A Framework for Exploring and Evaluating Mechanics in Human Computation Games
Human computation games (HCGs) are a crowdsourcing approach to solving
computationally-intractable tasks using games. In this paper, we describe the
need for generalizable HCG design knowledge that accommodates the needs of both
players and tasks. We propose a formal representation of the mechanics in HCGs,
providing a structural breakdown to visualize, compare, and explore the space
of HCG mechanics. We present a methodology based on small-scale design
experiments using fixed tasks while varying game elements to observe effects on
both the player experience and the human computation task completion. Finally
we discuss applications of our framework using comparisons of prior HCGs and
recent design experiments. Ultimately, we wish to enable easier exploration and
development of HCGs, helping these games provide meaningful player experiences

Post-Turing Methodology: Breaking the Wall on the Way to Artificial General Intelligence
This article offers comprehensive criticism of the Turing test and develops quality criteria for new artificial general intelligence (AGI) assessment tests. It is shown that the prerequisites A. Turing drew upon when reducing personality and human consciousness to “suitable branches of thought” re-flected the engineering level of his time. In fact, the Turing “imitation game” employed only symbolic communication and ignored the physical world. This paper suggests that by restricting thinking ability to symbolic systems alone Turing unknowingly constructed “the wall” that excludes any possi-bility of transition from a complex observable phenomenon to an abstract image or concept. It is, therefore, sensible to factor in new requirements for AI (artificial intelligence) maturity assessment when approaching the Tu-ring test. Such AI must support all forms of communication with a human being, and it should be able to comprehend abstract images and specify con-cepts as well as participate in social practices
SIMNET: simulation-based exercises for computer net-work curriculum through gamification and augmented reality
Gamification and Augmented Reality techniques, in recent years, have tackled many subjects and environments. Its implementation can, in particular, strengthen teaching and learning processes in schools and universities. Therefore, new forms of knowledge, based on interactions with objects, contributing game, experimentation and collaborative work. Through the technologies mentioned above, we intend to develop an application that serves as a didactic tool, giving support in the area of Computer Networks. This application aims to stand out in simulated controlled environments to create computer networks, taking into ac-count the necessary physical devices and the different physical and logical topologies. The main goal is to enrich the students’ learning experiences and contrib-ute to teacher-student interaction, through collaborative learning provided by the tool, minimizing the need for expensive equipment in learning environments.Universidad de Málaga. Key Steps in Developing a Cognitive Vaccine against Traumatic Flashbacks: Visuospatial Tetris versus Verbal Pub Quiz
Background: Flashbacks (intrusive memories of a traumatic event) are the hallmark feature of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, however preventative interventions are lacking. Tetris may offer a 'cognitive vaccine' [1] against flashback development after trauma exposure. We previously reported that playing the computer game Tetris soon after viewing traumatic material reduced flashbacks compared to no-task [1]. However, two criticisms need to be addressed for clinical translation: (1) Would all games have this effect via distraction/enjoyment, or might some games even be harmful? (2) Would effects be found if administered several hours post-trauma? Accordingly, we tested Tetris versus an alternative computer game - Pub Quiz - which we hypothesized not to be helpful (Experiments 1 and 2), and extended the intervention interval to 4 hours (Experiment 2).Methodology/Principal Findings: The trauma film paradigm was used as an experimental analog for flashback development in healthy volunteers. In both experiments, participants viewed traumatic film footage of death and injury before completing one of the following: (1) no-task control condition (2) Tetris or (3) Pub Quiz. Flashbacks were monitored for 1 week. Experiment 1: 30 min after the traumatic film, playing Tetris led to a significant reduction in flashbacks compared to no-task control, whereas Pub Quiz led to a significant increase in flashbacks. Experiment 2: 4 hours post-film, playing Tetris led to a significant reduction in flashbacks compared to no-task control, whereas Pub Quiz did not.Conclusions/Significance: First, computer games can have differential effects post-trauma, as predicted by a cognitive science formulation of trauma memory. In both Experiments, playing Tetris post-trauma film reduced flashbacks. Pub Quiz did not have this effect, even increasing flashbacks in Experiment 1. Thus not all computer games are beneficial or merely distracting post-trauma - some may be harmful. Second, the beneficial effects of Tetris are retained at 4 hours post-trauma. Clinically, this delivers a feasible time-window to administer a post-trauma "cognitive vaccine''
Dealing with abstraction: Case study generalisation as a method for eliciting design patterns
Developing a pattern language is a non-trivial problem. A critical requirement is a method to support pattern writers with abstraction, so as they can produce generalised patterns. In this paper, we address this issue by developing a structured process of generalisation. It is important that this process is initiated through engaging participants in identifying initial patterns, i.e. directly dealing with the 'cold-start' problem. We have found that short case study descriptions provide a productive 'way into' the process for participants. We reflect on a 1-year interdisciplinary pan-European research project involving the development of almost 30 cases and over 150 patterns. We provide example cases, detailing the process by which their associated patterns emerged. This was based on a foundation for generalisation from cases with common attributes. We discuss the merits of this approach and its implications for pattern development
Hacker Combat: A Competitive Sport from Programmatic Dueling & Cyberwarfare
The history of humanhood has included competitive activities of many
different forms. Sports have offered many benefits beyond that of
entertainment. At the time of this article, there exists not a competitive
ecosystem for cyber security beyond that of conventional capture the flag
competitions, and the like. This paper introduces a competitive framework with
a foundation on computer science, and hacking. This proposed competitive
landscape encompasses the ideas underlying information security, software
engineering, and cyber warfare. We also demonstrate the opportunity to rank,
score, & categorize actionable skill levels into tiers of capability.
Physiological metrics are analyzed from participants during gameplay. These
analyses provide support regarding the intricacies required for competitive
play, and analysis of play. We use these intricacies to build a case for an
organized competitive ecosystem. Using previous player behavior from gameplay,
we also demonstrate the generation of an artificial agent purposed with
gameplay at a competitive level
Evaluation of optimisation techniques for multiscopic rendering
A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science by ResearchThis project evaluates different performance optimisation techniques applied to stereoscopic and multiscopic rendering for interactive applications. The artefact
features a robust plug-in package for the Unity game engine. The thesis provides background information for the performance optimisations, outlines all the findings, evaluates the optimisations and provides suggestions for future work.
Scrum development methodology is used to develop the artefact and quantitative research methodology is used to evaluate the findings by measuring performance.
This project concludes that the use of each performance optimisation has specific use case scenarios in which performance benefits. Foveated rendering provides
greatest performance increase for both stereoscopic and multiscopic rendering but is also more computationally intensive as it requires an eye tracking solution.
Dynamic resolution is very beneficial when overall frame rate smoothness is needed and frame drops are present. Depth optimisation is beneficial for vast open environments but can lead to decreased performance if used inappropriately
