    Low-cost programmable battery dischargers and application in battery model identification

    This paper describes a study where a low-cost programmable battery discharger was built from basic electronic components, the popular MATLAB programming environment, and an low-cost Arduino microcontroller board. After its components and their function are explained in detail, a case study is performed to evaluate the discharger's performance. The setup is principally suitable for any type of battery cell or small packs. Here a 7.2 V NiMH battery pack including six cells is used. Consecutive discharge current pulses are applied and the terminal voltage is measured as the output. With the measured data, battery model identification is performed using a simple equivalent circuit model containing the open circuit voltage and the internal resistance. The identification results are then tested by repeating similar tests. Consistent results demonstrate accuracy of the identified battery parameters, which also confirms the quality of the measurement. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the identification method is fast enough to be used in real-time applications

    State of charge estimation based on a modified extended Kalman filter

    The global transition from fossil-based automobile systems to their electric-driven counterparts has made the use of a storage device inevitable. Owing to its high energy density, lower self-discharge, and higher cycle lifetime the lithium-ion battery is of significant consideration and usage in electric vehicles. Nevertheless, the state of charge (SOC) of the battery, which cannot be measured directly, must be calculated using an estimator. This paper proposes, by means of a modified priori estimate and a compensating proportional gain, an improved extended Kalman filter (IEKF) for the estimation task due to its nonlinear application and adaptiveness to noise. The improvement was achieved by incorporating the residuals of the previous state matrices to the current state predictor and introducing an attenuating factor in the Kalman gain, which was chosen to counteract the effect of the measurement and process noise resulting in better accuracy performance than the conventional SOC curve fitting-based estimation and ampere hour methods. Simulation results show that the standard EKF estimator results in performance with an error bound of 12.9% due to an unstable start, while the modified EKF reduces the maximum error to within 2.05% demonstrating the quality of the estimator

    State of charge estimation framework for lithium‐ion batteries based on square root cubature Kalman filter under wide operation temperature range

    Due to the significant influence of temperature on battery charging and discharging performance, exact evaluation of state of charge (SOC) under complex temperature environment becomes increasingly important. This paper develops an advanced framework to estimate the SOC for lithium‐ion batteries with consideration of temperature variation. First, an accurate electrical model with wide temperature compensation is established, and a series of experiments are carried out under wide range time‐varying temperature from −20°C to 60°C. Then, the genetic algorithm is leveraged to identify the temperature‐dependent model parameters. On this basis, the battery SOC is accurately estimated based on the square root cubature Kalman filter algorithm. Finally, the availability of the proposed method at different temperatures is validated through a complicated mixed working cycle test, and the experimental results manifest that the devised framework can accurately evaluate SOC under wide time‐varying temperature range with the maximum error of less than 2%

    Kalman filter applied to Thevenin’s modeling of a lead-acid battery

    This article determines the internal parameters of a battery analyzed from its circuit equivalent, reviewing important information that can help to identify the battery’s state of charge (SOC) and its state of health (SOH). Although models that allow the dynamics of different types of batteries to be identified have been developed, few have defined the lead-acid battery model from the analysis of a filtered signal by applying a Kalman filter, particularly taking into account the measurement of noise not just at signal output but also at its input (this is a novelty raised from the experimental). This study proposes a model for lead-acid batteries using tools such as MATLAB® and Simulink®. First, a method of filtering the input and output signal is presented, and then a method for identifying parameters from 29 charge states is used for a lead-acid battery. Different SOCs are related to different values of open circuit voltage (OCV). Ultimately, improvements in model estimation are shown using a filter that considers system and sensor noise since the modeled and filtered signal is closer to the original signal than the unfiltered modeled signal
