The Role of Maintenance and Facility Management in Logistics: A Literature Review
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to provide a literature review on the different ways of carrying out Facility Management and related topics in order to uncover that there is limited research regarding the impact of Facility Management on the logistics and operational performance of warehouses. Design/methodology/approach - Four different focus areas have been identified and for each one different methodologies and streams of research have been studied. Findings - The study underlines the importance of Facility Management for the logistics operations; therefore it supports the notion that investments aiming at preserving the status of the building and service components of warehouses are crucial. On the role of Prognostics and Health Management in advanced maintenance systems
The advanced use of the Information and Communication Technologies is evolving the way that systems are managed and maintained. A great number of techniques and methods have emerged in the light of these advances allowing to have an accurate and knowledge about the systems’ condition evolution and remaining useful life. The advances are recognized as outcomes of an innovative discipline, nowadays discussed under the term of Prognostics and Health Management (PHM). In order to analyze how maintenance will change by using PHM, a conceptual model is proposed built upon three views. The model highlights: (i) how PHM may impact the definition of maintenance policies; (ii) how PHM fits within the Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and (iii) how PHM can be integrated into Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) programs. A framework to review performance measurement systems.
This paper describes a structured review framework for managing business
performance. The framework entails the review of both business performance,
including thestrategic relevance of the measures, as well as the efficiency and
effectiveness of the performance measurement system itself. A range of
approaches and tools are employed in the framework which features a review card
providing a high level view of the review process, showing the different types
of review perspectives and their interactions
Supplier development practice: arising the problems of upstream delivery for a food distribution SME in the UK
The paper aims to emphasize on the impacts of the supplier development on reducing the defects in supplier quality for a food distribution small–medium sized enterprise (SME). An empirical study was conducted to measure the performance of the suppliers in three different key performance indicators of the outsourcing and supplier’s performance to arise the existing problems via information exchange, data collection and data analysis. It was found that supplier development through data and information exchange and better communication by any food distribution SME raises the problems more promptly. This can dramatically change the supplier’s behavior to improve the quality of the supplier’s service and products. It is suggested that more research is required to raise other key performance indicators and their related problems and to develop more improvement practices. Six sigma methodologies could be the potential good practices to be focused in future research studies. Supplier performance measurement, which encompasses data exchange and data collection, develops the systematic flow of information, which potentially improves the flow of goods and the whole food supply chain to address the final consumer satisfaction. The research took a novel approach in adopting some transport related key performance indicators of the food supply to the food distribution and retailing sector, which is almost a new approach in food industry
Applying performance measures to support decision-making in supply chain operations: a case of beverage industry
Performance measurement systems (PMS) have commonly been applied to evaluate and reward performances at
managerial levels, especially in the context of supply chain management. However, evidence suggests that the effective
use of PMS can also positively influence the behaviour and improve performance at an operational level. The motivation
is to accomplish organisational goals, namely to increase supply chain flexibility by responding to evermore-varying customer
demands in a timely manner. The purpose of the study described in this paper was to develop a conceptual framework
that adopts performance measures for ex-ante decision-making at an operational level within the supply chain. To
guide the research, five questions were asked and subsequently key gaps have been identified. In an attempt to fill the
gaps, a case study at a major global brand beverage company has been carried out, and as a result, a conceptual framework
of the PMS has been developed. Overall, the research offers a foundation of the applicability and impact of PMS
in the supply chain and provides a framework that attends to some of the potential uses of PMS that so far have not
been practically applied. The outcomes from the testing indicate that the initial gaps identified in the literature have been
addressed and that the framework is judicious with scope for practical applicability. The framework is deemed worthy of
further testing in different operational contexts of the supply chain
