Reaching Out to Tribal Communities: Lessons Learned and Approaches to Consider
When transportation safety decision-making is desired, the involvement and engagement with a community is essential. A streamlined delivery of a project or program is more likely to occur when active dialogue and an exchange of ideas occurs in advance and occurs frequently. This is particularly important in tribal communities, who value sustained relationships and represent the focus population of this study. The research team, on six separate occasions, met with local and regional tribal leaders to explore and discuss transportation safety needs within and outside tribal communities, as well as discern the recommended approaches to foster ongoing dialogue about these needs. In all cases these discussions closely correlated with existing research studies or activities; transportation safety and equity is not seen as separate from other tribal foci and community needs. Specific recommendations to consider, in no particular order, included the following: invest respectfully enough time for people to talk; tribes think long-term and consider the impact of any decision from a long-term viewpoint so an iterative process and re-sharing of ideas is critical; the power of decision is in the hands of the tribe and its members; do not lump tribes together as each tribe is sovereign and unique and every community should be expected to think differently; all tribes are unique as is the environmental and social context; to disseminate information widely and iteratively, do so when there is a large group or event; be sure to understand the Tribal governance, decision making, and organizational structure; know who is the tribal Chairman or Chairwoman; and develop an emic and etic understanding of the community
Public Participation GIS for sustainable urban mobility planning: methods, applications and challenges
Sustainable mobility planning is a new approach to planning, and as such it requires new methods of public participation, data collection and data aggregation. In the article we present an overview of Public Participation GIS (PPGIS) methods with potential use in sustainable urban mobility planning. We present the methods using examples from two recent case studies conducted in Polish cities of PoznaĆ and ĆodĆș. Sustainable urban mobility planning is a cyclical process, and each stage has different data and participatory requirements. Consequently, we situate the PPGIS methods in appropriate stages of planning, based on potential benefits they may bring into the planning process. We discuss key issues related to participant recruitment and provide guidelines for planners interested in implementing methods presented in the paper. Training of Crisis Mappers and Map Production from Multi-sensor Data: Vernazza Case Study (Cinque Terre National Park, Italy)
This aim of paper is to presents the development of a multidisciplinary project carried out by the cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action). The goal of the project was the training in geospatial data acquiring and processing for students attending Architecture and Engineering Courses, in order to start up a team of "volunteer mappers". Indeed, the project is aimed to document the environmental and built heritage subject to disaster; the purpose is to improve the capabilities of the actors involved in the activities connected in geospatial data collection, integration and sharing. The proposed area for testing the training activities is the Cinque Terre National Park, registered in the World Heritage List since 1997. The area was affected by flood on the 25th of October 2011. According to other international experiences, the group is expected to be active after emergencies in order to upgrade maps, using data acquired by typical geomatic methods and techniques such as terrestrial and aerial Lidar, close-range and aerial photogrammetry, topographic and GNSS instruments etc.; or by non conventional systems and instruments such us UAV, mobile mapping etc. The ultimate goal is to implement a WebGIS platform to share all the data collected with local authorities and the Civil Protectio

Some of this is daily management, some of it
is work flows but the power of GIS is the central
power, the heart of GIS is really remarkable. Itâs
almost magical to me. So, Iâm sort of
rediscovering myself and emphasising to all of
GIS users all over the world to make better
maps. Maps are about telling a story. Many of
the maps that users make are maps that donât tell
a story. There are lines and dots and a text and
graphic display but they are not leveraging the
power of this communication language. So I
think of maps as a kind of language and we have
photographs and paintings â these are graphic
expressions of reality but a map is much more
powerful and we need to treat it as the power
that it has
Participatory GIS for growth management in the Cheat Lake planning district of Monongalia County, West Virginia
Participatory Geographic Information Systems (PGIS) can be an effective methodology for collecting public input in local land use planning and smart growth management. PGIS-based approaches provide residents with an opportunity to discuss and map their priority land use issues and to identify land use hotspots in a way that is not typically possible in a general public meeting. This thesis research explores how community qualitative information about land use can be incorporated into a PGIS for the Cheat Lake Planning District of Monongalia County, West Virginia. The research presented in this thesis demonstrates how qualitative information strengthens land use planning and improves communication about smart growth management options at the local level. Multimedia information, such as community narratives, mental maps, and geo-referenced photographs are collected using qualitative research methods and combined with existing geo-spatial information in order to shape future political discussions about land use planning in the case study area
Urban management revolution: intelligent management systems for ubiquitous cities
A successful urban management support system requires an integrated approach. This integration includes bringing together economic, socio-cultural and urban development with a well orchestrated transparent and open decision making mechanism. The paper emphasises the importance of integrated urban management to better tackle the climate change, and to achieve sustainable urban development and sound urban growth management. This paper introduces recent approaches on urban management systems, such as intelligent urban management systems, that are suitable for ubiquitous cities. The paper discusses the essential role of online collaborative decision making in urban and infrastructure planning, development and management, and advocates transparent, fully democratic and participatory mechanisms for an effective urban management system that is particularly suitable for ubiquitous cities. This paper also sheds light on some of the unclear processes of urban management of ubiquitous cities and online collaborative decision making, and reveals the key benefits of integrated and participatory mechanisms in successfully constructing sustainable ubiquitous cities

Transit proximity effects : Capital MetroRail and its impact on land prices in Austin, Texas
textSince its first operation in 2010, the 32-mile Austin Capital MetroRail has connected downtown Austin to the city of Leander with 9 stations operating in total. Currently, no research has investigated the impact of the Austin MetroRail on property values. This study fills the research gap by understanding its impacts on property values and other socio-economical influences. Hedonic models have been constructed to assess the effects of transit proximity on land price in this research. The model suggests Austin MetroRail has a positive impact on property values- for properties in the study area, every 100 feet further away from the train station, property values will decrease $13,068/acre. Another analysis of the rail only focused on 7 stations located in the city of Austin and suggests transit premium varies by different neighborhood. In high-income neighborhoods, transit proximity impact is positive; and in middle or low- income neighborhoods, it is negative. When stations were grouped into different study areas, models reveal transit proximity has different effects throughout the system. The research findings confirm the positive effect of Austin MetroRail although in some neighborhoods the effects vary and suggest a series of value-capture strategies to help finance future development.Community and Regional Plannin
