Multi-Lane Perception Using Feature Fusion Based on GraphSLAM
An extensive, precise and robust recognition and modeling of the environment
is a key factor for next generations of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and
development of autonomous vehicles. In this paper, a real-time approach for the
perception of multiple lanes on highways is proposed. Lane markings detected by
camera systems and observations of other traffic participants provide the input
data for the algorithm. The information is accumulated and fused using
GraphSLAM and the result constitutes the basis for a multilane clothoid model.
To allow incorporation of additional information sources, input data is
processed in a generic format. Evaluation of the method is performed by
comparing real data, collected with an experimental vehicle on highways, to a
ground truth map. The results show that ego and adjacent lanes are robustly
detected with high quality up to a distance of 120 m. In comparison to serial
lane detection, an increase in the detection range of the ego lane and a
continuous perception of neighboring lanes is achieved. The method can
potentially be utilized for the longitudinal and lateral control of
self-driving vehicles
Guided patch-wise nonlocal SAR despeckling
We propose a new method for SAR image despeckling which leverages information
drawn from co-registered optical imagery. Filtering is performed by plain
patch-wise nonlocal means, operating exclusively on SAR data. However, the
filtering weights are computed by taking into account also the optical guide,
which is much cleaner than the SAR data, and hence more discriminative. To
avoid injecting optical-domain information into the filtered image, a
SAR-domain statistical test is preliminarily performed to reject right away any
risky predictor. Experiments on two SAR-optical datasets prove the proposed
method to suppress very effectively the speckle, preserving structural details,
and without introducing visible filtering artifacts. Overall, the proposed
method compares favourably with all state-of-the-art despeckling filters, and
also with our own previous optical-guided filter
Synthetic aperture radar/LANDSAT MSS image registration
Algorithms and procedures necessary to merge aircraft synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and LANDSAT multispectral scanner (MSS) imagery were determined. The design of a SAR/LANDSAT data merging system was developed. Aircraft SAR images were registered to the corresponding LANDSAT MSS scenes and were the subject of experimental investigations. Results indicate that the registration of SAR imagery with LANDSAT MSS imagery is feasible from a technical viewpoint, and useful from an information-content viewpoint
Eighth year projects and activities of the Environmental Remote Sensing Applications Laboratory (ERSAL)
Projects completed for the NASA Office of University Affairs include the application of remote sensing data in support of rehabilitation of wild fire damaged areas and the use of LANDSAT 3 return beam vidicon in forestry mapping applications. Continuing projects for that office include monitoring western Oregon timber clearcut; detecting and monitoring wheat disease; land use monitoring for tax assessment in Umatilla, Lake, and Morrow Counties; and the use of Oregon Air National Guard thermal infrared scanning data. Projects funded through other agencies include the remote sensing inventory of elk in the Blue Mountains; the estimation of burned agricultural acreage in the Willamette Valley; a resource inventory of Deschutes County; and hosting a LANDSAT digital workshop
A Comprehensive Survey of Deep Learning in Remote Sensing: Theories, Tools and Challenges for the Community
In recent years, deep learning (DL), a re-branding of neural networks (NNs),
has risen to the top in numerous areas, namely computer vision (CV), speech
recognition, natural language processing, etc. Whereas remote sensing (RS)
possesses a number of unique challenges, primarily related to sensors and
applications, inevitably RS draws from many of the same theories as CV; e.g.,
statistics, fusion, and machine learning, to name a few. This means that the RS
community should be aware of, if not at the leading edge of, of advancements
like DL. Herein, we provide the most comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art
RS DL research. We also review recent new developments in the DL field that can
be used in DL for RS. Namely, we focus on theories, tools and challenges for
the RS community. Specifically, we focus on unsolved challenges and
opportunities as it relates to (i) inadequate data sets, (ii)
human-understandable solutions for modelling physical phenomena, (iii) Big
Data, (iv) non-traditional heterogeneous data sources, (v) DL architectures and
learning algorithms for spectral, spatial and temporal data, (vi) transfer
learning, (vii) an improved theoretical understanding of DL systems, (viii)

Autonomous flight and remote site landing guidance research for helicopters
Automated low-altitude flight and landing in remote areas within a civilian environment are investigated, where initial cost, ongoing maintenance costs, and system productivity are important considerations. An approach has been taken which has: (1) utilized those technologies developed for military applications which are directly transferable to a civilian mission; (2) exploited and developed technology areas where new methods or concepts are required; and (3) undertaken research with the potential to lead to innovative methods or concepts required to achieve a manual and fully automatic remote area low-altitude and landing capability. The project has resulted in a definition of system operational concept that includes a sensor subsystem, a sensor fusion/feature extraction capability, and a guidance and control law concept. These subsystem concepts have been developed to sufficient depth to enable further exploration within the NASA simulation environment, and to support programs leading to the flight test
A preliminary experiment definition for video landmark acquisition and tracking
Six scientific objectives/experiments were derived which consisted of agriculture/forestry/range resources, land use, geology/mineral resources, water resources, marine resources and environmental surveys. Computer calculations were then made of the spectral radiance signature of each of 25 candidate targets as seen by a satellite sensor system. An imaging system capable of recognizing, acquiring and tracking specific generic type surface features was defined. A preliminary experiment definition and design of a video Landmark Acquisition and Tracking system is given. This device will search a 10-mile swath while orbiting the earth, looking for land/water interfaces such as coastlines and rivers

In its subject coverage, Aerospace Medicine and Biology concentrates on the biological, physiological, psychological, and environmental effects to which man is subjected during and following simulated or actual flight in the earth's atmosphere or in interplanetary space. References describing similar effects of biological organisms of lower order are also included. Emphasis is placed on applied research, but reference to fundamental studies and theoretical principles related to experimental development also qualify for inclusion. We do not intend this book to cover all aspects of remote sensing techniques and platforms, since it would be an impossible task for a single volume. Instead, we have collected a number of high-quality, original and representative contributions in those areas
