second phase, prototype development was then developed according to the conceptual model. Finally, user evaluation was employed using quasi experiment which involved 43 participants. Data analysis is conducted using descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and observation. Findings indicate that six out of 10 attributes namely image and graphic; layout; shape and form; texture; voice; and music, are significantly correlated to perceived cultural learning. The observation results also indicate that these attributes can amplify game experience for perceived cultural learning. In a nutshell, this study has identified attributes of narrative game aesthetics for perceived cultural learning. It further provides empirical evidence on contributions of these attributes of narrative game aesthetics to perceived cultural learning. The outcome of this study will provide guidelines for narrative game designers and developers whom interested to inculcate cultural learning in their game

The Representation of Reunion 212 in Indonesian Online Media

Reunion 212 which is the action of a series of previous actions was reported by many media in Indonesia. Each media portrays the action differently. This critical discourse analysis attempts to uncover the practice of power in Indonesian online media regarding the rally. Three reunion 212-related articles published on December 2, 2017 from each of CNN Indonesia.com and Republika Online were collected as the data of the study. Those online media were chosen as preliminary study informs that they frequently take different point of view whey they are reporting moslem or islamic related issues. The data collected were analyzed using van Dijk discourse analysis approach which consisted of text analysis, social cognition, and social context. The findings confirm that CNN Indonesia.com is more concerned about the adverse effects of the action and the purpose of the action which is considered politically charged, while Republika Online brings more humanist themes eventhough it also does not deny the potential political purpose behind the action. The themes are supported by certain lexical and discourse strategies such as word choice, theme choice, cohesion, and coherence. Moreover, the power practice is more visible in CNN Indonesia.com which attempts to convince readers that the action is bad and orientates itself more toward political purposes. While the news from Republika Online is more informative and only contains the positive side of the action

Don’t Forget the Importance of Leisure Occupations for the Community Dwelling Elder

    Get PDF
Leisure exploration is important to the community dwelling elder (CDE) as research indicates that social and leisure activities correlate with well-being in this population (Adams et al., 2011). This research project aimed to gain insight on the CDE’s perspective on leisure as they age in place and the role occupational therapists play in leisure promotion for this population. This mixed method study included quantitative data from the Activity Card Sort (ACS) assessment which provided data on how leisure and activities of daily living have changed with aging. Qualitative data was gained through semi-structured interview and explored the perspectives of the elderly population through their lived experience of aging in the community. The reason for collecting both quantitative and qualitative data was to gain stronger evidence on the changes elders in the community face while aging in place. There were originally 5 participants in this study recruited through convenience sampling, however only 3 completed the full study. The CDEs in this study experienced a decline in their participation in leisure occupations based on self-reports. Occupational therapy has a role in promoting healthcare among this population and can be beneficial to the CDE’s emotional, physical, and social well-being

Journey to Refuge: Understanding Refugees, Exploring Trauma, and Best Practices for Newcomers and Schools

Pre-K through 12th grade schools within the United States have become much more diverse in recent years. Schools are now commonly not only diverse because of diverse students born in the United States, but also have many immigrant students. A growing number of these immigrant students are resettled children who have refugee status. In schools, these recent immigrants are called newcomers. This book is a culmination of research and anecdotal experiences regarding the refugee issue as it pertains to these students in American schools and schools elsewhere in the world. Scholars, policy makers, educators, those who work in the refugee field, artists, musicians, and others have come together to provide this resource of fifteen chapters that address three areas regarding the refugee student. This information is designed to help educators and volunteers who work with newcomer students and includes a) what it means to be a refugee, b) how the newcomer student may be affected by trauma, and c) best practices for the classroom. Additionally, fifteen spotlight sections highlight valuable resources, ideas, or organizations that may assist schools and educators who work with newcomer students. This book goes alongside a documentary film called Refuge in the Heartland, which the editor co-directed and is available on YouTube, and was produced by the Kansas State University College of Education. The authors and contributors of this book have direct experience in working with refugees, newcomer students, traumatized individuals, or in teacher preparation programs. The work of former students of 40 universities is represented in this text, as well as many other non-profit organizations. The artwork was done by students at Valley Center Middle School in Valley Center, Kansas and by their teacher, Marie Taylor, a graduate of the KSU College of Education Art Education Program. This book is dedicated to the children who leave a refugee camp halfway across the world on a hot summer day dressed in shorts, a T-shirt, and flip flips, and whose airplane lands on a ten-degree day in a snowy, cold place that is unlike anything they have ever experienced.https://newprairiepress.org/ebooks/1026/thumbnail.jp

The experiences of adults with intellectual disability and dysphagia:an exploratory study

    Get PDF
Background: Very little is known about the experiences of adults with Intellectual Disability (ID) and dysphagia. Research completed with other population groups suggests dysphagia can lead to depression and social isolation. Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) dysphagia management guidance currently focuses predominantly on reducing the physical risks associated with dysphagia. Aims and Objectives: The overall aim of the study is to explore the physical, social and psychological experiences of adults with ID living with dysphagia. The three objectives of the study are to develop recommendations for services working with adults with ID and dysphagia, provide a platform for a marginalised group to voice their opinions on a topic which is absent in the literature and to promote inclusive research with adults with ID. Method: A qualitative method underpinned by an interpretivist paradigm was adopted. Adults with ID were involved in the design of the study. Twelve semi-structured interviews were completed with participants with ID and dysphagia. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: People with ID can be meaningfully involved in qualitative research. Thematic analysis generated four main themes; Psychological responses to food and drink, Independence, Physical health consequences of dysphagia and SLT services. Findings indicate that along with the known physical health risks, dysphagia can also have a significant psychological and social impact on adults with ID. Conclusions: Recommendations are made for service improvements to dysphagia services. The findings indicate services should provide equal consideration of the physical, social and psychological impact of dysphagia as standard practice
