Recent Achievements in Numerical Simulation in Sheet Metal Forming Processes
Purpose of this paper: During the recent 10-15 years, Computer Aided Process Planning and Die Design evolved as one of the most
important engineering tools in sheet metal forming, particularly in the automotive industry. This emerging role is strongly emphasized by
the rapid development of Finite Element Modelling, as well. The purpose of this paper is to give a general overview about the recent
achievements in this very important field of sheet metal forming and to introduce some special results in this development activity.
Design/methodology/approach: Concerning the CAE activities in sheet metal forming, there are two main approaches: one of them may
be regarded as knowledge based process planning, whilst the other as simulation based process planning. The author attempts to integrate
these two separate developments in knowledge and simulation based approach by linking commercial CAD and FEM systems.
Findings: Applying the above approach a more powerful and efficient process planning and die design solution can be achieved radically
reducing the time and cost of product development cycle and improving product quality.
Research limitations: Due to the different modelling approaches in CAD and FEM systems, the biggest challenge is to enhance the
robustness of data exchange capabilities between various systems to provide an even more streamlined information flow.
Practical implications: The proposed integrated solutions have great practical importance to improve the global competitiveness of sheet
metal forming in the very important segment of industry.
Originality/value: The concept described in this paper may have specific value both for process planning and die design engineers
Software cost estimation
The paper gives an overview of the state of the art of software cost estimation (SCE). The main questions to be answered in the paper are: (1) What are the reasons for overruns of budgets and planned durations? (2) What are the prerequisites for estimating? (3) How can software development effort be estimated? (4) What can software project management expect from SCE models, how accurate are estimations which are made using these kind of models, and what are the pros and cons of cost estimation models

A computer-based product classification and component detection for demanufacturing processes
This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in International Journal of Computer Integrated
Manufacturing, 24(10), 900-914, 2011 [copyright Taylor & Francis], available online at:
http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/0951192X.2011.579169.The aim of this paper is to propose a novel computer-based product classification, component detection and tracking for demanufacturing and disassembly process. This is achieved by introducing a series of automated and sequential product scanning, component identification, image analysis and sorting – leading to the development of a bill of material (BOM). The produced BOM can then be associated with the relevant disassembly/demanufacture proviso. The proposed integrated image sorting and product classification (ISPC) approach can be considered as a step forward in automation of demanufacturing activities. The ISPC model proposed in this paper utilises and builds on the state-of-the-art technology and current body of research in computer-integrated demanufacturing and remanufacturing (CIDR). An appraisal of the latest research material and the factors that inhibit CIDR methods inpractice are presented. A novel solution for the integration of imaging and material identification techniques toovercome some of the existing shortcomings of automated recycling processes is proposed in this paper. The proposed product scanning and component detection ISPC software consists of four distinct models: the repertory database, the search engine, the product-attributes updater and the image sorting and classification algorithm. The software framework that integrates the four components is presented in this paper. Finally, an overall assessment of applying ISPC at various stages of CIDR processes concludes the article.University of Ibadan MacArthur Foundation Gran
AI and OR in management of operations: history and trends
The last decade has seen a considerable growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for operations management with the aim of finding solutions to problems that are increasing in complexity and scale. This paper begins by setting the context for the survey through a historical perspective of OR and AI. An extensive survey of applications of AI techniques for operations management, covering a total of over 1200 papers published from 1995 to 2004 is then presented. The survey utilizes Elsevier's ScienceDirect database as a source. Hence, the survey may not cover all the relevant journals but includes a sufficiently wide range of publications to make it representative of the research in the field. The papers are categorized into four areas of operations management: (a) design, (b) scheduling, (c) process planning and control and (d) quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis. Each of the four areas is categorized in terms of the AI techniques used: genetic algorithms, case-based reasoning, knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic and hybrid techniques. The trends over the last decade are identified, discussed with respect to expected trends and directions for future work suggested
Innovation and failure in mechatronics design education
Innovative engineering design always has associated with it the risk of failure, and it is the role of the design engineer to mitigate the possibilities of failure in the final system. Education should however provide a safe space for students to both innovate and to learn about and from failures. However, pressures on course designers and students can result in their adopting a conservative, and risk averse, approach to problem solving. The paper therefore considers the nature of both innovation and failure, and looks at how these might be effectively combined within mechatronics design education
