The implementation and use of Ada on distributed systems with reliability requirements
The issues involved in the use of the programming language Ada on distributed systems are discussed. The effects of Ada programs on hardware failures such as loss of a processor are emphasized. It is shown that many Ada language elements are not well suited to this environment. Processor failure can easily lead to difficulties on those processors which remain. As an example, the calling task in a rendezvous may be suspended forever if the processor executing the serving task fails. A mechanism for detecting failure is proposed and changes to the Ada run time support system are suggested which avoid most of the difficulties. Ada program structures are defined which allow programs to reconfigure and continue to provide service following processor failure
Functional Requirements-Based Automated Testing for Avionics
We propose and demonstrate a method for the reduction of testing effort in
safety-critical software development using DO-178 guidance. We achieve this
through the application of Bounded Model Checking (BMC) to formal low-level
requirements, in order to generate tests automatically that are good enough to
replace existing labor-intensive test writing procedures while maintaining
independence from implementation artefacts. Given that existing manual
processes are often empirical and subjective, we begin by formally defining a
metric, which extends recognized best practice from code coverage analysis
strategies to generate tests that adequately cover the requirements. We then
formulate the automated test generation procedure and apply its prototype in
case studies with industrial partners. In review, the method developed here is
demonstrated to significantly reduce the human effort for the qualification of
software products under DO-178 guidance
Reducing the Number of Annotations in a Verification-oriented Imperative Language
Automated software verification is a very active field of research which has
made enormous progress both in theoretical and practical aspects. Recently, an
important amount of research effort has been put into applying these techniques
on top of mainstream programming languages. These languages typically provide
powerful features such as reflection, aliasing and polymorphism which are handy
for practitioners but, in contrast, make verification a real challenge. In this
work we present Pest, a simple experimental, while-style, multiprocedural,
imperative programming language which was conceived with verifiability as one
of its main goals. This language forces developers to concurrently think about
both the statements needed to implement an algorithm and the assertions
required to prove its correctness. In order to aid programmers, we propose
several techniques to reduce the number and complexity of annotations required
to successfully verify their programs. In particular, we show that high-level
iteration constructs may alleviate the need for providing complex loop

The development of a program analysis environment for Ada
A unit level, Ada software module testing system, called Query Utility Environment for Software Testing of Ada (QUEST/Ada), is described. The project calls for the design and development of a prototype system. QUEST/Ada design began with a definition of the overall system structure and a description of component dependencies. The project team was divided into three groups to resolve the preliminary designs of the parser/scanner: the test data generator, and the test coverage analyzer. The Phase 1 report is a working document from which the system documentation will evolve. It provides history, a guide to report sections, a literature review, the definition of the system structure and high level interfaces, descriptions of the prototype scope, the three major components, and the plan for the remainder of the project. The appendices include specifications, statistics, two papers derived from the current research, a preliminary users' manual, and the proposal and work plan for Phase 2
Model-driven engineering approach to design and implementation of robot control system
In this paper we apply a model-driven engineering approach to designing
domain-specific solutions for robot control system development. We present a
case study of the complete process, including identification of the domain
meta-model, graphical notation definition and source code generation for
subsumption architecture -- a well-known example of robot control architecture.
Our goal is to show that both the definition of the robot-control architecture
and its supporting tools fits well into the typical workflow of model-driven

A conceptual model for megaprogramming
Megaprogramming is component-based software engineering and life-cycle management. Magaprogramming and its relationship to other research initiatives (common prototyping system/common prototyping language, domain specific software architectures, and software understanding) are analyzed. The desirable attributes of megaprogramming software components are identified and a software development model and resulting prototype megaprogramming system (library interconnection language extended by annotated Ada) are described
