Experimental investigation of the radial structure of energetic particle driven modes
Alfv\'en eigenmodes (AEs) and energetic particle modes (EPMs) are often
excited by energetic particles (EPs) in tokamak plasmas. One of the main open
questions concerning EP driven instabilities is the non-linear evolution of the
mode structure. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the properties
of beta-induced AEs (BAEs) and EP driven geodesic acoustic modes (EGAMs)
observed in the ramp-up phase of off-axis NBI heated ASDEX Upgrade (AUG)
discharges. This paper focuses on the changes in the mode structure of
BAEs/EGAMs during the non-linear chirping phase. Our investigation has shown
that in case of the observed down-chirping BAEs the changes in the radial
structure are smaller than the uncertainty of our measurement. This behaviour
is most probably the consequence of that BAEs are normal modes, thus their
radial structure strongly depends on the background plasma parameters rather
than on the EP distribution. In the case of rapidly upward chirping EGAMs the
analysis consistently shows shrinkage of the mode structure. The proposed
explanation is that the resonance in the velocity space moves towards more
passing particles which have narrower orbit widths.Comment: submitted to Nuclear Fusio
Perfect Transfer of Arbitrary States in Quantum Spin Networks
We propose a class of qubit networks that admit perfect state transfer of any
two-dimensional quantum state in a fixed period of time. We further show that
such networks can distribute arbitrary entangled states between two distant
parties, and can, by using such systems in parallel, transmit the higher
dimensional systems states across the network. Unlike many other schemes for
quantum computation and communication, these networks do not require qubit
couplings to be switched on and off. When restricted to -qubit spin networks
of identical qubit couplings, we show that is the maximal perfect
communication distance for hypercube geometries. Moreover, if one allows fixed
but different couplings between the qubits then perfect state transfer can be
achieved over arbitrarily long distances in a linear chain. This paper expands

Solving the Klein-Gordon equation using Fourier spectral methods: A benchmark test for computer performance
The cubic Klein-Gordon equation is a simple but non-trivial partial
differential equation whose numerical solution has the main building blocks
required for the solution of many other partial differential equations. In this
study, the library 2DECOMP&FFT is used in a Fourier spectral scheme to solve
the Klein-Gordon equation and strong scaling of the code is examined on
thirteen different machines for a problem size of 512^3. The results are useful
in assessing likely performance of other parallel fast Fourier transform based
programs for solving partial differential equations. The problem is chosen to
be large enough to solve on a workstation, yet also of interest to solve
quickly on a supercomputer, in particular for parametric studies. Unlike other
high performance computing benchmarks, for this problem size, the time to
solution will not be improved by simply building a bigger supercomputer.Comment: 10 page
The role of human body movements in mate selection
It is common scientific knowledge, that most of what we say within a conversation is not only expressed by the words meaning alone, but also through our gestures, postures, and body movements. This non-verbal mode is possibly rooted firmly in our human evolutionary heritage, and as such, some scientists argue that it serves as a fundamental assessment and expression tool for our inner qualities. Studies of nonverbal communication have established that a universal, culture-free, non-verbal sign system exists, that is available to all individuals for negotiating social encounters. Thus, it is not only the kind of gestures and expressions humans use in social communication, but also the way these movements are performed, as this seems to convey key information about an individuals quality. Dance, for example, is a special form of movement, which can be observed in human courtship displays. Recent research suggests that people are sensitive to the variation in dance movements, and that dance performance provides information about an individuals mate quality in terms of health and strength. This article reviews the role of body movement in human non-verbal communication, and highlights its significance in human mate preferences in order to promote future work in this research area within the evolutionary psychology framework
