Pitfalls of Agent-Oriented Development
While the theoretical and experimental foundations of agent-based systems are becoming increasingly well understood, comparatively little effort has been devoted to understanding the pragmatics of (multi-) agent systems development - the everyday reality of carrying out an agent-based development project. As a result, agent system developers are needlessly repeating the same mistakes, with the result that, at best, resources are wasted - at worst, projects fail. This paper identifies the main pitfalls that await the agent system developer, and where possible, makes tentative recommendations for how these pitfalls can be avoided or rectified
A range of memory possibilities: The challenge of the false memory debate for clinicians and researchers
The aim of this article is to present a succinct review and evaluation of the main areas of contention in the false memory debate and, from this basis, to suggest ways in which the best from both sides can be utilised. We examine the potential pitfalls of therapy in terms of the fallibility and suggestibility of autobiographical memory and therapists and therapeutic techniques as the architects of false memories. We then evaluate the case for false memory formation examining if some researchers hold misconceived views of psychotherapy, if experimental studies lack ecological validity, and the effect of trauma on memory. Finally, we explore how the potential pitfalls of therapy can be avoided in practice, reflecting on the usefulness of British Psychological Society guidelines, how clinicians can implement research findings, and how research on the false memory debate can be improved. We conclude that the way forward is researcher-clinician collaboration in the development of ecologically valid research paradigms
Experimental Philosophical Aesthetics as Public Philosophy
Experimental philosophy offers an alternative mode of engagement for public philosophy, in which the public can play a participatory role. We organized two public events on the aesthetics of coffee that explored this alternative mode of engagement. The first event focuses on issues surrounding the communication of taste. The second event focuses on issues concerning ethical influences on taste.
In this paper, we report back on these two events which explored the possibility of doing experimental philosophical aesthetics as public philosophy. We set the stage by considering the significance and current state of efforts in public philosophy, and by introducing the emerging sub-discipline of experimental philosophical aesthetics. Then, we discuss the research and outreach aspects of the two events on the aesthetics of coffee. Finally, we conclude by reflecting on the prospects and potential pitfalls of experimental philosophy as public philosophy
The optimism bias : a cognitive neuroscience perspective
The optimism bias is a well-established psychological phenomenon. Its study has implications that are far reaching in fields as diverse as mental health and economic theory. With the emerging field of cognitive neuroscience and the advent of advanced neuroimaging techniques, it has been possible to investigate the neural basis of the optimism bias and to understand in which neurological conditions this natural bias fails. This review first defines the optimism bias, discusses its implications and reviews the literature that investigates its neural basis. Finally some potential pitfalls in experimental design are discussed.peer-reviewe
Experimental phasing: best practice and pitfalls.
Developments in protein crystal structure determination by experimental phasing are reviewed, emphasizing the theoretical continuum between experimental phasing, density modification, model building and refinement. Traditional notions of the composition of the substructure and the best coefficients for map generation are discussed. Pitfalls such as determining the enantiomorph, identifying centrosymmetry (or pseudo-symmetry) in the substructure and crystal twinning are discussed in detail. An appendix introduces combined real-imaginary log-likelihood gradient map coefficients for SAD phasing and their use for substructure completion as implemented in the software Phaser. Supplementary material includes animated probabilistic Harker diagrams showing how maximum-likelihood-based phasing methods can be used to refine parameters in the case of SIR and MIR; it is hoped that these will be useful for those teaching best practice in experimental phasing methods
Detection of Vacuum Birefringence with Intense Laser Pulses
We propose a novel technique that promises hope of being the first to
directly detect a polarization in the quantum electrodynamic (QED) vacuum. The
technique is based upon the use of ultra-short pulses of light circulating in
low dispersion optical resonators. We show that the technique circumvents the
need for large scale liquid helium cooled magnets, and more importantly avoids
the experimental pitfalls that plague existing experiments that make use of
these magnets. Likely improvements in the performance of optics and lasers
would result in the ability to observe vacuum polarization in an experiment of

The operator product expansion does not imply parity doubling of hadrons
We examine whether the fact that QCD is chirally invariant at short distances
necessarily leads to the prediction that hadrons form approximate parity
doublets, as has been recently put forward by Glozman and collaborators. We
show that this is not the case, and we exhibit some of the pitfalls of trying
to link the operator product expansion to the hadron spectrum. We illustrate
our arguments within a model for scalar and pseudo-scalar mesons used recently
by Shifman to argue for parity doubling. We find that, whatever the
experimental situation may be, there is no theoretical basis for parity
doubling based on the use of the operator product expansion.Comment: 9 pages, Late
