    A Finite Element-Inspired Hypergraph Neural Network: Application to Fluid Dynamics Simulations

    An emerging trend in deep learning research focuses on the applications of graph neural networks (GNNs) for mesh-based continuum mechanics simulations. Most of these learning frameworks operate on graphs wherein each edge connects two nodes. Inspired by the data connectivity in the finite element method, we present a method to construct a hypergraph by connecting the nodes by elements rather than edges. A hypergraph message-passing network is defined on such a node-element hypergraph that mimics the calculation process of local stiffness matrices. We term this method a finite element-inspired hypergraph neural network, in short FEIH(ϕ\phi)-GNN. We further equip the proposed network with rotation equivariance, and explore its capability for modeling unsteady fluid flow systems. The effectiveness of the network is demonstrated on two common benchmark problems, namely the fluid flow around a circular cylinder and airfoil configurations. Stabilized and accurate temporal roll-out predictions can be obtained using the ϕ\phi-GNN framework within the interpolation Reynolds number range. The network is also able to extrapolate moderately towards higher Reynolds number domain out of the training range

    Elite perceptions of the Victorian and Edwardian past in inter-war England

    It is often argued by historians that members of the cultivated Elite after 1918 rejected the pre-war past. or at least subjected it to severe denigration. This thesis sets out to challenge such a view. Above all, it argues that inter-war critics of the Victorian and Edwardian past were unable to reject it even if that was what they felt inclined to do. This was because they were tied to those periods by the affective links of memory, family, and the continually unfolding consequences of the past in the present. Even the severest critics of the pre-war world, such as Lytton Strachey, were less frequently dismissive of history than ambivalent towards it. This ambivalence, it is argued, helped to keep the past alive and often to humanise it. The thesis also explores more positive estimation of Victorian and Edwardian history between the wars. It examines nostalgia for the past, as well as instances of continuity of practice and attitude. It explores the way in which inter-war society drew upon aspects of Victorian and Edwardian history both as illuminating parallels to contemporary affairs and to understand directly why the present was shaped as it was. Again, this testifies to the enduring power of the past after 1918. There are three parts to this thesis. Part One outlines the cultural context in which writers contemplated the Victorian and Edwardian past. Part Two explores some of the ways in which history was written about and used by inter-war society.     The Vietnam War was unique among American wars. To pinpoint its uniqueness, it was necessary to look for a non-American voice that would enable me to articulate its distinctiveness and explore the American character as observed by an Asian. Takeshi Kaiko proved to be most helpful. From his novel, Into a Black Sun, I was able to establish a working pair of 'bookends' from which to approach the poetry of Walter McDonald, Bruce Weigl, Basil T. Paquet and Steve Mason. Chapter One is devoted to those seemingly mismatched 'bookends,' Walt Whitman and General William C. Westmoreland, and their respective anthropocentric and technocentric visions of progress and the peculiarly American concept of the "open road" as they manifest themselves in Vietnam. In Chapter, Two, I analyze the war poems of Walter McDonald. As a pilot, writing primarily about flying, his poetry manifests General Westmoreland's technocentric vision of the 'road' as determined by and manifest through technology. Chapter Three focuses on the poems of Bruce Weigl. The poems analyzed portray the literal and metaphorical descent from the technocentric, 'numbed' distance of aerial warfare to the world of ground warfare, and the initiation of a 'fucking new guy,' who discovers the contours of the self's interior through a set of experiences that lead from from aerial insertion into the jungle to the degradation of burning human feces. Chapter Four, devoted to the thirteen poems of Basil T. Paquet, focuses on the continuation of the descent begun in Chapter Two. In his capacity as a medic, Paquet's entire body of poems details his quotidian tasks which entail tending the maimed, the mortally wounded and the dead. The final chapter deals with Steve Mason's JohnnY's Song, and his depiction of the plight of Vietnam veterans back in "The World" who are still trapped inside the interior landscape of their individual "ghettoes" of the soul created by their war-time experiences

    Estudo da remodelagem reversa miocárdica através da análise proteómica do miocárdio e do líquido pericárdico

