    The Challenges of Democratizing News and Information: Examining Data on Social Media, Viral Patterns and Digital Influence

    The advent of social media and peer-to-peer technologies offers the possibility of driving the full democratization of news and information, undercutting the agenda-setting of large media outlets and their relative control of news and information flows. We are now about a decade into the era of the social Web. What do the data indicate about changing news flows and access/consumption patterns in the United States? Are we witnessing a paradigm shift yet, or are legacy patterns reasserting themselves? This paper brings together media industry data and perspective—from NPR, the Boston Globe and the Wall Street Journal—with a growing body of social science and computational research produced by universities and firms such as Microsoft Research and the Facebook data science team, as well as survey findings from the Pew Research Center. The bulk of the evidence so far complicates any easy narrative, and it very much remains an open question if we can expect a more radically democratized media ecosystem, despite promising early trends and anecdotes. As I review the evidence, I aim to highlight lessons and insights that can help those thinking about and operating in the social media space. This paper also aims to serve as an accessible survey of news media-related topics within social science and social network analysis scholarship

    Blogging the hyperlocal : the disruption and renegotiation of hegemony in Malta

    This thesis examines how blogging is being deployed to disrupt institutional hegemony in Malta. The island state is an example of a hyperlocal context that includes strong political, ecclesiastical and media institutions, advanced take-up of social technologies and a popular culture adjusting to the promise of modernity represented by EU membership. Popular discourse is dominated by political partisanship and advocacy journalism, with Malta being the only European country that permits political parties to directly own broadcasting stations.The primary evidence in this study is derived from an analysis of online texts during an organic crisis that eventually led to a national referendum to consider the introduction of divorce legislation in Malta. Using netnography supplemented by critical discourse analysis, the research identifies a set of strategies bloggers used to resist, challenge and disrupt the discourse of a hegemonic alliance that included the ruling political party, the Roman Catholic Church and their media. The empirical results indicate that blogging in Malta is contributing to the erosion of the Church’s hegemony. Subjects that were previously marginalised as alternative are increasingly finding an online outlet in blog posts, social media networks and commentary on newspaper portals.Nevertheless, a culture of social surveillance together with the natural barriers of size and the permeability of the social web facilitates the appropriation of blogging by political blocs, who remain vigilant to the opportunity of extending their influence in new media to disrupt horizontal networks of information exchange. Blogging is increasingly operating as a component of a hybrid media ecosystem that thrives on reflexive cycles of entertainment: the independent newspaper media, for long an active partner in the hegemonic set up in Malta, are being transformed and rendered more permeable at the same time as their power and influence are being eroded. The study concludes that a new episteme is more likely to emerge through the symbiosis of hybrid media and reflexive waves of networked individualism than systemic, organised attempts at online political disruption

    dissertationDiabetes is a complex condition that can significantly affect quality of life and economic burden. New approaches to promoting diabetes knowledge and support to enhance diabetes management are necessary. Peer health is occurring within the diabetes online community (DOC), although very little is known about how it is being used to help manage diabetes. The purpose of this research was to better understand peer health within the nonmoderated, nontrained peer context of the DOC. In this multiple method approach, a cross-sectional survey was posted to DOC social media sites to describe adult DOC users, indicators of their health status, and perceived credibility of DOC information. A baby boomer subset of participants were interviewed to understand why they participated in the DOC, how they anticipated continued DOC use as they aged, and how they determined credibility of DOC information. Transcripts were analyzed using content analysis. Apomediation Theory guided this research. There were several significant findings. Individuals highly engaged with the DOC had better glycemic control. DOC users had high levels of diabetes self-care, health-related quality of life, and social capital. Baby boomers were using the DOC to increase their knowledge to improve self-care and for emotional support. The DOC was used in adjunct to, not in place of, regular healthcare visits to fill gaps in tacit knowledge and support. Baby boomer participants valued the wisdom of experienced individuals, "diabetes elders." Participants employed a process to find credible health information through the guidance of peers. Overall, DOC users found the DOC to be helpful with very little harm reported, suggesting DOC use is beneficial with low risk. Finally, DOC users found information from their healthcare providers to be more competent and trustworthy than information from the DOC, indicating DOC users still find their healthcare providers valuable. The findings from this research are promising. DOC users engage in a reciprocal process of sharing diabetes related experiences, encouraging knowledge attainment and support. Peer health in a naturally occurring online environment has the capacity to augment the traditional healthcare model by providing health information and peer support conveniently and at a low cost

    Keyboard warriors in cyberfights:conflict in online communities of consumption

    Nowadays, with the use of social media generalizing, increasingly more people gather online to share their passion for specific consumption activities. Despite this shared passion, conflicts frequently erupt in online communities of consumption (OCC). A systematic review of the literature revealed that a lot of knowledge has developed on OCC conflict. Different types of conflicts unfolding in an OCC context have been distinguished, various drivers of conflict identified and various consequences outlined at the individual level (experiential value) and the community level (collective engagement and community culture). However the specificity of conflicts unfolding in an OCC context has not been conceptualized. Past research is also inconclusive as to where and when does OCC conflict create or destroy value in communities. This research provides a theory of OCC conflict and its impact on value formation by conceptualizing OCC conflict as performances. The theory was developed by conducting a netnography of a clubbing forum. Close to 20,000 forum posts and 250 pages of interview transcript and field notes were collected over 27 months and analysed following the principles of grounded theory. Four different types of conflict performances are distinguished (personal, played, reality show and trolling conflict) based on the clarity of the performance. Each type of conflict performance is positioned with regard to its roots and consequences for value formation. This research develops knowledge on disharmonious interactions in OCCs contributing to the development of a less utopian perspective of OCCs. It indicates how conflict is not only a byproduct of consumption but it is also a phenomenon consumed. It also introduces the concept of performance clarity to the literature on performance consumption. This research provides guidelines to community managers on how to manage conflict and raises ethical issues regarding the management of conflict on social media

    Privacy and spectral analysis of social network randomization

    Social networks are of significant importance in various application domains. Un- derstanding the general properties of real social networks has gained much attention due to the proliferation of networked data. Many applications of networks such as anonymous web browsing and data publishing require relationship anonymity due to the sensitive, stigmatizing, or confidential nature of the relationship. One general ap- proach for this problem is to randomize the edges in true networks, and only release the randomized networks for data analysis. Our research focuses on the development of randomization techniques such that the released networks can preserve data utility while preserving data privacy. Data privacy refers to the sensitive information in the network data. The released network data after a simple randomization could incur various disclosures including identity disclosure, link disclosure and attribute disclosure. Data utility refers to the information, features, and patterns contained in the network data. Many important features may not be preserved in the released network data after a simple randomiza- tion. In this dissertation, we develop advanced randomization techniques to better preserve data utility of the network data while still preserving data privacy. Specifi- cally we develop two advanced randomization strategies that can preserve the spectral properties of the network or can preserve the real features (e.g., modularity) of the network. We quantify to what extent various randomization techniques can protect data privacy when attackers use different attacks or have different background knowl- edge. To measure the data utility, we also develop a consistent spectral framework to measure the non-randomness (importance) of the edges, nodes, and the overall graph. Exploiting the spectral space of network topology, we further develop fraud detection techniques for various collaborative attacks in social networks. Extensive theoretical analysis and empirical evaluations are conducted to demonstrate the efficacy of our developed techniques
