A Framework for Rapid Development and Portable Execution of Packet-Handling Applications
This paper presents a framework that enables the execution of packet-handling applications (such as sniffers, firewalls, intrusion detectors, etc.) on different hardware platforms. This framework is centered on the NetVM - a novel, portable, and efficient virtual processor targeted for packet-based processing - and the NetPDL - a language dissociating applications from protocol specifications. In addition, a high-level programming language that enables rapid development of packet-based applications is presented
Dimensions of Neural-symbolic Integration - A Structured Survey
Research on integrated neural-symbolic systems has made significant progress
in the recent past. In particular the understanding of ways to deal with
symbolic knowledge within connectionist systems (also called artificial neural
networks) has reached a critical mass which enables the community to strive for
applicable implementations and use cases. Recent work has covered a great
variety of logics used in artificial intelligence and provides a multitude of
techniques for dealing with them within the context of artificial neural
networks. We present a comprehensive survey of the field of neural-symbolic
integration, including a new classification of system according to their

EDRMS 101: the basics
This paper presents the basic concepts of an electronic document and records management system (EDRMS), i.e. the what, why, and how aspects of an EDRMS. It identifies the key business drivers for implementing an EDRMS. It also explains how an EDRMS differs from an EDMS and identifies the core functionalities of an EDRMS and discusses the different possible design views in an EDRMS. The key functional specifications that assist in the selection of EDRMS are highlighted. The article concludes with points for consideration by records managers and vendors on the future of EDRMS
Web Data Extraction, Applications and Techniques: A Survey
Web Data Extraction is an important problem that has been studied by means of
different scientific tools and in a broad range of applications. Many
approaches to extracting data from the Web have been designed to solve specific
problems and operate in ad-hoc domains. Other approaches, instead, heavily
reuse techniques and algorithms developed in the field of Information
Extraction.
This survey aims at providing a structured and comprehensive overview of the
literature in the field of Web Data Extraction. We provided a simple
classification framework in which existing Web Data Extraction applications are
grouped into two main classes, namely applications at the Enterprise level and
at the Social Web level. At the Enterprise level, Web Data Extraction
techniques emerge as a key tool to perform data analysis in Business and
Competitive Intelligence systems as well as for business process
re-engineering. At the Social Web level, Web Data Extraction techniques allow
to gather a large amount of structured data continuously generated and
disseminated by Web 2.0, Social Media and Online Social Network users and this
offers unprecedented opportunities to analyze human behavior at a very large
scale. We discuss also the potential of cross-fertilization, i.e., on the
possibility of re-using Web Data Extraction techniques originally designed to

Using HTML5 to Prevent Detection of Drive-by-Download Web Malware
The web is experiencing an explosive growth in the last years. New
technologies are introduced at a very fast-pace with the aim of narrowing the
gap between web-based applications and traditional desktop applications. The
results are web applications that look and feel almost like desktop
applications while retaining the advantages of being originated from the web.
However, these advancements come at a price. The same technologies used to
build responsive, pleasant and fully-featured web applications, can also be
used to write web malware able to escape detection systems. In this article we
present new obfuscation techniques, based on some of the features of the
upcoming HTML5 standard, which can be used to deceive malware detection
systems. The proposed techniques have been experimented on a reference set of
obfuscated malware. Our results show that the malware rewritten using our
obfuscation techniques go undetected while being analyzed by a large number of
detection systems. The same detection systems were able to correctly identify
the same malware in its original unobfuscated form. We also provide some hints
about how the existing malware detection systems can be modified in order to
