    In this paper the analysis of the spectrum occupancy in the TV band is provided based on the indoor and outdoor measurements campaigns carried out in Poznan, Poland, and Barcelona, Spain, in 2013. The goal of this work is to discuss the stability and other important features of the observed spectrum occupancy in the context of indoor/outdoor Radio Environment Maps database deployment. Reliable deployment of these databases seems to be one of the critical points in practical utilization of the TV White Spaces for cognitive purposes inside buildings and in densely populated cities.Postprint (published version

    The dynamic spectrum access (DSA) principle, relying on the cognitive radio (CR) paradigm, allows users to access spectrum over time intervals or spatial areas where it remains unused. Due to the opportunistic nature of DSA/CR, the behavior and performance of DSA/CR networks depends on the perceived spectrum usage pattern. An accurate modeling of spectrum occupancy therefore becomes essential in the context of DSA/CR. In this context, this paper addresses the problem of accurately modeling the spectrum occupancy pattern perceived by DSA/CR users in the spatial domain. A novel spatial modeling approach is introduced to enable a simple yet practical and accurate characterization of spectrum. First, a set of models is proposed to characterize and predict the average level of occupancy perceived by DSA/CR users at various locations based on the knowledge of some simple signal parameters. An extension is then proposed to characterize not only the average occupancy level but the instantaneous channel state perceived simultaneously by DSA/CR users observing the same transmitter from different locations as well. The validity and accuracy of the theoretical models are demonstrated with results from an extensive spectrum measurement campaign. Some illustrative examples of their potential applicability are presented and discussed as well

    A survey of measurement-based spectrum occupancy modeling for cognitive radios

    Spectrum occupancy models are very useful in cognitive radio designs. They can be used to increase spectrum sensing accuracy for more reliable operation, to remove spectrum sensing for higher resource usage efficiency, or to select channels for better opportunistic access, among other applications. In this survey, various spectrum occupancy models from measurement campaigns taken around the world are investigated. These models extract different statistical properties of the spectrum occupancy from the measured data. In addition to these models, spectrum occupancy prediction is also discussed, where autoregressive and/or moving-average models are used to predict the channel status at future time instants. After comparing these different methods and models, several challenges are also summarized based on this survey

    Empirical Study on Performance Evaluation Between Long Term Evolution (LTE), Third Generation (3G) and TV White Space Availability for Wireless Campus Network

    Abstract—University campuses are increasingly relying on wireless communication as the preferred media to access the web. Hence, there is a need to conduct on site performance evaluation on the existing wireless standards with the view of analyzing their expected and actual performance. In this paper, a drive-test was performed on three (3) wireless standards of LTE Release 8, 3G and Television White Space (TVWS). The drive-test was performed in both in-building and outdoor environments in a sub-urban campus settings. Results from LTE Release 8, 3G indicate that user mobility affects the received user throughput and Reference Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). The test cases are executed by using a real LTE user equipment, equipped with ASCOM’s TEMS software on a live 3G and 4G mobile networks for the both Malaysian mobile service providers; Maxis and Celcom. The results showed sufficient coverage within the campus area from both operators. On the other hand, results from field experiment indicate that TVWS is available on the campus. TVWS presents significant new opportunities within the context of emerging 4G networks for deploying new wireless access technology capable of meeting students expectation in terms of throughput and increasing broadband access for the fraction when the legacy 4G networks experience coverage blackout

    Application of radio environment maps for dynamic broadband access in TV bands in urban areas

    Spectrum sharing based on the dedicated databases, particularly in the context of TV band, is widely considered as a promising tool for better spectrum utilization in the future wireless networks. Practical realization of this paradigm entails the need for the true protection of the incumbent system, and at the same time the guarantee of the quality of the services offered to the secondary users. In this respect, this papers discusses the results achieved in numerous measurement campaigns performed for last years in two European cities, i.e., Poznan, Poland and Barcelona, Spain. Both indoor and outdoor measurements of the TV band have been compared with the main purpose of true identification of key practical considerations for spectrum sharing in the TV white spaces. As such the paper constitutes a concise summary of various analyzes and provides pragmatic guidelines for deployment of radio-environment maps (REM) based systems. Based on the conducted measurements and achieved results, the set of practical conclusions for REMs has been deduced, and the prospective procedure of deployment of such a network has been proposed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) is an exciting new technology, which has introduced a paradigm shift in spectrum access. As a result it also changes the role of the regulator. On one hand the scarce radio spectrum should be used in an optimal way, so that society is best served. On the other hand interference between users and between networks should be avoided. For that reason rules have to be defined for spectrum use. This topic is called spectrum governance. For evaluation and to check whether devices obey the rules, a monitoring system is needed. In this paper, we propose to use a fleet of mobile monitoring vehicles for this purpose.\u
