    Reachable but not receptive: enhancing smartphone interruptibility prediction by modelling the extent of user engagement with notifications

    Smartphone notifications frequently interrupt our daily lives, often at inopportune moments. We propose the decision-on-information-gain model, which extends the existing data collection convention to capture a range of interruptibility behaviour implicitly. Through a six-month in-the-wild study of 11,346 notifications, we find that this approach captures up to 125% more interruptibility cases. Secondly, we find different correlating contextual features for different behaviour using the approach and find that predictive models can be built with >80% precision for most users. However we note discrepancies in performance across labelling, training, and evaluation methods, creating design considerations for future systems

    The Importance of who and what in Interruption Management: Empirical Evidence from a Cell Phone Use Study

    Interruption management in technology mediated communication is a key concern in collaborative work and social environments. Previous empirical and theoretical work in predicting interruptibility predominantly focuses on interruptee’s local context namely identifying cognitively and socially intruding contexts such as mental work load levels, activity, place of activity. They largely ignore the relational context namely “who” the interruption is from or “what” it is about. This paper addresses this issue by systematically investigating the use of the various contextual factors in interruption management practices of everyday cell phone use. Analysis of 1201 incoming calls from our experience sampling method study of cell phone use, shows that “who” is calling is used most of the time (87.4%) by individuals to make deliberate call handling decisions (N=834), in contrast to the interruptee’s current local social (34.9%) or cognitive (43%) contexts.     Decomposing responses to mobile notifications

    Notifications from mobile devices frequently prompt us with information, either to merely inform us or to elicit a reaction. This has led to increasing research interest in considering an individual’s interruptibility prior to issuing notifications, in order for them to be positively received. To achieve this, predictive models need to be built from previous response behaviour where the individual’s interruptibility is known. However, there are several degrees of freedom in achieving this, from different definitions in what it means to be interruptible and a notification to be successful, to various methods for collecting data, and building predictive models. The primary focus of this thesis is to improve upon the typical convention used for labelling interruptibility, an area which has had limited direct attention. This includes the proposal of a flexible framework, called the decision-on-information-gain model, which passively observes response behaviour in order to support various interruptibility definitions. In contrast, previous studies have largely surrounded the investigation of influential contextual factors on predicting interruptibility, using a broad labelling convention that relies on notifications being responded to fully and potentially a survey needing to be completed. The approach is supported through two in-the-wild studies of Android notifications, one with 11,000 notifications across 90 users, and another with 32,000,000 across 3000 users. Analysis of these datasets shows that: a) responses to notifications is a decisionmaking process, whereby individuals can be reachable but not receptive to their content, supporting the premise of the approach; b) the approach is implementable on typical Android devices and capable of adapting to different notification designs and user preferences; and c) the different labels produced by the model are predictable using data sources that do not require invasive permissions or persistent background monitoring; however there are notable performance differences between different machine learning strategies for training and evaluation

    Facilitating Reliable Autonomy with Human-Robot Interaction

    Autonomous robots are increasingly deployed to complex environments in which we cannot predict all possible failure cases a priori. Robustness to failures can be provided by humans enacting the roles of: (1) developers who can iteratively incorporate robustness into the robot system, (2) collocated bystanders who can be approached for aid, and (3) remote teleoperators who can be contacted for guidance. However, assisting the robot in any of these roles can place demands on the time or effort of the human. This dissertation develops modules to reduce the frequency and duration of failure interventions in order to increase the reliability of autonomous robots, while also reducing the demand on humans. In pursuit of that goal, the dissertation makes the following contributions: (1) A development paradigm for autonomous robots that separates task specification from error recovery. The paradigm reduces burden on developers while making the robot robust to failures. (2) A model for gauging the interruptibility of collocated humans. A human-subjects study shows that using the model can reduce the time expended by the robot during failure recovery. (3) A human-subjects experiment on the effects of decision support provided to remote operators during failures. The results show that humans need both diagnosis and action recommendations as decision support during an intervention. (4) An evaluation of model features and unstructured Machine Learning (ML) techniques in pursuit of learning robust suggestions models from intervention data, in order to reduce developer effort. The results indicate that careful crafting of features can lead to improved performance, but that without such feature selection, current ML algorithms lack robustness in addressing a domain where the robot's observations are heavily influenced by the user's actions.Ph.D

    NotiMind: responses to smartphone notifications as affective sensors

    Today's mobile phone users are faced with large numbers of notifications on social media, ranging from new followers on Twitter and emails to messages received from WhatsApp and Facebook. These digital alerts continuously disrupt activities through instant calls for attention. This paper examines closely the way everyday users interact with notifications and their impact on users’ emotion. Fifty users were recruited to download our application NotiMind and use it over a five-week period. Users’ phones collected thousands of social and system notifications along with affect data collected via self-reported PANAS tests three times a day. Results showed a noticeable correlation between positive affective measures and keyboard activities. When large numbers of Post and Remove notifications occur, a corresponding increase in negative affective measures is detected. Our predictive model has achieved a good accuracy level using three different classifiers "in the wild" (F-measure 74-78% within-subject model, 72-76% global model). Our findings show that it is possible to automatically predict when people are experiencing positive, neutral or negative affective states based on interactions with notifications. We also show how our findings open the door to a wide range of applications in relation to emotion awareness on social and mobile communication
