Frequency-Aware Model Predictive Control
Transferring solutions found by trajectory optimization to robotic hardware
remains a challenging task. When the optimization fully exploits the provided
model to perform dynamic tasks, the presence of unmodeled dynamics renders the
motion infeasible on the real system. Model errors can be a result of model
simplifications, but also naturally arise when deploying the robot in
unstructured and nondeterministic environments. Predominantly, compliant
contacts and actuator dynamics lead to bandwidth limitations. While classical
control methods provide tools to synthesize controllers that are robust to a
class of model errors, such a notion is missing in modern trajectory
optimization, which is solved in the time domain. We propose frequency-shaped
cost functions to achieve robust solutions in the context of optimal control
for legged robots. Through simulation and hardware experiments we show that
motion plans can be made compatible with bandwidth limits set by actuators and
contact dynamics. The smoothness of the model predictive solutions can be
continuously tuned without compromising the feasibility of the problem.
Experiments with the quadrupedal robot ANYmal, which is driven by
highly-compliant series elastic actuators, showed significantly improved
tracking performance of the planned motion, torque, and force trajectories and
enabled the machine to walk robustly on terrain with unmodeled compliance

Performance and manufacturing considerations for series elastic actuators
Robots are becoming an integral part of our lives. We are already physically connected with them through many robotic applications such as exoskeletons in military, orthosis devices in health care, collaborative robots in industry, etc. While the integration of robots improves the quality of human life, it still poses a safety concern during the physical human-robot interaction. Series Elastic Actuators (SEAs) play an important role in improving the safety of human-robot interaction and collaboration. Considering the fast expansion of robotic applications in our lives and the safety benefits of SEAs, it is conceivable that SEAs are going to play an important role in robotic applications in every aspect of human life. This dissertation focuses on reducing the cost, simplifying the use and improving the performance of SEAs. The first research focus in this dissertation is to reduce the cost of SEAs. Robots are successful in reducing production and service costs when used but the capital cost of robot installations are very high. As robotics research shifts to safe robotic applications, reducing the cost of SEAs will greatly help to deploy this technology in more robotic applications and to increase their accessibility to a broader range of researchers and educators. With this motivation, I present a case study on reducing the cost of a SEA while maintaining high force and position control performance and industrial grade service life. The second research focus in this dissertation is to simplify the laborious gain selection process of the cascaded controllers of SEAs. In order to simplify the gain selection process of the impedance controllers of SEAs, an optimal feedback gain selection methodology was developed. Using this method, the feedback gains of the cascaded PD-type impedance controllers of SEAs can easily be calibrated. The developed method allows the users to find the highest feedback gains for a desired phase-margin. Beyond the low-cost realization and simple controller tuning of SEAs, performance improvements on SEAs are possible utilizing the series elasticity in these actuators. As the third research focus in this dissertation, a sequential convex optimization-based motion planning technique is developed in order to improve the joint velocity capabilities of SEAs with nonlinearities. A Series-Elastic Robot for Back-Pain Rehabilitation
Robotics research has been broadly expanding into various fields during the past decades. It is widely spread and best known for solving many technical necessities in different fields. With the rise of the industrial revolution, it upgraded many factories to use industrial robots to prevent the human operator from dangerous and hazardous tasks. The rapid development of application fields and their complexity have inspired researchers in the robotics community to find innovative solutions to meet the new desired requirements of the field. Currently, the creation of new needs outside the traditional industrial robots are demanding robots to attend to the new market and to assist humans in meeting their daily social needs (i.e., agriculture, construction, cleaning.). The future integration of robots into other types of production processes, added new requirements that require more safety, flexibility, and intelligence in robots. Areas of robotics has evolved into various fields. This dissertation addresses robotics research in four different areas: rehabilitation robots, biologically inspired robots, optimization techniques, and neural network implementation. Towards a safe and responsive control framework for human-centered robots
Human-centered robots are a specific kind of service robot, which interact with humans physically or cognitively and help humans with tasks in uncertain environments. They can be humanoid robots, exoskeletons, or manipulators and mobile platforms that provide us good services. However, human-centered robots are still not perfect enough for us to use nowadays. On the one hand, human-centered robots are still slow and inefficient for their tasks because the human inputs and dynamics that they react to are uncertain, immeasurable, or even completely unknown. On the other hand, human-centered robots face much more complicated safety requirements than other kinds of robots because humans are dynamic and vulnerable during physical human-robot interaction. To resolve these issues of human-centered robots, the work in this dissertation explores new models for reducing human uncertainty and new control algorithms for improving safety warranty.
