Cattle Rustling and Its Effects among Three Communities (Dinka, Murle and Nuer) in Jonglei State, South Sudan

Inter-tribal clashes have emerged to be one of the biggest contributors to rampant insecurity witnessed in South Sudan and in Jonglei state the clashes revolve around cattle rustling. Efforts to quell the violence from government, the international community, religious movements, and other South Sudan national organizations have not yielded significant fruit yet. This qualitative case study research explores the underlying manifestation of the conflicts among three communities Nuer, Murle and Dinka, who live in Jonglei. The main objective was to explore the changing context of cattle rustling and understand the effects of conflicts related to cattle raiding in Jonglei. The approach of the dissertation is unique in that it examines both historical and current trends in cattle rustling to create a better understanding of the conflict situation. The dissertation focuses on Jonglei state because it has produced the highest number of conflicts related to cattle raiding

Exploring the Ethical Leadership of Bank Managers

Ethical dilemmas in banks have resulted in financial losses. A bank manager\u27s ethical leadership strategy can affect the direction, success, operations, and profits of banks. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the ethical leadership strategies of bank managers that promoted profitability. This study\u27s conceptual framework was Bandura\u27s social learning theory. Data were collected from semistructured, face-to-face interviews with a sample of 2 bank managers from different Maryland banks and a review of these banks\u27 documents. Member checking was conducted to verify the trustworthiness of the findings. Data were analyzed using Yin\u27s 5-step approach. Themes that emerged from the data analysis included: business relationships, communities, ethics, leadership, and strategies. Bank managers who use these ethical leadership strategies might improve the profits and success of banks. Applying the findings of this study might benefit the banking industry and promote positive social change by providing an understanding of how ethical leadership strategies of bank managers can promote profitability while mitigating ethical dilemmas

The Influence of Culture on Senior Leaders as They Seek to Resolve Ethical Dilemmas at Work

This dissertation explores some of the difficulties that arise when using the cognitive development model to explain ethical behaviour in the world of work. An alternative theoretical position is explored, one that was originally developed in anthropology by Richard Shweder and Jonathan Haidt. This position asserts that ethical behaviour is not universal, it is instead highly contextual and may be influenced by both organisational and ethnic/national culture. The influence of culture on ethical behaviour is explored using narrative research techniques. The research is based on thirty in depth interviews with senior executives who frequently faced ethical dilemmas at work. Interviewees represented a number of diverse cultural backgrounds (including British, Dutch, US, Indian, Saudi, Colombian and Brazilian) and a number of strong organisation cultures. The conclusions emphasize the importance of personal networks as a resource for resolving ethical dilemmas and the importance of different cultural approaches to managing power relations within personal networks.
