    Resource allocation in disaggregated optical networks

    The recently introduced disaggregation model is gaining interest due to its benefits when compared with traditional models.In essence, it consists on the separation of traditional hardware appliances (e.g. servers, network nodes) into commodity components, which then are mounted independently for their exploitation into customized physical infrastructures. Such an approach allows telecommunication operators and service providers to appropriately size their infrastructure and grow as needed. One of the main key benefits of the disaggregation model is the break of the vendor lock-in, pushing towards interoperability between equipment from different vendor with minimum standardization of software and hardware specifications, allowing operators to build the best solutions for their needs. Moreover, efficient scaling is also an important benefit introduced by the disaggregation approach. Due to these benefits, among others, the disaggregation model is gaining momentum and is being adopted into multiple fields and domains of nowadays telecom infrastructures. In this regard, the scenario under study of this master thesis focuses on disaggregated optical transport networks. Disaggregation allows for more open and customized optical networks, reducing both capital and operational expenditures for infrastructure owners.However, despite of these positive aspects, disaggregated optical networks face several challenges, beingthe degradation of the network performance when compared to traditional integrated solutions the most important one. In this regard, this thesis investigates the impact of disaggregation in optical networks and investigates regeneration as a potential solution to compensate the performances’ degradation.     Fluid flow queue models for fixed-mobile network evaluation

    A methodology for fast and accurate end-to-end KPI, like throughput and delay, estimation is proposed based on the service-centric traffic flow analysis and the fluid flow queuing model named CURSA-SQ. Mobile network features, like shared medium and mobility, are considered defining the models to be taken into account such as the propagation models and the fluid flow scheduling model. The developed methodology provides accurate computation of these KPIs, while performing orders of magnitude faster than discrete event simulators like ns-3. Finally, this methodology combined to its capacity for performance estimation in MPLS networks enables its application for near real-time converged fixed-mobile networks operation as it is proven in three use case scenarios

    ACINO: Second year report on dissemination and communication activities

    This ACINO deliverable presents the communication and dissemination activities performed by the consortium during the first two years of the project. We have communicated using our website, Twitter account and by various communication actions: The website saw over 3000 unique visitors during the first year and over 4000 during the second year; The consortium Twitter account had 49 followers at the end of the first year and 80 at the end of the second year. We posted 50 tweets during the first year and 40 more during the second year; We also held a press release and an interview in a magazine during the first year, and had three more similar communication actions during the second year. The dissemination activities have been composed of participation in public events where the goals and concepts of ACINO were presented via publications, presentation, workshops, courses and demonstrations. Overall, over forty different dissemination activities have been performed: An article has been published in peer-reviewed, open access Journal of Green Engineering; Eighteen articles have been published in conferences: four during the first year and fourteen during the second. One of them was a post-deadline and six were invited papers; We have co-organised three workshops: the Workshop on Network Function Virtualization and Programmable Networks at EUCNC 2015, the first Workshop on Multi-Layer Network Orchestration (NetOrch) at ICTON 2016 and the stand-alone ONOS/CORD workshop; We have held 16 talks, tutorial, courses and demonstrations; Consortium members have won two prizes for work related to ACINO: a team of developers won the 3rd prize of the ONOS Build Hackathon, and Telefónica won the Best SDN-NFV solution award at the LTE and 5G World conference by presenting a solution in which Sedona Systems was involved; We have contributed to six IETF standardisation documents and done some implementation and test of these standards. We have contributed to two open source projects: the NetPhony and ONOS controllers, with the implementation of main features being accepted and merged to the core code of these open source projects. Finally, the project has devised detailed plans for its dissemination activities for the last year of the project. We have: Confirmed plans for the organisation of a workshop, the second edition of the NetOrch workshop, co-located with the ICTON conference; A solid plan for continued dissemination in conferences (already five accepted conference papers, five talk invitations and a list of conferences of interest) and in peer-reviewed journals, with one article accepted for publication in the Journal of Lightwave Technology, two articles under review and plans for four more; Some more planned contribution to open source projects

