Real-time manned simulation of advanced terminal area guidance concepts for short-haul operations

    Get PDF
A real-time simulation was conducted of three-dimensional area navigation and four-dimensional area navigation equipped (STOL) aircraft operating in a high-density terminal area traffic environment. The objectives were to examine the effects of 3D RNAV and 4D RNAV equipped aircraft on the terminal area traffic efficiency, and to examine the performance of an air traffic control system concept and associated controller display proposed for use with advanced RNAV systems. Three types of STOL aircraft were simulated each with different performance capabilities. System performance was measured in both the 4D mode and in a 3D mode; the 3D mode, used as a baseline, was simply the 4D mode less any time specification. The results show that communications workload in the 4D mode was reduced by about 35 percent compared to the 3D, while 35 percent more traffic was handled with the 4D. Aircraft holding time in the 4D mode was only 30 percent of that required in the 3D mode. In addition, the orderliness of traffic was improved significantly in the 4D mode

    Ethical Mastery of Innovative Technologies

In this paper we present an alternative bio-epistemological-based approach to economic ethics issues, which suggests that economists need not only an understanding of the ecosystem in terms of irreversibility, but even more an understanding of the way the process in ecosystem make actual the principle of ameliorative equilibration. This means that among many technological innovations that extend the field of the possibilities only those that prove to be integrative and able to ameliorate the adaptation process will be chosen and preserved. In our view, only this type of prospective approach could be considered ethical as it realizes the principle of ameliorative equilibration and harmonizes the technological innovation process with the process of the ecosystem.social cooperation, biophysical constraints, negentropic rocess, ameliorative equilibration, vection, cross-disciplinary research.

Authoritarianism: Validation of the Balanced F scale through Observer Ratings

    Get PDF
In conducting this study, our purpose was to further our understanding of the relationship between authoritarian attitudes and behavior. The specific purpose of the present study was to investigate the use of observer ratings in validating personality characteristics of authoritarians. Our study focused upon defining personality dimensions of the authoritarian personality. Observer and self-ratings of the subject on a newly constructed personality measure was used in an attempt to clarify traits of the authoritarian. The self-ratings provided the personal perception of the authoritarian while observer ratings provided insight into personality dimensions which the authoritarian represses or distorts. Also, the personality measure used provides more accurate self and observer ratings than have been achieved on past personality measures

The effectiveness of workplace coaching:A meta-analysis of learning and performance outcomes; scale development; theoretical model of individual differences and longitudinal study

The extant literature on workplace coaching is characterised by a lack of theoretical and empirical understanding regarding the effectiveness of coaching as a learning and development tool; the types of outcomes one can expect from coaching; the tools that can be used to measure coaching outcomes; the underlying processes that explain why and how coaching works and the factors that may impact on coaching effectiveness. This thesis sought to address these substantial gaps in the literature with three linked studies. Firstly, a meta-analysis of workplace coaching effectiveness (k = 17), synthesizing the existing research was presented. A framework of coaching outcomes was developed and utilised to code the studies. Analysis indicated that coaching had positive effects on all outcomes. Next, the framework of outcomes was utilised as the deductive start-point to the development of the scale measuring perceived coaching effectiveness. Utilising a multi-stage approach (n = 201), the analysis indicated that perceived coaching effectiveness may be organised into a six factor structure: career clarity; team performance; work well-being; performance; planning and organizing and personal effectiveness and adaptability. The final study was a longitudinal field experiment to test a theoretical model of individual differences and coaching effectiveness developed in this thesis. An organizational sample of 84 employees each participated in a coaching intervention, completed self-report surveys, and had their job performance rated by peers, direct reports and supervisors (a total of 352 employees provided data on participant performance). The results demonstrate that compared to a control group, the coaching intervention generated a number of positive outcomes. The analysis indicated that coachees’ enthusiasm, intellect and orderliness influenced the impact of coaching on outcomes. Mediation analysis suggested that mastery goal orientation, performance goal orientation and approach motivation in the form of behavioural activation system (BAS) drive, were significant mediators between personality and outcomes. Overall, the findings of this thesis make an original contribution to the understanding of the types of outcomes that can be expected from coaching, and the magnitude of impact coaching has on outcomes. The thesis also provides a tool for reliably measuring coaching effectiveness and a theoretical model to understand the influence of coachee individual differences on coaching outcomes

The origin of biological macromolecules on the earth. The hypothesis of inorganic template

    Get PDF
Studies about the origin of life are reviewed. The nonrandom organization of organelles is discussed from a structural and functional point of view. After postulating that the origin of biomacromolecules was not a random event, the paper develops the hypothesis that polypeptides and polynucleotides were formed on an inorganic template. Only information-containing structures can pass natural selection and develop through evolution

A Study of the Organizational Climate of Effingham High School as Perceived by the Faculty

    Get PDF
Statement of Purpose The purpose of this field study was to determine how the faculty at Effingham High School in Effingham, Illinois, perceived the organizational climate of the school. As first year assistant principal of the high school, the researcher saw the need to understand the personality of the organization with which he worked. The researcher viewed teacher perceptions of the school\u27s organizational climate as a meaningful beginning point for initiating an ongoing project to build a positive school climate at Effingham High School. Procedure The Organizational Climate Index constituted the instrument used to gather faculty perceptions of the organizational climate. The instrument was developed by George Stern and Associates of Syracuse University. The instrument was developed on the social theory of H.A. Murray. The data for the study is based on a sample of forty-five teachers in the Effingham High School using the Organizational Climate Index. The results of the survey were tabulated by Evaluation Research Associates of Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. The study is divided into five chapters. Chapter One explains why the researcher selected the specific question addressed by the study. Chapter Two describes the rationale for the study and a review of the research and literature regarding organizational climate. Chapter Three discusses the general design of the study. The Organizational Climate Index is described, along with information on the administration of the survey. Chapter Three also summarizes the general characteristics of the school. Chapter Four describes the results of the survey along with conclusions. The chapter shows nine tables pertaining to the factors scored by the results of the survey. Chapter Five summarizes the study and lists eleven specific recommendations by the researcher pertaining to the organizational climate as perceived by the faculty of Effingham High School
