    Model fusion using fuzzy aggregation: Special applications to metal properties

    To improve the modelling performance, one should either propose a new modelling methodology or make the best of existing models. In this paper, the study is concentrated on the latter solution, where a structure-free modelling paradigm is proposed. It does not rely on a fixed structure and can combine various modelling techniques in ‘symbiosis’ using a ‘master fuzzy system’. This approach is shown to be able to include the advantages of different modelling techniques altogether by requiring less training and by minimising the efforts relating optimisation of the final structure. The proposed approach is then successfully applied to the industrial problems of predicting machining induced residual stresses for aerospace alloy components as well as modelling the mechanical properties of heat-treated alloy steels, both representing complex, non-linear and multi-dimensional environments

    Fuzzy control turns 50: 10 years later

    In 2015, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Fuzzy Sets, ten years after the main milestones regarding its applications in fuzzy control in their 40th birthday were reviewed in FSS, see [1]. Ten years is at the same time a long period and short time thinking to the inner dynamics of research. This paper, presented for these 50 years of Fuzzy Sets is taking into account both thoughts. A first part presents a quick recap of the history of fuzzy control: from model-free design, based on human reasoning to quasi-LPV (Linear Parameter Varying) model-based control design via some milestones, and key applications. The second part shows where we arrived and what the improvements are since the milestone of the first 40 years.     Towards an Online Fuzzy Modeling for Human Internal States Detection

    International audienceIn human-robot interaction, a social intelligent robot should be capable of understanding the emotional internal state of the interacting human so as to behave in a proper manner. The main problem towards this approach is that human internal states can't be totally trained on, so the robot should be able to learn and classify emotional states online. This research paper focuses on developing a novel online incremental learning of human emotional states using Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy model. When new data is present, a decisive criterion decides if the new elements constitute a new cluster or if they confirm one of the previously existing clusters. If the new data is attributed to an existing cluster, the evolving fuzzy rules of the TS model may be updated whether by adding a new rule or by modifying existing rules according to the descriptive potential of the new data elements with respect to the entire existing cluster centers. However, if a new cluster is formed, a corresponding new TS fuzzy model is created and then updated when new data elements get attributed to it. The subtractive clustering algorithm is used to calculate the cluster centers that present the rules of the TS models. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method

    An Online Fuzzy-Based Approach for Human Emotions Detection: An Overview on the Human Cognitive Model of Understanding and Generating Multimodal Actions

    International audienceAn intelligent robot needs to be able to understand human emotions, and to understand and generate actions through cognitive systems that operate in a similar way to human cognition. In this chapter, we mainly focus on developing an online incremental learning system of emotions using Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy model. Additionally, we present a general overview for understanding and generating multimodal actions from the cognitive point of view. The main objective of this system is to detect whether the observed emotion needs a new corresponding multi-modal action to be generated in case it constitutes a new emotion cluster not learnt before, or it can be attributed to one of the existing actions in memory in case it belongs to an existing cluster

    Automatic synthesis of fuzzy systems: An evolutionary overview with a genetic programming perspective

    Studies in Evolutionary Fuzzy Systems (EFSs) began in the 90s and have experienced a fast development since then, with applications to areas such as pattern recognition, curve‐fitting and regression, forecasting and control. An EFS results from the combination of a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) with an Evolutionary Algorithm (EA). This relationship can be established for multiple purposes: fine‐tuning of FIS's parameters, selection of fuzzy rules, learning a rule base or membership functions from scratch, and so forth. Each facet of this relationship creates a strand in the literature, as membership function fine‐tuning, fuzzy rule‐based learning, and so forth and the purpose here is to outline some of what has been done in each aspect. Special focus is given to Genetic Programming‐based EFSs by providing a taxonomy of the main architectures available, as well as by pointing out the gaps that still prevail in the literature. The concluding remarks address some further topics of current research and trends, such as interpretability analysis, multiobjective optimization, and synthesis of a FIS through Evolving methods

    Global plant characterisation and distribution with evolution and climate

    Since Arrhenius published seminal work in 1921, research interest in the description of plant traits and grouped characteristics of plant species has grown, underpinning diversity in trophic levels. Geographic exploration and diversity studies prior to and after 1921 culminated in biological, chemical and computer-simulated approaches describing rudiments of growth patterns within dynamic conditions of Earth. This thesis has two parts:- classical theory and multidisciplinary fusion to give mathematical strength to characterising plant species in space and time.Individual plant species occurrences are used to obtain a Species-Area Relationship. The use of both Boolean and logic-based mathematics is then integrated to describe classical methods and propose fuzzy logic control to predict species ordination. Having demonstrated a lack of significance between species and area for data modelled in this thesis a logic based approach is taken. Mamdani and T-S-K fuzzy system stability is verified by application to individual plant occurrences, validated by a multiple interfaced data portal. Quantitative mathematical models are differentiated with a genetic programming approach, enabling visualisation of multi-objective dispersal of plant strategies, plant metabolism and life-forms within the water-energy dynamic of a fixed time-scale scenario. The distributions of plant characteristics are functionally enriched through the use of Gaussian process models. A generic framework of a Geographic Information System is used to visualise distributions and it is noted that such systems can be used to assist in design and implementation of policies. The study has made use of field based data and the application of mathematic methods is shown to be appropriate and generative in the description of characteristics of plant species, with the aim of application of plant strategies, life-forms and photosynthetic types to a global framework. Novel application of fuzzy logic and related mathematic method to plant distribution and characteristics has been shown on a global scale. Quantification of the uncertainty gives novel insight through consequent trophic levels of biological systems, with great relevance to mathematic and geographic subject development. Informative value of Z matrices of plant distribution is increased substantiating sustainability and conservation policy value to ecosystems and human populations dependent upon them for their needs.Key words: sustainability, conservation policy, Boolean and logic-based, fuzzy logic, genetic programming, multi-objective dispersal, strategies, metabolism, life-forms

    Multiobjective Evolutionary Optimization for Prototype-Based Fuzzy Classifiers

    Evolving intelligent systems (EISs), particularly, the zero-order ones have demonstrated strong performance on many real-world problems concerning data stream classification, while offering high model transparency and interpretability thanks to their prototype-based nature. Zero-order EISs typically learn prototypes by clustering streaming data online in a “one pass” manner for greater computation efficiency. However, such identified prototypes often lack optimality, resulting in less precise classification boundaries, thereby hindering the potential classification performance of the systems. To address this issue, a commonly adopted strategy is to minimise the training error of the models on historical training data or alternatively, to iteratively minimise the intra-cluster variance of the clusters obtained via online data partitioning. This recognises the fact that the ultimate classification performance of zero-order EISs is driven by the positions of prototypes in the data space. Yet, simply minimising the training error may potentially lead to overfitting, whilst minimising the intra-cluster variance does not necessarily ensure the optimised prototype-based models to attain improved classification outcomes. To achieve better classification performance whilst avoiding overfitting for zero-order EISs, this paper presents a novel multi-objective optimisation approach, enabling EISs to obtain optimal prototypes via involving these two disparate but complementary strategies simultaneously. Five decision-making schemes are introduced for selecting a suitable solution to deploy from the final non-dominated set of the resulting optimised models. Systematic experimental studies are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed optimisation approach in improving the classification performance of zero-order EISs
