Critical tracking and stress analysis of Transnet engineering trailers.
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. University of KwaZulu-Natal. Durban, 2017.Transnet Engineering (TE) produces specialised trailers that are not commercially available. The design of the trailers is based on experience plus knowledge of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) designed and operational trailers. Since trailers are a new specialised product to TE no design data is available and for safety and reliability the trailer is “over”- designed. The risk of any part failing during operation is however minimised, if the trailer is soundly designed throughout, rather than focusing on critical areas and optimising the structure.
Since no trailer analysis has previously been undertaken in Transnet, the design had to be monitored and validated with the aim to reduce material costs and tare weight by approximately 10%. The aim of this project was to undertake and improve a theoretical simulation analysis and implement a practical system to measure and capture critical data on bath-tub and multi-purpose trailers. This would allow a better understanding of the loading characteristics of the trailers in the port environment and validate the existing design with the data acquired from practical field testing. Based on the theoretical simulations and data acquired during field testing, an efficient design is proposed that will save on material and labour thus reducing the net tare weight. A reduction in tare weight will allow for better tractive power from the hauler and improve the life span of the parts such as the brakes, tyres and bearings.
Worldwide knowledge regarding this project is limited; OEMs and tertiary institutions have undertaken similar projects but only for highway trailers and related topics. The current open market does not offer a study which meets this project’s needs; by adapting this practice to other aspects of the mechanical design, the product can be optimised for its application
'The Coolest Way to Watch Movie Trailers in the World': Trailers in the Digital Age
At a time of uncertainty over film and television texts being transferred online and on to portable media players, this article examines one of the few visual texts that exist comfortably on multiple screen technologies: the trailer. Adopted as an early cross-media text, the trailer now sits across cinema, television, home video, the internet, games consoles, mobile phones and iPods. Exploring the aesthetic and structural changes the trailer has undergone in its journey from the cinema to the iPod screen, the article focuses on the new mobility of these trailers, the shrinking screen size, and how audience participation with these texts has influenced both trailer production and distribution techniques. Exploring these texts, and their technological display, reveals how modern distribution techniques have created a shifting and interactive relationship between film studio and audience
Online Digital Archives Technology That Supports Rich, Student-Centered Learning Experiences
Today\u27s students watch the newest movie trailers on the Web, share music files, play video games with other players over the Internet, and swap digital pictures of the latest teen idols. Donald Tapscott points out in his book Growing Up Digital that as this rich multimedia experience becomes more a part of students\u27 lives outside of school, they will further expect this kind of experience in school as well
On the concept of the deceptive trailer: Trailer as paratext and multimodal model of film
The goal of the article is to contribute to the basic framework of the semiotic study of film trailers, approaching the trailer as a model of film. Discussing the signifying relations between the trailer and the film, I clarify mechanisms through which meta- or paratexts model their source texts and shape their reception. As examples, two cases in which trailers appear to be deceptive about the film’s genre are closely looked upon as the multimodal construction of the trailers of Alejandro G. Iñarritu’s Birdman and Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives is analysed. Following Lisa Kernan and Keith Johnston, the film’s genre is seen as the central type of information communicated by the trailer. In this context, genre is understood as dominant in the sense of Roman Jakobson. I propose dominant as the crucial concept: examining incoherences between the dominants of the film and its trailer makes it possible to conduct a closer analysis of the misleading model-making and to predict possible disappointment in the viewing experience

History and growth of the food trailer scene of Austin, Texas
textWhat began as small taco carts on South Lamar and catering trucks at construction sites in Austin, Texas, local entrepreneurs have recently taken the idea of mobile food and expanded it into a regional phenomenon. This report focuses on the range of trailer owners in the Austin, the challenges owners face in the competitive food landscape and tough economy, regulations, and the process of getting started in the new frontier of food service. Austin boasts one of the largest communities of food trailers – stationary, yet technically mobile – populations in the United States and has influenced a growing culture throughout the country in recent years.Journalis
Walmart\u27s Sustainability Journey: Elizabeth Fretheim and the Search for Sustainable Trucking
In early 2014 Elizabeth Fretheim, Director, Business Strategy and Sustainability for Logistics with Walmart, was reviewing with other members of the transportation team data on the fuel efficiency of their private fleet, which included over 6,000 trucks and 61,000 trailers operated by over 7,000 drivers. The logistics and transportation groups were vigilant in their basic goals of (1) loading trucks efficiently, (2) driving fewer miles, and (3) investing in fuel efficient equipment. But this issue concerned the drivers’ impact on mpg. In particular, the data showed that idling had increased over the past calendar year (2013) compared to the year before. Although some months showed small decreases, increases predominated. Given the company’s sustainability goal of doubling fleet efficiency over 2005 baselines by 2015, this was an issue of some concern