The first half of this dissertation introduces a complex stiffness model for describing the uncertain human impedance. The discovery of this new model is motivated to explain the observation of a consistent damping ratio of a human versus different environmental dynamics. It replaces the linear damping term in a conventional mass-spring-damping model with a hysteretic damping term, an imaginary value in the frequency domain. Because of the correlation between the stiffness term and the newly discovered hysteretic damping term in the complex stiffness model, we can significantly reduce the human impedance uncertainty. Based on the complex stiffness model, we can adopt nonlinear control strategies for improving the responsiveness and the human-friendliness of human-centered robots.
The second half of this dissertation introduces the concept of a barrier pair, which consists of a barrier function and a controller for the safety verification and warranty of a human-centered robot. We obtain a barrier pair by solving an optimization problem subject to a series of linear matrix inequalities representing the state-space, input, and stability constraints of a human-centered robot. By incorporating sampling-based methods into the synthesis of barrier pairs, human-centered robots can guarantee safe operation with non-convex state-space constraints. The sampling-based barrier pair method helps us construct a control framework of human-robot shared autonomy. Planning and Control Strategies for Motion and Interaction of the Humanoid Robot COMAN+
Despite the majority of robotic platforms are still confined in controlled environments such as factories, thanks to the ever-increasing level of autonomy and the progress on human-robot interaction, robots are starting to be employed for different operations, expanding their focus from uniquely industrial to more diversified scenarios.
Humanoid research seeks to obtain the versatility and dexterity of robots capable of mimicking human motion in any environment. With the aim of operating side-to-side with humans, they should be able to carry out complex tasks without posing a threat during operations.
In this regard, locomotion, physical interaction with the environment and safety are three essential skills to develop for a biped.
Concerning the higher behavioural level of a humanoid, this thesis addresses both ad-hoc movements generated for specific physical interaction tasks and cyclic movements for locomotion. While belonging to the same category and sharing some of the theoretical obstacles, these actions require different approaches: a general high-level task is composed of specific movements that depend on the environment and the nature of the task itself, while regular locomotion involves the generation of periodic trajectories of the limbs.
Separate planning and control architectures targeting these aspects of biped motion are designed and developed both from a theoretical and a practical standpoint, demonstrating their efficacy on the new humanoid robot COMAN+, built at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia.
The problem of interaction has been tackled by mimicking the intrinsic elasticity of human muscles, integrating active compliant controllers. However, while state-of-the-art robots may be endowed with compliant architectures, not many can withstand potential system failures that could compromise the safety of a human interacting with the robot. This thesis proposes an implementation of such low-level controller that guarantees a fail-safe behaviour, removing the threat that a humanoid robot could pose if a system failure occurred

PHOTOTHERMAL AND PHOTOCHEMICAL STRATEGIES FOR LIGHTINDUCED SHAPE-MORPHING OF SOFT MATERIALS
Engineering materials with the capability to transform energy from photons into mechanical work is an outstanding technical challenge with implications across myriad disciplines. Despite decades of work in this area, comprehensive understanding of how to prescribe shape change and work output in photoactive systems remains limited. To this end, this dissertation explores strategies to assemble photothermal and photochemical moieties in soft material systems to fabricate photoaddressable devices capable of specific shape changes upon illumination. Chapters 2 and 3 describe a methodology for spatially patterning plasmonic nanoparticles in liquid crystal elastomer fibers and sheets to specify local photothermally-induced strain profiles. Using this platform, devices capable of deployment into specific 3D configurations in response to both waveguided light and flood illumination are demonstrated. Next, to circumvent the inherent limitation of approaches based on photothermal effects, two new strategies for shape programming azobenzene-containing materials are explored for athermal photoactuation. In Chapter 4, a new material platform is presented that uses azobenzene incorporated into the backbone of polymers to modulate crystallinity on-demand via photoisomerization for next-generation shape memory systems. Next, host-guest cyclodextrin-azobenzene systems are shown in Chapter 5 to enable robust, re-programmable shape changes in hydrogels. Lastly, in Chapter 6 an outlook for the future of the field and an identification of areas in need of further study are presented
Locomotion system for ground mobile robots in uneven and unstructured environments
One of the technology domains with the greatest growth rates nowadays is service robots. The extensive use of ground mobile robots in environments that are unstructured or structured for humans is a promising challenge for the coming years, even though Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) moving on flat and compact grounds are already commercially available and widely utilized to move components and products inside indoor industrial buildings. Agriculture, planetary exploration, military operations, demining, intervention in case of terrorist attacks, surveillance, and reconnaissance in hazardous conditions are important application domains.
