    Adaptive Resource Allocation Algorithms For Data And Energy Integrated Networks Supporting Internet of Things

    According to the forecast, there are around 2.1 billion IoT devices connected to the network by 2022. The rapidly increased IoT devices bring enormous pressure to the energy management work as most of them are battery-powered gadgets. What’s more, in some specific scenarios, the IoT nodes are fitted in some extreme environment. For example, a large-scale IoT pressure sensor system is deployed underneath the floor to detect people moving across the floor. A density-viscosity sensor is deployed inside the fermenting vat to discriminate variations in density and viscosity for monitoring the wine fermentation. A strain distribution wireless sensor for detecting the crack formation of the bridge is deployed underneath the bridge and attached near the welded part of the steel. It is difficult for people to have an access to the extreme environment. Hence, the energy management work, namely, replacing batteries for the rapidly increased IoT sensors in the extreme environment brings more challenges. In order to reduce the frequency of changing batteries, the thesis proposes a self-management Data and Energy Integrated Network (DEIN) system, which designs a stable and controllable ambient RF resource to charge the battery-less IoT wireless devices. It embraces an adaptive energy management mechanism for automatically maintaining the energy level of the battery-less IoT wireless devices, which always keeps the devices within a workable voltage range that is from 2.9 to 4.0 volts. Based on the DEIN system, RF energy transmission is achieved by transmitting the designed packets with enhanced transmission power. However, it partly occupies the bandwidth which was only used for wireless information transmission. Hence, a scheduling cycle mechanism is proposed in the thesis for organizing the RF energy and wireless information transmission in separate time slots. In addition, a bandwidth allocation algorithm is proposed to minimize the bandwidth for RF energy transmission in order to maximize the throughput of wireless information. To harvest the RF energy, the RF-to-DC energy conversion is essential at the receiver side. According to the existing technologies, the hardware design of the RF-to-DC energy converter is normally realized by the voltage rectifier which is structured by multiple Schottky diodes and capacitors. Research proves that a maximum of 84% RF-to-DC conversion efficiency is obtained by comparing a variety of different wireless band for transmitting RF energy. Furthermore, there is energy loss in the air during transmitting the RF energy to the receiver. Moreover, the circuital loss happens when the harvested energy is utilized by electronic components. Hence, how to improve the efficiency of RF energy utilization is considered in the thesis. According to the scenario proposed in the thesis, the harvested energy is mainly consumed for uplink transmission. a resource allocation algorithm is proposed to minimize the system’s energy consumption per bit of uplink data. It works out the optimal transmission power for RF energy as well as the bandwidth allocated for RF energy and wireless information transmission. Referring to the existing RF energy transmission and harvesting application on the market, the Powercast uses the supercapacitor to preserve the harvested RF energy. Due to the lack of self-control energy management mechanism for the embedded sensor, the harvested energy is consumed quickly, and the system has to keep transmitting RF energy. Existing jobs have proposed energy-saving methods for IoT wireless devices such as how to put them in sleep mode and how to reduce transmission power. However,they are not adaptive, and that would be an issue for a practical application. In the thesis, an energy-saving algorithm is designed to adaptively manage the transmission power of the device for uplink data transmission. The algorithm balances the trade-off between the transmission power and the packet loss rate. It finds the optimal transmission power to minimize the average energy cost for uplink data transmission, which saves the harvested energy to reduce the frequency of RF energy transmission to free more bandwidth for wireless information

