The measurement of scientific excellence around the world
This paper reviews scientific excellence in 38 countries and eight geographical areas using two sets of
novel indicators of citation impact: a family of high-impact indicators imported from the poverty
literature in Economics, and a set of indicators within the percentile rank approach. Among the main
findings with a dataset of about 4.4 million from Thomson Scientific we emphasize the following three.
(i) The proportion of articles of a research unit in the set formed by the 10% of the most cited papers
in the world, and two important percentile rank indicators bring no novelty relative to a traditional
average-based indicator. (ii) A high-impact indicator very sensitive to citation inequality is seen to be
useful to detect success at a local level, but not for a global ranking that includes small research units.
(iii) A monotonic high-impact indicator sensitive to any increase in citations is used to rank the
partition of the world into 46 units in the 22 broad fields distinguished by Thomson Scientific, as well
as the all-sciences case. The authors acknowledge financial support by Santander Universities Global Division of Banco

Which cities produce excellent papers worldwide more than can be expected? A new mapping approach--using Google Maps--based on statistical significance testing
The methods presented in this paper allow for a statistical analysis
revealing centers of excellence around the world using programs that are freely
available. Based on Web of Science data, field-specific excellence can be
identified in cities where highly-cited papers were published significantly.
Compared to the mapping approaches published hitherto, our approach is more
analytically oriented by allowing the assessment of an observed number of
excellent papers for a city (in the sample) against the expected number. Using
this test, the approach cannot only identify the top performers in output but
the "true jewels." These are cities locating authors who publish significantly
more top cited papers than can be expected. As the examples in this paper show
for physics, chemistry, and psychology, these cities do not necessarily have a
high output of excellent papers

The Concept of Teaching Excellence in Higher Education
The institutions of higher education are in a period of substantial change. They are under constant pressure to reveal their accomplishments while facing cumulative levels of economic limitations, modified responsibility structures, and demands to promoting excellence in teaching and learning capabilities.
The issue of excellence in teaching and learning has become a significant topic for higher education strategies around the world.
This chapter reports on the challenges faced by higher education institutions in advancing the excellence of teaching and learning through educational development programs.
It explores how academics adopt and promote excellence in their teaching and how they react to university quality programs

The Insistence of Inclusion: The Black Excellence Project
During the spring semester of 2020, COVID-19 did not stop this group of determined 9th graders at Bard Early College D.C. Together, they embarked on the Black Excellence Project (“BEP @ Bard”) with the partnership of Amateka College Prep. BEP @ Bard provided literacy-instruction while simultaneously teaching Black Excellence: the teaching of historical and contemporary exemplary Black figures who have impacted Washington, D.C. and raised awareness around topics like racism, social justice, and countering anti-Blackness. Throughout instruction, the students learned about multiple Black professionals from a variety of career pathways as they reflected on questions like, “what does Black Excellence mean to you?,” “who is an example of Black Excellence?,” and “are you for Black Excellence?” The culmination of the project was a published book of students’ essays, which centered their voices, their exciting ideas of professional goals and role models, and their critical thoughts about a world that could be if we all celebrated Black Excellence. Findings from the First Global Assessment on the current state of organizational excellence
Over 20 years, global research has validated the positive relationship between implementing the best management practices found in Excellence models and improving organizational performance. However, the global panorama of the engagement of organizations with excellence at a global scale lacked a definite analysis and comprehension. At the same time, much of the research on the field of excellence has focused on the organizations that have applied to the major excellence awards such as the Malcom Baldrige National Quality Award (US) or the European Excellence Award promoted by the European Foundation for Quality Management. In face of a growing number of excellence models and awards, the objective of this research is also to gather data from a more varied population. In order to do this, the Organizational Excellence Technical Committee (QMD, ASQ) launched in 2015 the 'First Global Assessment on the Current State of Organizational Excellence'. This research intendeds to provide data on the extent to which organizations have a culture committed to excellence and have deployed best management practices common to high performing organizations. Findings provide a snapshot of the current state of excellence around the world, and allow a more comprehensive view of the strengths and opportunities for improvement by organization size, industry sector and geographical region.- (undefined
