Integrating Evolutionary Computation with Neural Networks
There is a tremendous interest in the development of the evolutionary computation techniques as they are well suited to deal with optimization of functions containing a large number of variables. This paper presents a brief review of evolutionary computing techniques. It also discusses briefly the hybridization of evolutionary computation and neural networks and presents a solution of a classical problem using neural computing and evolutionary computing technique
Performance evaluation of WMN-GA for different mutation and crossover rates considering number of covered users parameter
Node placement problems have been long investigated in the optimization field due to numerous applications in location science and classification. Facility location problems are showing their usefulness to communication networks, and more especially from Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) field. Recently, such problems are showing their usefulness to communication networks, where facilities could be servers or routers offering connectivity services to clients. In this paper, we deal with the effect of mutation and crossover operators in GA for node placement problem. We evaluate the performance of the proposed system using different selection operators and different distributions of router nodes considering number of covered users parameter. The simulation results show that for Linear and Exponential ranking methods, the system has a good performance for all rates of crossover and mutation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
A Hybrid Differential Evolution Approach to Designing Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Image Classification
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have demonstrated their superiority in
image classification, and evolutionary computation (EC) methods have recently
been surging to automatically design the architectures of CNNs to save the
tedious work of manually designing CNNs. In this paper, a new hybrid
differential evolution (DE) algorithm with a newly added crossover operator is
proposed to evolve the architectures of CNNs of any lengths, which is named
DECNN. There are three new ideas in the proposed DECNN method. Firstly, an
existing effective encoding scheme is refined to cater for variable-length CNN
architectures; Secondly, the new mutation and crossover operators are developed
for variable-length DE to optimise the hyperparameters of CNNs; Finally, the
new second crossover is introduced to evolve the depth of the CNN
architectures. The proposed algorithm is tested on six widely-used benchmark
datasets and the results are compared to 12 state-of-the-art methods, which
shows the proposed method is vigorously competitive to the state-of-the-art
algorithms. Furthermore, the proposed method is also compared with a method
using particle swarm optimisation with a similar encoding strategy named IPPSO,
and the proposed DECNN outperforms IPPSO in terms of the accuracy.Comment: Accepted by The Australasian Joint Conference on Artificial

GA/SA-based hybrid techniques for the scheduling of generator maintenance in power systems
YesProposes the application of a genetic algorithm (GA) and simulated annealing (SA) based hybrid approach for the scheduling of generator maintenance in power systems using an integer representation. The adapted approach uses the probabilistic acceptance criterion of simulated annealing within the genetic algorithm framework. A case study is formulated in this paper as an integer programming problem using a reliability-based objective function and typical problem constraints. The implementation and performance of the solution technique are discussed. The results in this paper demonstrate that the technique is more effective than approaches based solely on genetic algorithms or solely on simulated annealing. It therefore proves to be a valid approach for the solution of generator maintenance scheduling problem
Genetic algorithms
Genetic algorithms are mathematical, highly parallel, adaptive search procedures (i.e., problem solving methods) based loosely on the processes of natural genetics and Darwinian survival of the fittest. Basic genetic algorithms concepts are introduced, genetic algorithm applications are introduced, and results are presented from a project to develop a software tool that will enable the widespread use of genetic algorithm technology
A genetic-algorithms based evolutionary computational neural network for modelling spatial interaction data
Building a feedforward computational neural network model (CNN) involves two distinct tasks: determination of the network topology and weight estimation. The specification of a problem adequate network topology is a key issue and the primary focus of this contribution. Up to now, this issue has been either completely neglected in spatial application domains, or tackled by search heuristics (see Fischer and Gopal 1994). With the view of modelling interactions over geographic space, this paper considers this problem as a global optimization problem and proposes a novel approach that embeds backpropagation learning into the evolutionary paradigm of genetic algorithms. This is accomplished by interweaving a genetic search for finding an optimal CNN topology with gradient-based backpropagation learning for determining the network parameters. Thus, the model builder will be relieved of the burden of identifying appropriate CNN-topologies that will allow a problem to be solved with simple, but powerful learning mechanisms, such as backpropagation of gradient descent errors. The approach has been applied to the family of three inputs, single hidden layer, single output feedforward CNN models using interregional telecommunication traffic data for Austria, to illustrate its performance and to evaluate its robustness.
