Specialised pest and disease control in the agricultural crops industry have been a high-priority issue. Due to great cost-effectiveness and efficient automation, computer vision (CV)–based automatic pest or disease identification techniques are widely utilised in the smart agricultural systems. As rapid development of artificial intelligence, in the field of computer vision–based agricultural pest identification, an increasing number of scholars have begun to move their attentions from traditional machine learning models to deep learning techniques. However, so far, deep learning techniques still have been suffering from many problems such as limited data samples, cost-effectiveness of network structure, and high image quality requirements. These issues greatly limit the potential utilisation of deep-learning techniques into smart agricultural systems. This paper aims at investigating utilization of one new deep-learning model WRN (wide residual networks) into CV-based automatic disease identification problem. We first built up a large-scale agricultural disease images dataset containing over 36,000 pieces of diseases, which includes typical types of disease in tomato, potato, grape, corn and apple. Then, we analysed and evaluated wide residual networks algorithm using the Tesla K80 graphics processor (GPU) in the TensorFlow deep-learning framework. A set of comprehensive experimental protocols have been designed in comparing with GoogLeNet Inception V4 regarding several benchmarks. The experimental results indicate that (1) under WRN architecture, Softmax loss function gives a faster convergence and improved accuracy than GoogLeNet inception V4 network. (2) While WRN shows a good effect for identification of agricultural diseases, its effectiveness has a strong need on the number of training samples of dataset like at least 36 k images in our experiment. (3) The overall performance is better than 800 sheets. The disease identification results show that the WRN model can be applied to the identification of agricultural diseases

The world population growth is increasing the demand for food production. Furthermore, the reduction of the workforce in rural areas and the increase in production costs are challenges for food production nowadays. Smart farming is a farm management concept that may use Internet of Things (IoT) to overcome the current challenges of food production This work presents a systematic review of the existing literature on smart farming with IoT. The systematic review reveals an evolution in the way data are processed by IoT solutions in recent years. Traditional approaches mostly used data in a reactive manner. In contrast, recent approaches allowed the use of data to prevent crop problems and to improve the accuracy of crop diagnosis. Based on the finds of the systematic review, this work proposes an architecture of an IoT solution that enables monitoring and management of crops in real time. The proposed architecture allows the usage of big data and machine learning to process the collected data. A prototype is implemented to validate the operation of the proposed architecture and a security risk assessment of the implemented prototype is carried out. The implemented prototype successfully validates the proposed architecture. The architecture presented in this work allows the implementation of IoT solutions in different scenarios of farming, such as indoor and outdoor

Smart Farming (SF) is an emerging technology in the current agricultural landscape. The aim of Smart Farming is to provide tools for various agricultural and farming operations to improve yield by reducing cost, waste, and required manpower. SF is a data-driven approach that can mitigate losses that occur due to extreme weather conditions and calamities. The influx of data from various sensors, and the introduction of information communication technologies (ICTs) in the field of farming has accelerated the implementation of disruptive technologies (DTs) such as machine learning and big data. Application of these predictive and innovative tools in agriculture is crucial for handling unprecedented conditions such as climate change and the increasing global population. In this study, we review the recent advancements in the field of Smart Farming, which include novel use cases and projects around the globe. An overview of the challenges associated with the adoption of such technologies in their respective regions is also provided. A brief analysis of the general sentiment towards Smart Farming technologies is also performed by manually annotating YouTube comments and making use of the pattern library. Preliminary findings of our study indicate that, though there are several barriers to the implementation of SF tools, further research and innovation can alleviate such risks and ensure sustainability of the food supply. The exploratory sentiment analysis also suggests that most digital users are not well-informed about such technologies

The rapid development of internet, cloud computing and sensor networks lead to develop and deploy the Internet of Things (IoT) which is a hot topic for the researchers. It has started to be used in various areas. Thus, agriculture is one of the most popular IoT research area. In agriculture environment, farming platform area is being a huge open structure and farmers must protect the crops from extreme weather conditions namely; wind speed/direction, precipitation, air temperature, solar radiations, and relative humidity etc. These extreme weather conditions effect crops and farms very significantly. But with the benefits of Internet of Things technologies, an agriculture business become more easy and efficient despite extreme weather conditions. This paper provides a model of smart agriculture environment using neural networks that helps the farmers to make more accurate predictions for the future according to weather conditions. This paper proposed a time-delay radial basis function (TDRBF) network approach to model temporal and sequential relationship between the various weather condition sensor readings from the agricultural environment. The performance of the acquired network model was analysed statistically and presented in this paper. As a result, the results of the neural network model show that it could be used to predict the desired weather condition sensor readings beforehand in order to increase the productivity in agricultural environment and also it is possible that by using such an intelligent learning system could provide a life-long learning for the changing weather conditions in the farming area over the years

Foundation Models in Smart Agriculture: Basics, Opportunities, and Challenges

The past decade has witnessed the rapid development of ML and DL methodologies in agricultural systems, showcased by great successes in variety of agricultural applications. However, these conventional ML/DL models have certain limitations: They heavily rely on large, costly-to-acquire labeled datasets for training, require specialized expertise for development and maintenance, and are mostly tailored for specific tasks, thus lacking generalizability. Recently, foundation models have demonstrated remarkable successes in language and vision tasks across various domains. These models are trained on a vast amount of data from multiple domains and modalities. Once trained, they can accomplish versatile tasks with just minor fine-tuning and minimal task-specific labeled data. Despite their proven effectiveness and huge potential, there has been little exploration of applying FMs to agriculture fields. Therefore, this study aims to explore the potential of FMs in the field of smart agriculture. In particular, we present conceptual tools and technical background to facilitate the understanding of the problem space and uncover new research directions in this field. To this end, we first review recent FMs in the general computer science domain and categorize them into four categories: language FMs, vision FMs, multimodal FMs, and reinforcement learning FMs. Subsequently, we outline the process of developing agriculture FMs and discuss their potential applications in smart agriculture. We also discuss the unique challenges associated with developing AFMs, including model training, validation, and deployment. Through this study, we contribute to the advancement of AI in agriculture by introducing AFMs as a promising paradigm that can significantly mitigate the reliance on extensive labeled datasets and enhance the efficiency, effectiveness, and generalization of agricultural AI systems.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure
