This has motivated companies around the world to adopt zero-landfill goals and move towards circular economy to retain the product’s value during its whole life cycle. However, designing an efficient closed loop supply chain is a challenging undertaking as it presents a set of unique challenges, mainly owing to the need to handle pickups and deliveries at the same time and the necessity to meet the customer requirements within a certain time limit. In this paper, we model this problem as a bi-objective periodic location routing problem with simultaneous pickup and delivery as well as time windows and examine the performance of two procedures, namely NSGA-II and NRGA, to solve it. The goal is to find the best locations for a set of depots, allocation of customers to these depots, allocation of customers to service days and the optimal routes to be taken by a set of homogeneous vehicles to minimise the total cost and to minimise the overall violation from the customers’ defined time limits. Our results show that while there is not a significant difference between the two algorithms in terms of diversity and number of solutions generated, NSGA-II outperforms NRGA when it comes to spacing and runtime.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Hybrid metaheuristics for solving multi-depot pickup and delivery problems

    In today's logistics businesses, increasing petrol prices, fierce competition, dynamic business environments and volume volatility put pressure on logistics service providers (LSPs) or third party logistics providers (3PLs) to be efficient, differentiated, adaptive, and horizontally collaborative in order to survive and remain competitive. In this climate, efficient computerised-decision support tools play an essential role. Especially, for freight transportation, e efficiently solving a Pickup and Delivery Problem (PDP) and its variants by an optimisation engine is the core capability required in making operational planning and decisions. For PDPs, it is required to determine minimum-cost routes to serve a number of requests, each associated with paired pickup and delivery points. A robust solution method for solving PDPs is crucial to the success of implementing decision support tools, which are integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS) and Fleet Telematics so that the flexibility, agility, visibility and transparency are fulfilled. If these tools are effectively implemented, competitive advantage can be gained in the area of cost leadership and service differentiation. In this research, variants of PDPs, which multiple depots or providers are considered, are investigated. These are so called Multi-depot Pickup and Delivery Problems (MDPDPs). To increase geographical coverage, continue growth and encourage horizontal collaboration, efficiently solving the MDPDPs is vital to operational planning and its total costs. This research deals with designing optimisation algorithms for solving a variety of real-world applications. Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulations of the MDPDPs are presented. Due to being NP-hard, the computational time for solving by exact methods becomes prohibitive. Several metaheuristics and hybrid metaheuristics are investigated in this thesis.     A new three phase method (SDP method) for the multi-objective vehicle routing problem with simultaneous delivery and pickup (VRPSDP)

    Transportation service operators are witnessing a growing demand for bi-directional movement of goods. Given this, the following thesis considers an extension to the vehicle routing problem (VRP) known as the delivery and pickup transportation problem (DPP), where delivery and pickup demands may occupy the same route. The problem is formulated here as the vehicle routing problem with simultaneous delivery and pickup (VRPSDP), which requires the concurrent service of the demands at the customer location. This formulation provides the greatest opportunity for cost savings for both the service provider and recipient. The aims of this research are to propose a new theoretical design to solve the multi-objective VRPSDP, provide software support for the suggested design and validate the method through a set of experiments. A new real-life based multi-objective VRPSDP is studied here, which requires the minimisation of the often conflicting objectives: operated vehicle fleet size, total routing distance and the maximum variation between route distances (workload variation). The former two objectives are commonly encountered in the domain and the latter is introduced here because it is essential for real-life routing problems. The VRPSDP is defined as a hard combinatorial optimisation problem, therefore an approximation method, Simultaneous Delivery and Pickup method (SDPmethod) is proposed to solve it. The SDPmethod consists of three phases. The first phase constructs a set of diverse partial solutions, where one is expected to form part of the near-optimal solution. The second phase determines assignment possibilities for each sub-problem. The third phase solves the sub-problems using a parallel genetic algorithm. The suggested genetic algorithm is improved by the introduction of a set of tools: genetic operator switching mechanism via diversity thresholds, accuracy analysis tool and a new fitness evaluation mechanism. This three phase method is proposed to address the shortcoming that exists in the domain, where an initial solution is built only then to be completely dismantled and redesigned in the optimisation phase. In addition, a new routing heuristic, RouteAlg, is proposed to solve the VRPSDP sub-problem, the travelling salesman problem with simultaneous delivery and pickup (TSPSDP). The experimental studies are conducted using the well known benchmark Salhi and Nagy (1999) test problems, where the SDPmethod and RouteAlg solutions are compared with the prominent works in the VRPSDP domain. The SDPmethod has demonstrated to be an effective method for solving the multi-objective VRPSDP and the RouteAlg for the TSPSDP

    A Comparative Study of the PSO and GA for the m-MDPDPTW

    The m-MDPDPTW is the multi-vehicles, multi-depots pick-up and delivery problem with time windows. It is an optimization vehicles routing problem which must meet requests for transport between suppliers and customers for the purpose of satisfying precedence, capacity and time constraints. This problem is a very important class of operational research, which is part of the category of NP-hard problems. Its resolution therefore requires the use of evolutionary algorithms such as Genetic Algorithms (GA) or Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). We present, in this sense, a comparative study between two approaches based respectively on the GA and the PSO for the optimization of m-MDPDPTW. We propose, in this paper, a literature review of the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) and the Pick-up and Delivery Problem with Time Windows (PDPTW), present our approaches, whose objective is to give a satisfying solution to the m-MDPDPTW minimizing the total distance travelled. The performance of both approaches is evaluated using various sets instances from [10] PDPTW benchmark data problems. From our study, in the case of m-MDPDPTW problem, the proposed GA reached to better results compared with the PSO algorithm and can be considered the most appropriate model to solve our m-MDPDPTW problem

    Application of optimization techniques to solve overcurrent relay coordination.

Initially, conventional methods were favoured to optimize protection coordination; however, the implementation process is laborious and time-consuming. “Therefore, recent studies have adopted the utilisation of particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithms to solve overcurrent relay coordination problems and maximise system selectivity and operational speed. Particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithms are evolutionary algorithms that at times suffer from premature convergence due to poor selection of control parameters. Consequently, this thesis aims to present a comprehensive sensitivity analysis to evaluate the effect of the discrete control parameters on the performance of particle swarm optimizer and genetic algorithms, alternatively on the behaviour of overcurrent relays. The main objectives of this research work also include modelling and simulation of distribution system protection scheme, employment of evolutionary algorithms with control parameters that perform efficiently and effectively to maximise protection coordination between relays, optimize relay operating time and maintain the stipulate coordination time interval, and lastly, to outline future recommendations. The distribution network understudy was modelled and simulated on a real-time digital simulator to validate protection settings, and the verification of evolutionary algorithms performance was displayed on Matlab/Simulink. An extensive parametric sensitivity analysis was conducted to understand the impact of the individual control parameters and their respective influence on the performance of evolutionary algorithms. The findings indicate that particle swarm optimization is more sensitive to inertia weight and swarm size while the number of iterations has minimal effect. The results also depict that genetic algorithms’ performance is mostly influenced by crossover probability, mutation probability, and population size. Sensitivity analysis results were verified by comparing the performance of particle swarm optimizer with genetic algorithms, which demonstrated that particle swarm optimization performs efficiently and robustly in solving the considered problem, especially in terms of convergence speed. Furthermore, overcurrent relays were more sensitive, selective, and the operational speed was reduced for particle swarm optimizer compared to other algorithms. The optimal protection coordination achieved using particle swarm optimization showed superiority of the algorithm, its ability to circumvent premature convergence, consistency, and” efficiency

In the PDP, it is generally required to find one or more minimum cost routes to serve a number of customers, where two types of services may be performed at a customer location, a pickup or a delivery. Applications of the PDP are frequently encountered in every day transportation and logistic services, and the problem is likely to assume even greater prominence in the future, due to the increase in e-commerce and Internet shopping. In this research we considered two particular variants of the PDP, the Pickup and Delivery Problem with Time Windows (PDPTW), and the One-commodity Pickup and Delivery Problem (1-PDP). In both problems, the total transportation cost should be minimized, without violating a number of pre-specified problem constraints. In our research, we investigate heuristic and meta-heuristic approaches for solving the selected PDP variants. Unlike previous research in this area, though, we try to focus on handling the difficult problem constraints in a simple and effective way, without complicating the overall solution methodology. Two main aspects of the solution algorithm are directed to achieve this goal, the solution representation and the neighbourhood moves. Based on this perception, we tailored a number of heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms for solving our problems. Among these algorithms are: Genetic Algorithms, Simulated Annealing, Hill Climbing and Variable Neighbourhood Search.