    Valve replacement remains as the standard therapeutic option for aortic stenosis patients, aiming at abolishing pressure overload and triggering myocardial reverse remodeling. However, despite the instant hemodynamic benefit, not all patients show complete regression of myocardial hypertrophy, being at higher risk for adverse outcomes, such as heart failure. The current comprehension of the biological mechanisms underlying an incomplete reverse remodeling is far from complete. Furthermore, definitive prognostic tools and ancillary therapies to improve the outcome of the patients undergoing valve replacement are missing. To help abridge these gaps, a combined myocardial (phospho)proteomics and pericardial fluid proteomics approach was followed, taking advantage of human biopsies and pericardial fluid collected during surgery and whose origin anticipated a wealth of molecular information contained therein. From over 1800 and 750 proteins identified, respectively, in the myocardium and in the pericardial fluid of aortic stenosis patients, a total of 90 dysregulated proteins were detected. Gene annotation and pathway enrichment analyses, together with discriminant analysis, are compatible with a scenario of increased pro-hypertrophic gene expression and protein synthesis, defective ubiquitinproteasome system activity, proclivity to cell death (potentially fed by complement activity and other extrinsic factors, such as death receptor activators), acute-phase response, immune system activation and fibrosis. Specific validation of some targets through immunoblot techniques and correlation with clinical data pointed to complement C3 β chain, Muscle Ring Finger protein 1 (MuRF1) and the dual-specificity Tyr-phosphorylation regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) as potential markers of an incomplete response. In addition, kinase prediction from phosphoproteome data suggests that the modulation of casein kinase 2, the family of IκB kinases, glycogen synthase kinase 3 and DYRK1A may help improve the outcome of patients undergoing valve replacement. Particularly, functional studies with DYRK1A+/- cardiomyocytes show that this kinase may be an important target to treat cardiac dysfunction, provided that mutant cells presented a different response to stretch and reduced ability to develop force (active tension). This study opens many avenues in post-aortic valve replacement reverse remodeling research. In the future, gain-of-function and/or loss-of-function studies with isolated cardiomyocytes or with animal models of aortic bandingdebanding will help disclose the efficacy of targeting the surrogate therapeutic targets. Besides, clinical studies in larger cohorts will bring definitive proof of complement C3, MuRF1 and DYRK1A prognostic value.A substituição da válvula aórtica continua a ser a opção terapêutica de referência para doentes com estenose aórtica e visa a eliminação da sobrecarga de pressão, desencadeando a remodelagem reversa miocárdica. Contudo, apesar do benefício hemodinâmico imediato, nem todos os pacientes apresentam regressão completa da hipertrofia do miocárdio, ficando com maior risco de eventos adversos, como a insuficiência cardíaca. Atualmente, os mecanismos biológicos subjacentes a uma remodelagem reversa incompleta ainda não são claros. Além disso, não dispomos de ferramentas de prognóstico definitivos nem de terapias auxiliares para melhorar a condição dos pacientes indicados para substituição da válvula. Para ajudar a resolver estas lacunas, uma abordagem combinada de (fosfo)proteómica e proteómica para a caracterização, respetivamente, do miocárdio e do líquido pericárdico foi seguida, tomando partido de biópsias e líquidos pericárdicos recolhidos em ambiente cirúrgico. Das mais de 1800 e 750 proteínas identificadas, respetivamente, no miocárdio e no líquido pericárdico dos pacientes com estenose aórtica, um total de 90 proteínas desreguladas foram detetadas. As análises de anotação de genes, de enriquecimento de vias celulares e discriminativa corroboram um cenário de aumento da expressão de genes pro-hipertróficos e de síntese proteica, um sistema ubiquitina-proteassoma ineficiente, uma tendência para morte celular (potencialmente acelerada pela atividade do complemento e por outros fatores extrínsecos que ativam death receptors), com ativação da resposta de fase aguda e do sistema imune, assim como da fibrose. A validação de alguns alvos específicos através de immunoblot e correlação com dados clínicos apontou para a cadeia β do complemento C3, a Muscle Ring Finger protein 1 (MuRF1) e a dual-specificity Tyr-phosphoylation regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) como potenciais marcadores de uma resposta incompleta. Por outro lado, a predição de cinases a partir do fosfoproteoma, sugere que a modulação da caseína cinase 2, a família de cinases do IκB, a glicogénio sintase cinase 3 e da DYRK1A pode ajudar a melhorar a condição dos pacientes indicados para intervenção. Em particular, a avaliação funcional de cardiomiócitos DYRK1A+/- mostraram que esta cinase pode ser um alvo importante para tratar a disfunção cardíaca, uma vez que os miócitos mutantes responderam de forma diferente ao estiramento e mostraram uma menor capacidade para desenvolver força (tensão ativa). Este estudo levanta várias hipóteses na investigação da remodelagem reversa. No futuro, estudos de ganho e/ou perda de função realizados em cardiomiócitos isolados ou em modelos animais de banding-debanding da aorta ajudarão a testar a eficácia de modular os potenciais alvos terapêuticos encontrados.     The Disputation: The Enduring Representations in William Holman Hunt's “The Finding of the Saviour in the Temple,” 1860

