    Evolutionary Computation in System Identification: Review and Recommendations

    Two of the steps in system identification are model structure selection and parameter estimation. In model structure selection, several model structures are evaluated and selected. Because the evaluation of all possible model structures during selection and estimation of the parameters requires a lot of time, a rigorous method in which these tasks can be simplified is usually preferred. This paper reviews cumulatively some of the methods that have been tried since the past 40 years. Among the methods, evolutionary computation is known to be the most recent one and hereby being reviewed in more detail, including what advantages the method contains and how it is specifically implemented. At the end of the paper, some recommendations are provided on how evolutionary computation can be utilized in a more effective way. In short, these are by modifying the search strategy and simplifying the procedure based on problem a priori knowledge

    Spline Modeling and Localized Mutual Information Monitoring of Pairwise Associations in Animal Movement

    to a new era of remote sensing and geospatial analysis. In environmental science and conservation ecology, biotelemetric data recorded is often high-dimensional, spatially and/or temporally, and functional in nature, meaning that there is an underlying continuity to the biological process of interest. GPS-tracking of animal movement is commonly characterized by irregular time-recording of animal position, and the movement relationships between animals are prone to sudden change. In this dissertation, I propose a spline modeling approach for exploring interactions and time-dependent correlation between the movement of apex predators exhibiting territorial and territory-sharing behavior. A measure of localized mutual information (LMI) is proposed to derive a correlation function for monitoring changes in the pairwise association between animal movement trajectories. The properties of the LMI measure are assessed analytically and by simulation under a variety of circumstances. Advantages and disadvantages of the LMI measure are assessed and alternate measures of LMI are proposed to handle potential disadvantages. The proposed measure of LMI is shown to be an effective tool for detecting shifts in the correlation of animal movements, and seasonal/phasal correlatory structure

    Development of Efficient Intensity Based Registration Techniques for Multi-modal Brain Images

    Recent advances in medical imaging have resulted in the development of many imaging techniques that capture various aspects of the patients anatomy and metabolism. These are accomplished with image registration: the task of transforming images on a common anatomical coordinate space. Image registration is one of the important task for multi-modal brain images, which has paramount importance in clinical diagnosis, leads to treatment of brain diseases. In many other applications, image registration characterizes anatomical variability, to detect changes in disease state over time, and by mapping functional information into anatomical space. This thesis is focused to explore intensity-based registration techniques to accomplish precise information with accurate transformation for multi-modal brain images. In this view, we addressed mainly three important issues of image registration both in the rigid and non-rigid framework, i.e. i) information theoretic based similarity measure for alignment measurement, ii) free form deformation (FFD) based transformation, and iii) evolutionary technique based optimization of the cost function. Mutual information (MI) is a widely used information theoretic similarity measure criterion for multi-modal brain image registration. MI only dense the quantitative aspects of information based on the probability of events. For rustication of the information of events, qualitative aspect i.e. utility or saliency is a necessitate factor for consideration. In this work, a novel similarity measure is proposed, which incorporates the utility information into mutual Information, known as Enhanced Mutual Information(EMI).It is found that the maximum information gain using EMI is higher as compared to that of other state of arts. The utility or saliency employed in EMI is a scale invariant parameter, and hence it may fail to register in case of projective and perspective transformations. To overcome this bottleneck, salient region (SR) based Enhance Mutual Information (SR-EMI)is proposed, a new similarity measure for robust and accurate registration. The proposed SR-EMI based registration technique is robust to register the multi-modal brain images at a faster rate with better alignment

    New strategies for the aerodynamic design optimization of aeronautical configurations through soft-computing techniques

Nowadays, this topic is of great importance in order to allow the European aeronautical industry to reduce their development and operational costs, decrease the time-to-market for new aircraft, improve the quality of their products and therefore maintain their competitiveness. Within this thesis, a study of the state-of-the-art of the aerodynamic optimization tools has been performed, and several contributions have been proposed at different levels: -One of the main drawbacks for an industrial application of aerodynamic optimization tools is the huge requirement of computational resources, in particular, for complex optimization problems, current methodological approaches would need more than a year to obtain an optimized aircraft. For this reason, one proposed contribution of this work is focused on reducing the computational cost by the use of different techniques as surrogate modelling, control theory, as well as other more software-related techniques as code optimization and proper domain parallelization, all with the goal of decreasing the cost of the aerodynamic design process. -Other contribution is related to the consideration of the design process as a global optimization problem, and, more specifically, the use of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) to perform a preliminary broad exploration of the design space, due to their ability to obtain global optima. Regarding this, EAs have been hybridized with metamodels (or surrogate models), in order to substitute expensive CFD simulations. In this thesis, an innovative approach for the global aerodynamic optimization of aeronautical configurations is proposed, consisting of an Evolutionary Programming algorithm hybridized with a Support Vector regression algorithm (SVMr) as a metamodel. Specific issues as precision, dataset training size, geometry parameterization sensitivity and techniques for design of experiments are discussed and the potential of the proposed approach to achieve innovative shapes that would not be achieved with traditional methods is assessed. -Then, after a broad exploration of the design space, the optimization process is continued with local gradient-based optimization techniques for a finer improvement of the geometry. Here, an automated optimization framework is presented to address aerodynamic shape design problems. Key aspects of this framework include the use of the adjoint methodology to make the computational requirements independent of the number of design variables, and Computer Aided Design (CAD)-based shape parameterization, which uses the flexibility of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) to handle complex configurations. The mentioned approach is applied to the optimization of several test cases and the improvements of the proposed strategy and its ability to achieve efficient shapes will complete this study
