    Smart greenhouses as the path towards precision agriculture in the food-energy and water nexus: case study of Qatar

    Greenhouse farming is essential in increasing domestic crop production in countries with limited resources and a harsh climate like Qatar. Smart greenhouse development is even more important to overcome these limitations and achieve high levels of food security. While the main aim of greenhouses is to offer an appropriate environment for high-yield production while protecting crops from adverse climate conditions, smart greenhouses provide precise regulation and control of the microclimate variables by utilizing the latest control techniques, advanced metering and communication infrastructures, and smart management systems thus providing the optimal environment for crop development. However, due to the development of information technology, greenhouses are undergoing a big transformation. In fact, the new generation of greenhouses has gone from simple constructions to sophisticated factories that drive agricultural production at the minimum possible cost. The main objective of this paper is to present a comprehensive understanding framework of the actual greenhouse development in Qatar, so as to be able to support the transition to sustainable precision agriculture. Qatar’s greenhouse market is a dynamic sector, and it is expected to mark double-digit growth by 2025. Thus, this study may offer effective supporting information to decision and policy makers, professionals, and end-users in introducing new technologies and taking advantage of monitoring techniques, artificial intelligence, and communication infrastructure in the agriculture sector by adopting smart greenhouses, consequently enhancing the Food-Energy-Water Nexus resilience and sustainable development. Furthermore, an analysis of the actual agriculture situation in Qatar is provided by examining its potential development regarding the existing drivers and barriers. Finally, the study presents the policy measures already implemented in Qatar and analyses the future development of the local greenhouse sector in terms of sustainability and resource-saving perspective and its penetration into Qatar’s economy.Open Access funding provided by the Qatar National Library.     Development of track-driven agriculture robot with terrain classification functionality / Khairul Azmi Mahadhir

    Over the past years, many robots have been devised to facilitate agricultural activities (that are labor-intensive in nature) so that they can carry out tasks such as crop care or selective harvesting with minimum human supervision. It is commonly observed that rapid change in terrain conditions can jeopardize the performance and efficiency of a robot when performing agricultural activity. For instance, a terrain covered with gravel produces high vibration to robot when traversing on the surface. In this work, an agricultural robot is embedded with machine learning algorithm based on Support Vector Machine (SVM). The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Support Vector Machine in recognizing different terrain conditions in an agriculture field. A test bed equipped with a tracked-driven robot and three types o f terrain i.e. sand, gravel and vegetation has been developed. A small and low power MEMS accelerometer is integrated into the robot for measuring the vertical acceleration. In this experiment, the vibration signals resulted from the interaction between the robot and the different type of terrain were collected. An extensive experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of SVM. The results in terms of accuracy of two machine learning techniques based on terrain classification are analyzed and compared. The results show that the robot that is equipped with an SVM can recognize different terrain conditions effectively. Such capability enables the robot to traverse across changing terrain conditions without being trapped in the field. Hence, this research work contributes to develop a self-adaptive agricultural robot in coping with different terrain conditions with minimum human supervision

    Epoxy resins show a combination of thermal stability, good mechanical performance, and durability, which make these materials suitable for many applications in the Aerospace industry. Different types of curing agents can be utilized for curing epoxy systems. The use of aliphatic amines as curing agent is preferable over the toxic aromatic ones, though their incorporation increases the flammability of the resin. Recently, we have developed different hybrid strategies, where the sol-gel technique has been exploited in combination with two DOPO-based flame retardants and other synergists or the use of humic acid and ammonium polyphosphate to achieve non-dripping V-0 classification in UL 94 vertical flame spread tests, with low phosphorous loadings (e.g., 1-2 wt%). These strategies improved the flame retardancy of the epoxy matrix, without any detrimental impact on the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites. Finally, the formation of a hybrid silica-epoxy network accounted for the establishment of tailored interphases, due to a better dispersion of more polar additives in the hydrophobic resin

    Machine learning in sustainable ship design and operation: a review

    The shipping industry faces a large challenge as it needs to significantly lower the amounts of Green House Gas emissions. Traditionally, reducing the fuel consumption for ships has been achieved during the design stage and, after building a ship, through optimisation of ship operations. In recent years, ship efficiency improvements using Machine Learning (ML) methods are quickly progressing, facilitated by available data from remote sensing, experiments and high-fidelity simulations. The data have been successfully applied to extract intricate empirical rules that can reduce emissions thereby helping achieve green shipping. This article presents an overview of applying ML techniques to enhance ships’ sustainability. The work covers the ML fundamentals and applications in relevant areas: ship design, operational performance, and voyage planning. Suitable ML approaches are analysed and compared on a scenario basis, with their space for improvements also discussed. Meanwhile, a reminder is given that ML has many inherent uncertainties and hence should be used with caution
