    Improved Third Order PID Sliding Mode Controller for Electrohydraulic Actuator Tracking Control

    An electrohydraulic actuator (EHA) system is a combination of hydraulic systems and electrical systems which can produce a rapid response, high power-to-weight ratio, and large stiffness. Nevertheless, the EHA system has nonlinear behaviors and modeling uncertainties such as frictions, internal and external leakages, and parametric uncertainties, which lead to significant challenges in controller design for trajectory tracking. Therefore, this paper presents the design of an intelligent adaptive sliding mode proportional integral and derivative (SMCPID) controller, which is the main contribution toward the development of effective control on a third-order model of a double-acting EHA system for trajectory tracking, which significantly reduces chattering under noise disturbance. The sliding mode controller (SMC) is created by utilizing the exponential rule and the Lyapunov theorem to ensure closed-loop stability. The chattering in the SMC controller has been significantly decreased by substituting the modified sigmoid function for the signum function. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) was used to lower the total of absolute errors to adjust the controller. In order to demonstrate the efficacy of the SMCPID controller, the results for trajectory tracking and noise disturbance rejection were compared to those obtained using the proportional integral and derivative (PID), the proportional and derivative (PD), and the sliding mode proportional and derivative (SMCPD) controllers, respectively. In conclusion, the results of the extensive research given have indicated that the SMCPID controller outperforms the PD, PID, and SMCPD controllers in terms of overall performance.

    An active controls technology (ACT) system architecture was selected based on current technology system elements and optimal control theory was evaluated for use in analyzing and synthesizing ACT multiple control laws. The system selected employs three redundant computers to implement all of the ACT functions, four redundant smaller computers to implement the crucial pitch-augmented stability function, and a separate maintenance and display computer. The reliability objective of probability of crucial function failure of less than 1 x 10 to the -9th power per flight of 1 hr can be met with current technology system components, if the software is assumed fault free and coverage approaching 1.0 can be provided. The optimal control theory approach to ACT control law synthesis yielded comparable control law performance much more systematically and directly than the classical s-domain approach. The ACT control law performance, although somewhat degraded by the inclusion of representative nonlinearities, remained quite effective.     Design and simulation of a distortion masking control algorithm for a pneumatic cylinder

    Low energy efficiency is one of the main detractors of fluid power technology. To ensure the availability and sustainability of energy sources, fluid power technology needs to meet high energy-efficiency and cost standards. This study aims to design, simulate and test a control algorithm that attenuates the detrimental effects of air compressibility on the performance and efficiency of a pneumatic cylinder. The transmission of power over long distances makes it more difficult for fluid power technology to meet energy-efficiency and cost requirements. Transmitting power over long distances represents a challenge particularly for pneumatics due to the compressibility of air. The compressibility of air transmitted through lengthy tubing decreases the performance and efficiency of pneumatic actuators, mainly affecting their time response and velocity. The system under analysis was composed of a pneumatic cylinder, two proportional control valves, and connective tubing. The dynamics of the individual components were characterized through experimentation. Nonlinear and linear models for the system were validated through the comparison of simulated and experimental data. The models predicted the system behavior more accurately at 2.5 Hz, when friction effects became negligible, as compared to 1.0 and 0.5 Hz. A controller was designed using pole/zero cancellation, a control strategy able to mask undesirable dynamics of the system being controlled. Pole/zero cancellation had superior performance in the attenuation of air compressibility effects in comparison to proportional and proportional-derivative (PD) control. System performance and efficiency were assessed in terms of the variation of the length of tubing connecting the pneumatic cylinder and the control valves. Pole/zero cancellation enabled the cylinder to achieve similar levels of performance for long (3.0 m) tubing as with short (0.55 m) tubing. With a 1.0-Hz sinusoidal input and equal control gains, pole/zero cancellation reduced the tracking error by approximately 30% and 23% in comparison to proportional and PD control, respectively. In terms of efficiency, with the system tracking a 2.5-Hz sinusoidal command, and using equal control gains, pole/zero cancellation increased the cylinder efficiency by approximately 36% and 54% in comparison to proportional and PD control, respectively. In general, pole/zero cancellation increased the system performance and efficiency in comparison to the other control schemes applied

    Active variable geometry suspension for cars

    This thesis investigates the characteristics and performance of a new type of active suspension for cars through modelling, simulation, control design and experimental testing. The Series Active Variable Geometry Suspension (SAVGS) concept is first put in context by reviewing the history and current trends in automotive suspensions. Its potential is then critically evaluated and work is carried out to maximise its performance for various suspension functions. A multi-model multi-software modelling and simulation approach is followed throughout the thesis in order to cross-check and substantiate simulation results in the absence of experimental data. The simpler linear models are used to inform the selection of suitable parameter sets for the case studies, to synthesise control systems and to qualitatively validate the more complex, nonlinear multi-body models. The latter are developed as a platform to virtually test the system and its control algorithms. When possible, these tests are based on standard open-loop test manoeuvres and on standardised external disturbances. The SAVGS-retrofitted suspension displays a very nonlinear behaviour, which is at the same time a liability and an opportunity from the point of view of control. Nevertheless, different linear control techniques are effectively applied to improve various suspension functions: PIDs are applied to the lower frequency suspension functions such as mitigation of chassis attitude motions, and the H∞ framework is applied to the higher frequency suspension functions such as comfort and road holding enhancement. In all cases, a cascade control approach is employed, and mechanisms are implemented to ensure that physical and design actuator constraints are always respected. This thesis also covers the design and construction of a quarter-car experimental test rig facility. Step-by-step recommendations for its refinement as well as a testing plan are also outlined.Open Acces