    This interdisciplinary thesis problematizes the Jewish presence in the painting The Finding of the Saviour in the Temple (1860) by William Holman Hunt. This “Jewish presence” refers to characters within the painting, Jews who posed for the picture and the painting’s portrayal of Judaism. The thesis takes a phenomenological and hermeneutical approach to The Finding providing careful description and interpretation of what appears in the painting. It situates the painting within a newly configured genre of disputation paintings depicting the Temple scene from the Gospel of Luke (2:47 – 52). It asks two questions. Why does The Finding look the way it does? And how did Holman Hunt know how to create the picture? Under the rubric of the first question, it explores and challenges customary accounts of the painting, explicitly challenging the over reliance upon F.G. Stephens’s pamphlet. Additionally, it examines Pre-Raphaelite and Victorian religious contexts and bringing hitherto unacknowledged artistic contexts to the fore. The second question examines less apparent influences through an analysis of the originary Lukan narrative in conjunction with the under-examined genre of Temple “disputation” paintings, and a legacy of scholarly and religious disputation. This demonstrates a discourse of disputation informing The Finding over and above the biblical narrative. In showing that this discourse strongly correlates with the painting’s objectifying and spectacular properties, this thesis provides a new way to understand The Finding’s orientalism which is further revealed in its typological critical reworking of two Christian medieval and renaissance paintings. As a demonstration of the discourse, the thesis includes an examination of Jewish artists who addressed the theme of disputation overtly or obliquely thereby engaging with and challenging the assumptions upon which the disputation rests

    Metaphors of London fog, smoke and mist in Victorian and Edwardian Art and Literature

    Julian Wolfreys has argued that after 1850 writers employed stock images of the city without allowing them to transform their texts. This thesis argues, on the contrary, that metaphorical uses of London fog were complex and subtle during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, at least until 1914. Fog represented, in particular, formlessness and the dissolution of boundaries. Examining the idea of fog in literature, verse, newspaper accounts and journal articles, as well as in the visual arts, as part of a common discourse about London and the state of its inhabitants, this thesis charts how the metaphorical appropriation of this idea changed over time. Four of Dickens's novels are used to track his use of fog as part of a discourse of the natural and unnatural in individual and society, identifying it with London in progressively more negative terms. Visual representations of fog by Constable, Turner, Whistler, Monet, Markino, O'Connor, Roberts and Wyllie and Coburn showed an increasing readiness to engage with this discourse. Social tensions in the city in the 1880s were articulated in art as well as in fiction. Authors like Hay and Barr showed the destruction of London by its fog because of its inhabitants' supposed degeneracy. As the social threat receded, apocalyptic scenarios gave way to a more optimistic view in the work of Owen and others. Henry James used fog as a metaphorical representation of the boundaries of gendered behaviour in public, and the problems faced by women who crossed them. The dissertation also examines fog and individual transgression, in novels and short stories by Lowndes, Stevenson, Conan Doyle and Joseph Conrad. After 1914, fog was no more than a crude signifier of Victorian London in literature, film and, later, television, deployed as a cliche instead of the subtle metaphorical idea discussed in this thesis