    Ultra-low power IoT applications: from transducers to wireless protocols

    This dissertation aims to explore Internet of Things (IoT) sensor nodes in various application scenarios with different design requirements. The research provides a comprehensive exploration of all the IoT layers composing an advanced device, from transducers to on-board processing, through low power hardware schemes and wireless protocols for wide area networks. Nowadays, spreading and massive utilization of wireless sensor nodes pushes research and industries to overcome the main limitations of such constrained devices, aiming to make them easily deployable at a lower cost. Significant challenges involve the battery lifetime that directly affects the device operativity and the wireless communication bandwidth. Factors that commonly contrast the system scalability and the energy per bit, as well as the maximum coverage. This thesis aims to serve as a reference and guideline document for future IoT projects, where results are structured following a conventional development pipeline. They usually consider communication standards and sensing as project requirements and low power operation as a necessity. A detailed overview of five leading IoT wireless protocols, together with custom solutions to overcome the throughput limitations and decrease the power consumption, are some of the topic discussed. Low power hardware engineering in multiple applications is also introduced, especially focusing on improving the trade-off between energy, functionality, and on-board processing capabilities. To enhance these features and to provide a bottom-top overview of an IoT sensor node, an innovative and low-cost transducer for structural health monitoring is presented. Lastly, the high-performance computing at the extreme edge of the IoT framework is addressed, with special attention to image processing algorithms running on state of the art RISC-V architecture. As a specific deployment scenario, an OpenCV-based stack, together with a convolutional neural network, is assessed on the octa-core PULP SoC

    Train Localisation using Wireless Sensor Networks

    Safety and reliability have always been concerns for railway transportation. Knowing the exact location of a train enables the railway system to react to an unusual situation for the safety of human lives and properties. Generally, the accuracy of localisation systems is related with their deployment and maintenance costs, which can be on the order of millions of dollars a year. Despite a lot of research efforts, existing localisation systems based on different technologies are still limited because most of them either require expensive infrastructure (ultrasound and laser), have high database maintenance, computational costs or accumulate errors (vision), offer limited coverage (GPS-dark regions, Wi-Fi, RFID) or provide low accuracy (audible sound). On the other hand, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) offer the potential for a cheap, reliable and accurate solutions for the train localisation system. This thesis proposes a WSN-based train localisation system, in which train location is estimated based on the information gathered through the communication between the anchor sensors deployed along the track and the gateway sensor installed on the train, such as anchor sensors' geographic coordinates and the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). In the proposed system, timely anchor-gateway communication implies accurate localisation. How to guarantee effective communication between anchor sensors along the track and the gateway sensor on the train is a challenging problem for WSN-based train localisation. I propose a beacon driven sensors wake-up scheme (BWS) to address this problem. BWS allows each anchor sensor to run an asynchronous duty-cycling protocol to conserve energy and establishes an upper bound on the sleep time in one duty cycle to guarantee their timely wake-up once a train approaches. Simulation results show that the BWS scheme can timely wake up the anchor sensors at a very low energy consumption cost. To design an accurate scheme for train localisation, I conducted on-site experiments in an open field, a railway station and a tunnel, and the results show that RSSI can be used as an estimator for train localisation and its applicability increases with the incorporation of another type of data such as location information of anchor sensors. By combining the advantages of RSSI-based distance estimation and Particle Filtering techniques, I designed a Particle-Filter-based train localisation scheme and propose a novel Weighted RSSI Likelihood Function (WRLF) for particle update. The proposed localisation scheme is evaluated through extensive simulations using the data obtained from the on-site measurements. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve significant accuracy, where average localisation error stays under 30 cm at the train speed of 40 m=s, 40% anchor sensors failure rate and sparse deployment. In addition, the proposed train localisation scheme is robust to changes in train speed, the deployment density and reliability of anchor sensors. Anchor sensors are prone to hardware and software deterioration such as battery outage and dislocation. Therefore, in order to reduce the negative impacts of these problems, I designed a novel Consensus-based Anchor sensor Management Scheme (CAMS), in which each anchor sensor performs a self-diagnostics and reports the detected faults in the neighbourhood. CAMS can assist the gateway sensor to exclude the input from the faulty anchor sensors. In CAMS, anchor sensors update each other about their opinions on other neighbours and develops consensus to mark faulty sensors. In addition, CAMS also reports the system information such as signal path loss ratio and allows anchor sensors to re-calibrate and verify their geographic coordinates. CAMS is evaluated through extensive simulations based on real data collected from field experiments. This evaluation also incorporated the simulated node failure model in simulations. Though there are no existing WSN-based train localisation systems available to directly compare our results with, the proposed schemes are evaluated with real datasets, theoretical models and existing work wherever it was possible. Overall, the WSN-based train localisation system enables the use of RSSI, with combination of location coordinates of anchor sensors, as location estimator. Due to low cost of sensor devices, the cost of overall system remains low. Further, with duty-cycling operation, energy of the sensor nodes and system is conserved

    Application of cognitive radio based sensor network in smart grids for efficient, holistic monitoring and control.