Due to the fact that it integrates the disciplines of locomotion, vision, cognition, and navigation, the design of a ground mobile robot is extremely interdisciplinary. In terms of mechanics, ground mobile robots, with the exception of those designed for particular surroundings and surfaces (such as slithering or sticky robots), can move on wheels (W), legs (L), tracks (T), or hybrids of these concepts (LW, LT, WT, LWT). In terms of maximum speed, obstacle crossing ability, step/stair climbing ability, slope climbing ability, walking capability on soft terrain, walking capability on uneven terrain, energy efficiency, mechanical complexity, control complexity, and technology readiness, a systematic comparison of these locomotion systems is provided in [1].
Based on the above-mentioned classification, in this thesis, we first introduce a small-scale hybrid locomotion robot for surveillance and inspection, WheTLHLoc, with two tracks, two revolving legs, two active wheels, and two passive omni wheels. The robot can move in several different ways, including using wheels on the flat, compact ground,[1] tracks on soft, yielding terrain, and a combination of tracks, legs, and wheels to navigate obstacles. In particular, static stability and non-slipping characteristics are considered while analyzing the process of climbing steps and stairs. The experimental test on the first prototype has proven the planned climbing maneuver’s efficacy and the WheTLHLoc robot's operational flexibility. Later we present another development of WheTLHLoc and introduce WheTLHLoc 2.0 with newly designed legs, enabling the robot to deal with bigger obstacles.
Subsequently, a single-track bio-inspired ground mobile robot's conceptual and embodiment designs are presented. This robot is called SnakeTrack. It is designed for surveillance and inspection activities in unstructured environments with constrained areas. The vertebral column has two end modules and a variable number of vertebrae linked by compliant joints, and the surrounding track is its essential component. Four motors drive the robot: two control the track motion and two regulate the lateral flexion of the vertebral column for steering. The compliant joints enable limited passive torsion and retroflection of the vertebral column, which the robot can use to adapt to uneven terrain and increase traction. Eventually, the new version of SnakeTrack, called 'Porcospino', is introduced with the aim of allowing the robot to move in a wider variety of terrains.
The novelty of this thesis lies in the development and presentation of three novel designs of small-scale mobile robots for surveillance and inspection in unstructured environments, and they employ hybrid locomotion systems that allow them to traverse a variety of terrains, including soft, yielding terrain and high obstacles.
This thesis contributes to the field of mobile robotics by introducing new design concepts for hybrid locomotion systems that enable robots to navigate challenging environments. The robots presented in this thesis employ modular designs that allow their lengths to be adapted to suit specific tasks, and they are capable of restoring their correct position after falling over, making them highly adaptable and versatile.
Furthermore, this thesis presents a detailed analysis of the robots' capabilities, including their step-climbing and motion planning abilities. In this thesis we also discuss possible refinements for the robots' designs to improve their performance and reliability.
Overall, this thesis's contributions lie in the design and development of innovative mobile robots that address the challenges of surveillance and inspection in unstructured environments, and the analysis and evaluation of these robots' capabilities. The research presented in this thesis provides a foundation for further work in this field, and it may be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the areas of robotics, automation, and inspection.
As a general note, the first robot, WheTLHLoc, is a hybrid locomotion robot capable of combining tracked locomotion on soft terrains, wheeled locomotion on flat and compact grounds, and high obstacle crossing capability. The second robot, SnakeTrack, is a small-size mono-track robot with a modular structure composed of a vertebral column and a single peripherical track revolving around it. The third robot, Porcospino, is an evolution of SnakeTrack and includes flexible spines on the track modules for improved traction on uneven but firm terrains, and refinements of the shape of the track guidance system. This thesis provides detailed descriptions of the design and prototyping of these robots and presents analytical and experimental results to verify their capabilities