    Building body identities - exploring the world of female bodybuilders

    This thesis explores how female bodybuilders seek to develop and maintain a viable sense of self despite being stigmatized by the gendered foundations of what Erving Goffman (1983) refers to as the 'interaction order'; the unavoidable presentational context in which identities are forged during the course of social life. Placed in the context of an overview of the historical treatment of women's bodies, and a concern with the development of bodybuilding as a specific form of body modification, the research draws upon a unique two year ethnographic study based in the South of England, complemented by interviews with twenty-six female bodybuilders, all of whom live in the U.K. By mapping these extraordinary women's lives, the research illuminates the pivotal spaces and essential lived experiences that make up the female bodybuilder. Whilst the women appear to be embarking on an 'empowering' radical body project for themselves, the consequences of their activity remains culturally ambivalent. This research exposes the 'Janus-faced' nature of female bodybuilding, exploring the ways in which the women negotiate, accommodate and resist pressures to engage in more orthodox and feminine activities and appearances

    Educating Sub-Saharan Africa:Assessing Mobile Application Use in a Higher Learning Engineering Programme

    In the institution where I teach, insufficient laboratory equipment for engineering education pushed students to learn via mobile phones or devices. Using mobile technologies to learn and practice is not the issue, but the more important question lies in finding out where and how they use mobile tools for learning. Through the lens of Kearney et al.’s (2012) pedagogical model, using authenticity, personalisation, and collaboration as constructs, this case study adopts a mixed-method approach to investigate the mobile learning activities of students and find out their experiences of what works and what does not work. Four questions are borne out of the over-arching research question, ‘How do students studying at a University in Nigeria perceive mobile learning in electrical and electronic engineering education?’ The first three questions are answered from qualitative, interview data analysed using thematic analysis. The fourth question investigates their collaborations on two mobile social networks using social network and message analysis. The study found how students’ mobile learning relates to the real-world practice of engineering and explained ways of adapting and overcoming the mobile tools’ limitations, and the nature of the collaborations that the students adopted, naturally, when they learn in mobile social networks. It found that mobile engineering learning can be possibly located in an offline mobile zone. It also demonstrates that investigating the effectiveness of mobile learning in the mobile social environment is possible by examining users’ interactions. The study shows how mobile learning personalisation that leads to impactful engineering learning can be achieved. The study shows how to manage most interface and technical challenges associated with mobile engineering learning and provides a new guide for educators on where and how mobile learning can be harnessed. And it revealed how engineering education can be successfully implemented through mobile tools

    Pocket size interactive films: Embedding the mobile devices’ features, characteristics and affordances into filmic interactive narratives.

    Throughout the history of interactive film, creators have experimented with different modes of interaction to allow for the viewers’ agency. As interactive films have not yet established a standardised form, projects have continually been shaped by new technology. Over time, viewers have shifted from the cinema, to televisions, the personal computer and recently the mobile device. These devices further extend the interactive capabilities that are at the creators’ disposal. Therefore, this thesis proposes that mobile devices could facilitate new forms of interactive film that make use of these features. This study investigates the integration of the mobile devices’ characteristics, features and affordances into an interactive film project that is both viewed and interacted with on a mobile device. First and foremost, it establishes whether the mobile device can be successfully used by authors to relay interactive films. Secondly, it gives insights into design considerations for authors that aim to make use of the mobile devices’ features. Additionally, the thesis gathers insights into the use of game-engine technology for developing similar interactive film projects. The research begins with a literature review establishing the historical and academic context in regards to interactive- films, narratives, and interfaces, thereby focussing on mobile devices. Consecutively, a selection of projects is surveyed to garner insights into the current state of the art. These sections are then used to inform the practice-based part of this thesis in which the production of an interactive film project will be comprehensively documented. A concurrent think-aloud usability test, accompanied by a reflection on the outcomes and production process will conclude the research. The outcome suggests that mobile devices can act as successful vessels for interactive narratives. However, usability tests as well as reflection reveal that the thesis project cannot be strictly classified as an interactive film. Therefore, suggestions for future research as well as insights into the retention of filmic quality can be made in retrospect. Additionally, The use of game-engines for interactive film authoring proves to allow creators rapid prototyping and ease of implementation.
