Bibliometric Mapping of the Computational Intelligence Field
In this paper, a bibliometric study of the computational intelligence field is presented. Bibliometric maps showing the associations between the main concepts in the field are provided for the periods 1996–2000 and 2001–2005. Both the current structure of the field and the evolution of the field over the last decade are analyzed. In addition, a number of emerging areas in the field are identified. It turns out that computational intelligence can best be seen as a field that is structured around four important types of problems, namely control problems, classification problems, regression problems, and optimization problems. Within the computational intelligence field, the neural networks and fuzzy systems subfields are fairly intertwined, whereas the evolutionary computation subfield has a relatively independent position.neural networks;bibliometric mapping;fuzzy systems;bibliometrics;computational intelligence;evolutionary computation
Organic Selection and Social Heredity: The Original Baldwin Effect Revisited
The so-called “Baldwin Effect” has been studied for years
in the fields of Artificial Life, Cognitive Science, and Evolutionary
Theory across disciplines. This idea is often conflated
with genetic assimilation, and has raised controversy
in trans-disciplinary scientific discourse due to the many interpretations
it has. This paper revisits the “Baldwin Effect”
in Baldwin’s original spirit from a joint historical, theoretical
and experimental approach. Social Heredity – the inheritance
of cultural knowledge via non-genetic means in Baldwin’s
term – is also taken into consideration. I shall argue that the
Baldwin Effect can occur via social heredity without necessity
for genetic assimilation. Computational experiments are
carried out to show that when social heredity is permitted with
high fidelity, there is no need for the assimilation of acquired
characteristics; instead the Baldwin Effect occurs as promoting
more plasticity to facilitate future intelligence. The role
of mind and intelligence in evolution and its implications in
an extended synthesis of evolution are briefly discussed
From the social learning theory to a social learning algorithm for global optimization
Traditionally, the Evolutionary Computation (EC) paradigm is inspired by Darwinian evolution or the swarm intelligence of animals. Bandura's Social Learning Theory pointed out that the social learning behavior of humans indicates a high level of intelligence in nature. We found that such intelligence of human society can be implemented by numerical computing and be utilized in computational algorithms for solving optimization problems. In this paper, we design a novel and generic optimization approach that mimics the social learning process of humans. Emulating the observational learning and reinforcement behaviors, a virtual society deployed in the algorithm seeks the strongest behavioral patterns with the best outcome. This corresponds to searching for the best solution in solving optimization problems. Experimental studies in this paper showed the appealing search behavior of this human intelligence-inspired approach, which can reach the global optimum even in ill conditions. The effectiveness and high efficiency of the proposed algorithm has further been verified by comparing to some representative EC algorithms and variants on a set of benchmarks
Cognition as Embodied Morphological Computation
Cognitive science is considered to be the study of mind (consciousness and thought) and intelligence in humans. Under such definition variety of unsolved/unsolvable problems appear. This article argues for a broad understanding of cognition based on empirical results from i.a. natural sciences, self-organization, artificial intelligence and artificial life, network science and neuroscience, that apart from the high level mental activities in humans, includes sub-symbolic and sub-conscious processes, such as emotions, recognizes cognition in other living beings as well as extended and distributed/social cognition. The new idea of cognition as complex multiscale phenomenon evolved in living organisms based on bodily structures that process information, linking cognitivists and EEEE (embodied, embedded, enactive, extended) cognition approaches with the idea of morphological computation (info-computational self-organisation) in cognizing agents, emerging in evolution through interactions of a (living/cognizing) agent with the environment
Evolving Gene Regulatory Networks with Mobile DNA Mechanisms
This paper uses a recently presented abstract, tuneable Boolean regulatory
network model extended to consider aspects of mobile DNA, such as transposons.
The significant role of mobile DNA in the evolution of natural systems is
becoming increasingly clear. This paper shows how dynamically controlling
network node connectivity and function via transposon-inspired mechanisms can
be selected for in computational intelligence tasks to give improved
performance. The designs of dynamical networks intended for implementation
within the slime mould Physarum polycephalum and for the distributed control of

Visualisation of advanced search
This article presents investigation on visualisation of
search processes. Existing evolutionary and adaptive
algorithms for search and optimisation, in certain
extent, may differ from each other in behaviour and in
obtained results. An intention for future analysis of
search algorithms, their behaviour and differences
motivates the development of tools for visual
representation of the search process. By developing a
3D graphical interface for Computational Intelligence
Software such as Free Search [1] [2], Particle Swarm
Optimisation [3], Differential Evolution [4] and
Genetic Algorithm [5] [6] it is possible to build a
scene with test function and individuals, moving on
the landscape of that test function towards their goals
Computational and Robotic Models of Early Language Development: A Review
We review computational and robotics models of early language learning and
development. We first explain why and how these models are used to understand
better how children learn language. We argue that they provide concrete
theories of language learning as a complex dynamic system, complementing
traditional methods in psychology and linguistics. We review different modeling
formalisms, grounded in techniques from machine learning and artificial
intelligence such as Bayesian and neural network approaches. We then discuss
their role in understanding several key mechanisms of language development:
cross-situational statistical learning, embodiment, situated social
interaction, intrinsically motivated learning, and cultural evolution. We
conclude by discussing future challenges for research, including modeling of
large-scale empirical data about language acquisition in real-world
environments.
