Medication Reconciliation, Competency, Timely and Effective Care, and Hospital Readmissions

Hospital readmissions within 30 days of discharge result in significant multimillion-dollar penalties to thousands of Medicare-eligible hospitals throughout the United States and are indicators of suboptimal patient healthcare leading to less than ideal health outcomes for previously hospitalized patients. The purpose of this correlation study was to examine the relationship between medication reconciliation, nursing workforce competency, timely and effective care, and Medicare-eligible hospital 30-day readmission rates. The sample of 269 hospitals came from the population of Medicare-eligible hospitals throughout the United States. Complexity theory and the general model of readmission were theoretical frameworks grounding this study. Secondary data were from publicly available governmental databases. The reporting of the F statistic resulted in rejection of the null hypothesis in this study, based on evidence of the existence of a significant correlation between the variables. Findings shows a statistically significant relationship between nursing workforce competency, timely and effective care, and Medicare-eligible hospital 30-day readmission rates. Medication reconciliation, as measured in this study, was not a significant predictor of 30-day readmission rates. Implications of this study for positive social change include an understanding of factors related to hospital 30-day readmission rates to help leaders take action to enhance patient care, reduce inpatient care expenses, and decrease Medicare-imposed hospital penalties

The paper presents the concept of the Domain Translator (DT) and the example of its implementation for the purpose of web sites internationalization. The majority of Croatian web sites, especially in the domain of academic community, offer only their narrowed versions containing some general information in foreign languages. The users that do not speak Croatian try to cope with this problem by using translators like Google Translate, but only with a limited success, because of various problems, including the loss of local heritage like local names, shortcuts, and appropriate textual context. In the scope of this paper, a Domain Translator in a form of web browser extension was built, as well as the database of lexical artifacts covering an example of faculty web site. Given translations were compared with the corresponding results of the Google Translate and Bing Translator

A guide for the elaboration of new sustainable programs and policies for managing organic wastein Brazilian municipalities was developed. Analysis of government documents, the Brazilian Solid Waste Policy law and a literature review were conducted to identify the main factors influencing strategic planning of programs for municipal solid waste management systems. A framework presenting steps for planning programs was utilized as basis to conduct interviews with public servants and specialists. Findings about limitations, importance, feasibility and other considerations upon all steps were analysed, and grouped to produce practical recommendations applicable to the Brazilian context. The recommendations and suggested modifications to the original framework are presented in the form of a structured guide for planning sustainable programs and policies

    Get PDF
The rapid expansion and acceptance of social media has opened doors into users’ opinions and perceptions that were never as accessible as they are with today\u27s prevalence of mobile technology. Harvested data, analyzed for opinions and sentiment can provide powerful insight into a population. This research utilizes Twitter data due to its widespread global use, in order to examine the sentiment associated with tweets. An approach utilizing Twitter #hashtags and Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic modeling were utilized to differentiate between tweet topics. A lexicographical dictionary was then utilized to classify sentiment. This method provides a framework for an analyst to ingest Twitter data, conduct an analysis and provide insight into the sentiment contained within the data

Air Pollution Control Policy Options for Metro Manila

The Asian Development Bank has sponsored research on market-based instruments for managing pollution in Metro Manila, Philippines, where air quality is seriously degraded. This report offers three policy options for reducing particulate emissions and their precursors. For stationary sources, we recommend an emissions fee that creates efficient financial incentives to reduce emissions while raising revenues for monitoring and enforcement activities. For mobile sources, we propose a pilot diesel retrofit program using a low-cost technology that is effective at existing 2,000 ppm sulfur content. Second, we recommmend a charge on the sulfur content of diesel fuel to encourage meeting and surpassing the 500 ppm standard to allow for more advanced particulate trap technologies. Although better data are needed—both for designing controls and for evaluating their efficacy—much can be learned just by implementing these programs, so we make recommendations for starting points.air pollution, emissions tax, Philippines, particulates

Social media platforms such as Twitter play an essential role in politics and social movements nowadays. The aim of this paper is to compare and contrast the language used on Twitter to refer to the candidates of the last UK general election of December 2019 in order to raise awareness of gender inequality in politics. The methodology followed is based on three aspects: (a) a quantitative analysis using Sketch Engine to extract the main collocates from the corpus; (b) a sentiment analysis of the compiled tweets by means of two lexicon classifications: BING (Hu & Liu, 2004) and NRC (Mohammad & Turney, 2013), which classifies words into eight basic emotions and two sentiments (positive and negative); and (c) a qualitative analysis employing a Critical Discourse Analysis approach (Fairclough, 2013) to examine verbal abuse towards women from a linguistics perspective