    Solution strategies of service fulfilment Operation Support Systems for Next Generation Networks

    Suomalainen operatiivisten tukijärjestelmien toimittaja tarjoaa ratkaisuja palvelujen aktivointiin, verkkoresurssien hallintaan ja laskutustietojen keruuseen. Nämä ratkaisut ovat pääosin käytössä langattomissa verkoissa. Tässä tutkimuksessa arvioidaan kyseisten ratkaisujen soveltuvuutta palvelutoimitusprosessien automatisointiin tulevaisuuden verkkoympäristöissä. Tarkastelun kohteena ovat runko- ja pääsyverkkojen kiinteät teknologiat, joiden suosio saavuttaa huippunsa seuraavan 5-10 vuoden aikana. Näissä verkoissa palvelujen, kuten yritys-VPN:n tai kuluttajan laajakaistan, aktivointi vaatii monimutkaisen toimitusprosessin, jonka tueksi tarvitaan ensiluokkaista tukijärjestelmää. Teknologiakatsauksen jälkeen tutkimuksessa verrataan viitteellistä tuoteportfoliota saatavilla oleviin operatiivisten tukijärjestelmien arkkitehtuurisiin viitekehyksiin, ja analysoidaan sen soveltuvuus tulevaisuuden verkkoympäristöjen palvelutoimitusprosessin automatisointiin. Myös palvelutoimitusprosessien automatisointiin soveltuvien tukijärjestelmien markkinatilanne arvioidaan, ja tämän perusteella tutkitaan optimaalisinta sovellusstrategiaa. Lopulta voidaan päätellä, että tuoteportfoliolle parhaiten soveltuvin sovellusalue on kuluttajan laajakaistan, ja siihen liittyvien kehittyneempien IP-palveluiden palvelutoimitusprosessien automatisointi.A Finnish Operation Support Systems (OSS) vendor provides solutions for service activation, network inventory and event mediation. These solutions have mostly been deployed in mobile environments. In this thesis it will be studied how feasible it is to use similar solutions for service fulfilment in Next Generation Networks (NGN). NGN is a broad term that describes some key architectural evolutions in telecommunication core and access networks that will be deployed over the next 5 to 10 years. In these networks service, e.g. Triple Play or Virtual Private Network (VPN), activations require an extensive service fulfilment process that must be supported by first-class OSS. After introducing the NGN technologies, the research compares a reference product portfolio to available service fulfilment frameworks and evaluates the applicability. The study analyses the current state of service fulfilment OSS markets and evaluates various solution strategies. Eventually it will be concluded that the most interesting and adequate solution scenario is residential broadband, including value-added IP services

    Optical frequency comb source for next generation access networks

    The exponential growth of converged telecommunication services and the increasing demands for video rich multimedia applications have triggered the vast development of optical access technology to resolve the capacity bottleneck at metropolitan-access aggregations. To further enhance overall performance, next generation optical access networks will require highly efficient wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology beyond the capability of current standard time division multiplexed (TDM) systems. The successful implementation of future-proof WDM access networks depends on advancements in high performance transmission schemes as well as economical and practical electronic/photonic devices. This thesis focuses on an investigation of the use of optical frequency comb sources, and spectrally efficient modulation formats, in high capacity WDM based optical access networks. A novel injected gain switched comb generation technique which deliver simplicity, reliability, and cost effectiveness has been proposed and verified through experimental work. In addition, a detailed characterization of the optical comb source has been undertaken with special attention on the phase noise property of the comb lines. The potential of the injected gain switched comb source is then demonstrated in a digital coherent receiver based long reach WDM access scenario, which intends to facilitate 10 - 40 Gbit/s data delivery per channel . Furthermore, an optical scalar transmission scheme enabling the direct detection of higher order modulation format signals has been proposed and experimentally investigated
