    Expanding Dimensionality in Cinema Color: Impacting Observer Metamerism through Multiprimary Display

    Television and cinema display are both trending towards greater ranges and saturation of reproduced colors made possible by near-monochromatic RGB illumination technologies. Through current broadcast and digital cinema standards work, system designs employing laser light sources, narrow-band LED, quantum dots and others are being actively endorsed in promotion of Wide Color Gamut (WCG). Despite artistic benefits brought to creative content producers, spectrally selective excitations of naturally different human color response functions exacerbate variability of observer experience. An exaggerated variation in color-sensing is explicitly counter to the exhaustive controls and calibrations employed in modern motion picture pipelines. Further, singular standard observer summaries of human color vision such as found in the CIE’s 1931 and 1964 color matching functions and used extensively in motion picture color management are deficient in recognizing expected human vision variability. Many researchers have confirmed the magnitude of observer metamerism in color matching in both uniform colors and imagery but few have shown explicit color management with an aim of minimized difference in observer perception variability. This research shows that not only can observer metamerism influences be quantitatively predicted and confirmed psychophysically but that intentionally engineered multiprimary displays employing more than three primaries can offer increased color gamut with drastically improved consistency of experience. To this end, a seven-channel prototype display has been constructed based on observer metamerism models and color difference indices derived from the latest color vision demographic research. This display has been further proven in forced-choice paired comparison tests to deliver superior color matching to reference stimuli versus both contemporary standard RGB cinema projection and recently ratified standard laser projection across a large population of color-normal observers

    Symbols are not uniquely human

    Modern semiotics is a branch of logics that formally defines symbol-based communication. In recent years, the semiotic classification of signs has been invoked to support the notion that symbols are uniquely human. Here we show that alarm-calls such as those used by African vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops), logically satisfy the semiotic definition of symbol. We also show that the acquisition of vocal symbols in vervet monkeys can be successfully simulated by a computer program based on minimal semiotic and neurobiological constraints. The simulations indicate that learning depends on the tutor-predator ratio, and that apprentice-generated auditory mistakes in vocal symbol interpretation have little effect on the learning rates of apprentices (up to 80% of mistakes are tolerated). In contrast, just 10% of apprentice-generated visual mistakes in predator identification will prevent any vocal symbol to be correctly associated with a predator call in a stable manner. Tutor unreliability was also deleterious to vocal symbol learning: a mere 5% of “lying” tutors were able to completely disrupt symbol learning, invariably leading to the acquisition of incorrect associations by apprentices. Our investigation corroborates the existence of vocal symbols in a non-human species, and indicates that symbolic competence emerges spontaneously from classical associative learning mechanisms when the conditioned stimuli are self-generated, arbitrary and socially efficacious. We propose that more exclusive properties of human language, such as syntax, may derive from the evolution of higher-order domains for neural association, more removed from both the sensory input and the motor output, able to support the gradual complexification of grammatical categories into syntax

    A Test Vector Minimization Algorithm Based On Delta Debugging For Post-Silicon Validation Of Pcie Rootport

    In silicon hardware design, such as designing PCIe devices, design verification is an essential part of the design process, whereby the devices are subjected to a series of tests that verify the functionality. However, manual debugging is still widely used in post-silicon validation and is a major bottleneck in the validation process. The reason is a large number of tests vectors have to be analyzed, and this slows process down. To solve the problem, a test vector minimizer algorithm is proposed to eliminate redundant test vectors that do not contribute to reproduction of a test failure, hence, improving the debug throughput. The proposed methodology is inspired by the Delta Debugging algorithm which is has been used in automated software debugging but not in post-silicon hardware debugging. The minimizer operates on the principle of binary partitioning of the test vectors, and iteratively testing each subset (or complement of set) on a post-silicon System-Under-Test (SUT), to identify and eliminate redundant test vectors. Test results using test vector sets containing deliberately introduced erroneous test vectors show that the minimizer is able to isolate the erroneous test vectors. In test cases containing up to 10,000 test vectors, the minimizer requires about 16ns per test vector in the test case when only one erroneous test vector is present. In a test case with 1000 vectors including erroneous vectors, the same minimizer requires about 140μs per erroneous test vector that is injected. Thus, the minimizer’s CPU consumption is significantly smaller than the typical amount of time of a test running on SUT. The factors that significantly impact the performance of the algorithm are number of erroneous test vectors and distribution (spacing) of the erroneous vectors. The effect of total number of test vectors and position of the erroneous vectors are relatively minor compared to the other two. The minimization algorithm therefore was most effective for cases where there are only a few erroneous test vectors, with large number of test vectors in the set

    Abstract. The objective of the verifcation process of hardware is ensuring that the design does not contain any functional errors. Verifying the correct functionality of a large System-on-Chip (SoC) is a co-design process that is performed by running immature software on immature hardware. Among the key objectives is to ensure the completion of the design before proceeding to fabrication. Verification is performed using a mix of software simulations that imitate the hardware functions and emulations executed on reconfigurable hardware. Both techniques are time-consuming, the software running perhaps at a billionth and the emulation at thousands of times slower than the targeted system. A good verification strategy reduces the time to market without compromising the testing coverage. This thesis compares regression verification strategies for a large SoC project. These include different techniques of test case selection, test case prioritization that have been researched in software projects. There is no single strategy that performs well in SoC throughout the whole development cycle. In the early stages of development time based test case prioritization provides the fastest convergence. Later history based test case prioritization and risk based test case selection gave a good balance between coverage, error detection, execution time, and foundations to predict the time to completion

    How active perception and attractor dynamics shape perceptual categorization: A computational model

    We propose a computational model of perceptual categorization that fuses elements of grounded and sensorimotor theories of cognition with dynamic models of decision-making. We assume that category information consists in anticipated patterns of agent–environment interactions that can be elicited through overt or covert (simulated) eye movements, object manipulation, etc. This information is firstly encoded when category information is acquired, and then re-enacted during perceptual categorization. The perceptual categorization consists in a dynamic competition between attractors that encode the sensorimotor patterns typical of each category; action prediction success counts as ‘‘evidence’’ for a given category and contributes to falling into the corresponding attractor. The evidence accumulation process is guided by an active perception loop, and the active exploration of objects (e.g., visual exploration) aims at eliciting expected sensorimotor patterns that count as evidence for the object category. We present a computational model incorporating these elements and describing action prediction, active perception, and attractor dynamics as key elements of perceptual categorizations. We test the model in three simulated perceptual categorization tasks, and we discuss its relevance for grounded and sensorimotor theories of cognition.Peer reviewe