University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.This thesis is directed towards the application of cognitive radio based sensor network (CRSN) in smart grid (SG) for efficient, holistic monitoring and control. The work involves enabling of sensor network and wireless communication devices for spectra utilization via the capability of Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) of a cognitive radio (CR) as well as end to end communication access technology for unified monitoring and control in smart grids. Smart Grid (SG) is a new power grid paradigm that can provide predictive information and recommendations to utilities, including their suppliers, and their customers on how best to manage power delivery and consumption. SG can greatly reduce air pollution from our surrounding by renewable power sources such as wind energy, solar plants and huge hydro stations. SG also reduces electricity blackouts and surges. Communication network is the foundation for modern SG. Implementing an improved communication solution will help in addressing the problems of the existing SG. Hence, this study proposed and implemented improved CRSN model which will help to ultimately evade the inherent problems of communication network in the SG such as: energy inefficiency, interference, spectrum inefficiencies, poor quality of service (QoS), latency and throughput. To overcome these problems, the existing approach which is more predominant is the use of wireless sensor network (WSNs) for communication needs in SG. However, WSNs have low battery power, low computational complexity, low bandwidth support, and high latency or delay due to multihop transmission in existing WSN topology. Consequently, solving these problems by addressing energy efficiency, bandwidth or throughput, and latency have not been fully realized due to the limitations in the WSN and the existing network topology. Therefore, existing approach has not fully addressed the communication needs in SG. SG can be fully realized by integrating communication network technologies infrastructures into the power grid. Cognitive Radio-based Sensor Network (CRSN) is considered a feasible solution to enhance various aspects of the electric power grid such as communication with end and remote devices in real-time manner for efficient monitoring and to realize maximum benefits of a smart grid system. CRSN in SG is aimed at addressing the problem of spectrum inefficiency and interference which wireless sensor network (WSN) could not. However, numerous challenges for CRSNs are due to the harsh environmental wireless condition in a smart grid system. As a result, latency, throughput and reliability become critical issues. To overcome these challenges, lots of approaches can be adopted ranging from integration of CRSNs into SGs; proper implementation design model for SG; reliable communication access devices for SG; key immunity requirements for communication infrastructure in SG; up to communication network protocol optimization and so on. To this end, this study utilized the National Institute of Standard (NIST) framework for SG interoperability in the design of unified communication network architecture including implementation model for guaranteed quality of service (QoS) of smart grid applications. This involves virtualized network in form of multi-homing comprising low power wide area network (LPWAN) devices such as LTE CAT1/LTE-M, and TV white space band device (TVBD). Simulation and analysis show that the performance of the developed modules architecture outperforms the legacy wireless systems in terms of latency, blocking probability, and throughput in SG harsh environmental condition. In addition, the problem of multi correlation fading channels due to multi antenna channels of the sensor nodes in CRSN based SG has been addressed by the performance analysis of a moment generating function (MGF) based M-QAM error probability over Nakagami-q dual correlated fading channels with maximum ratio combiner (MRC) receiver technique which includes derivation and novel algorithmic approach. The results of the MATLAB simulation are provided as a guide for sensor node deployment in order to avoid the problem of multi correlation in CRSN based SGs. SGs application requires reliable and efficient communication with low latency in timely manner as well as adequate topology of sensor nodes deployment for guaranteed QoS. Another important requirement is the need for an optimized protocol/algorithms for energy efficiency and cross layer spectrum aware made possible for opportunistic spectrum access in the CRSN nodes. Consequently, an optimized cross layer interaction of the physical and MAC layer protocols using various novel algorithms and techniques was developed. This includes a novel energy efficient distributed heterogeneous clustered spectrum aware (EDHC- SA) multichannel sensing signal model with novel algorithm called Equilateral triangulation algorithm for guaranteed network connectivity in CRSN based SG. The simulation results further obtained confirm that EDHC-SA CRSN model outperforms conventional ZigBee WSN in terms of bit error rate (BER), end-to-end delay (latency) and energy consumption.
